Preconditioning effects of physiological cyclic stretch on pathologically mechanical stretch-induced alveolar epithelial cell apoptosis and barrier dysfunction.

BACKGROUND: We aim to investigate the effects of preconditioning of physiological cyclic stretch on the alveolar epithelial cell apoptosis induced by pathologically mechanical stretch and barrier dysfunction and how these effects are linked to differential expression of small GTPases Rac and Rho mRNA. METHODS: Pulmonary alveolar epithelial cells were subjected to different treatments of cyclic stretch (CS) at 5% and 20% elongation, respectively. Cells maintained in normal cell culture were used as negative control. On the other hand, cell apoptosis and Rac/Rho activities in cells with or with

Pathological and physiological high-frequency oscillations in focal human epilepsy.

High-frequency oscillations (HFO; gamma: 40-100 Hz, ripples: 100-200 Hz, and fast ripples: 250-500 Hz) have been widely studied in health and disease. These phenomena may serve as biomarkers for epileptic brain; however, a means of differentiating between pathological and normal physiological HFO is essential. We categorized task-induced physiological HFO during periods of HFO induced by a visual or motor task by measuring frequency, duration, and spectral amplitude of each event in single trial time-frequency spectra and compared them to pathological HFO similarly measured. Pathological HFO h

Aquaticity as a Latent Dimension of Aquatic Performance: Conceptual Framework and Application to Breath-Hold Diving.

Sports performance in aquatic environments is governed by biomechanical, physiological, neuromuscular and perceptual-mental constraints that differ fundamentally from those encountered on land. As a result, athletes with comparable general physiological or motor capacities may achieve markedly different performance outcomes in aquatic sports. Within functional kinesiology and sport science, aquatic performance is still frequently interpreted through isolated physiological, biomechanical, or technical variables, which limits both explanatory depth and applied relevance. This Perspective article

Back to the future! Revisiting the physiological cost of negative work as a team-based activity for exercise physiology students.

We implemented a team-based activity in our exercise physiology teaching laboratory that was inspired from Abbott et al.'s classic 1952 Journal of Physiology paper titled "The physiological cost of negative work." Abbott et al. connected two bicycles via one chain. One person cycled forward (muscle shortening contractions, positive work) while the other resisted the reverse moving pedals (muscle lengthening contractions, negative work), and the cost of work was compared. This study was the first to link human whole body energetics with isolated muscle force-velocity characteristics. The labora

Short term outcomes following clipping and coiling of ruptured intracranial aneurysms: does some of the benefit of coiling stem from less procedural impact on deranged physiology at presentation?

BACKGROUND: Endovascular coiling (EVC) has been shown to yield superior clinical outcomes to surgical clipping (SC) in the treatment of ruptured cerebral aneurysms. The reasons for these differences remain obscure. We aimed to assess outcomes of EVC and SC relative to baseline physiological derangement. METHODS: This was an exploratory analysis of prospectively collected trial data. Physiological derangement was assessed using the Acute Physiology and Chronic Health Evaluation II (APACHE II) scoring system. Other contributory variables such as age, World Federation of Neurosurgical Societies

Biomechanical properties of human ascending thoracic aortic aneurysms.

BACKGROUND: Surgical management of ascending thoracic aortic aneurysms (aTAAs) relies on maximum diameter, growth rate, and presence of connective tissue disorders. However, dissection and rupture do occur in patients who do not meet criteria for surgical repair. This study investigated the mechanical properties of aTAAs compared with normal human ascending aortas for eventual development of biomechanical aTAA risk models. METHODS: aTAA specimens (n = 18) were obtained from patients undergoing surgical aneurysm repair, and fresh, healthy ascending aortas (n = 19) as controls were obtained fro

Reading under the skin: physiological activation during reading in children with dyslexia and typical readers.

The aim of this study was to investigate physiological activation during reading and control tasks in children with dyslexia and typical readers. Skin conductance response (SCR) recorded during four tasks involving reading aloud, reading silently, and describing illustrated stories aloud and silently was compared for children with dyslexia (n = 16) and a control group of typical readers (n = 16). Children's school wellness was measured through self- and parent-proxy reports. Significantly lower SCR was found for dyslexic children in the reading-aloud task, compared to the control group, wherea

Hydrogel design at anatomical extremes: Lessons learned from ocular and intraperitoneal applications.

Hydrogels are widely used as an effective platform for therapeutic drug delivery, wound healing and corrective vision, among other applications. Their tunability and adaptability, including the choice of natural or synthetic polymers, allow the design of hard or soft hydrogels with variable loading capacity, viscosity, and adhesiveness, tailored for diverse physiological organs and tissues. Common targeted sites include the eye, skin, and joints, whereas the peritoneal cavity remains comparatively less explored. Designing hydrogels for the eye versus the peritoneal cavity share similar challen

Refined versus Extra Virgin Olive Oil High-Fat Diet Impact on Intestinal Microbiota of Mice and Its Relation to Different Physiological Variables.

Extra virgin olive oil (EVOO) has been reported to have a distinct influence on gut microbiota in comparison to other fats, with its physiological benefits widely studied. However, a large proportion of the population consumes olive oil after a depurative process that not only mellows its taste, but also deprives it of polyphenols and other minority components. In this study, we compare the influence on the intestinal microbiota of a diet high in this refined olive oil (ROO) with other fat-enriched diets. Swiss Webster mice were fed standard or a high-fat diet enriched with EVOO, ROO, or butte

Multivariate hematological and biochemical profiling reveals conserved physiological modules in Brahman- and Charolais-crossbred beef cattle under tropical smallholder systems.

BACKGROUND AND AIM: Hematological and biochemical profiling is widely used to evaluate the physiological and health status of cattle; however, most studies interpret blood parameters individually and may overlook coordinated physiological regulation. Multivariate analytical approaches can reveal biologically integrated relationships among blood traits and provide a broader understanding of systemic physiology. Therefore, this study aimed to identify coordinated physiological modules, describe multivariate relationships among hematological and biochemical traits, and quantify breed-related phys

Human Responses to Visually Evoked Threat.

Vision is the primary sense humans use to evaluate and respond to threats. Understanding the biological underpinnings of the human threat response has been hindered by lack of realistic in-lab threat paradigms. We established an immersive virtual reality (VR) platform to simultaneously measure behavior, physiological state, and neural activity from the human brain using chronically implanted electrodes. Subjects with high anxiety showed increased visual scanning in response to threats as compared to healthy controls. In both healthy and anxious subjects, the amount of scanning behavior correla

[Work-stress and cortisol; measurements and results].

Physiological measurements of stress are believed to help with the 'objectivation' of the rather subjective phenomenon called 'stress'. Because there are only moderate interpersonal correlations between the subjective experience of work-stress and physiological stress measurements, the latter are useful mainly for comparing groups with high stress and groups with low stress and not as a diagnostic tool at individual level. Physiological measurements have added value because they quantify the strain that stress exerts on the body, which ultimately determines what effect stress has on health. In

Detection of Physiological Signals Based on Graphene Using a Simple and Low-Cost Method.

Despite that graphene has been extensively used in flexible wearable sensors, it remains an unmet need to fabricate a graphene-based sensor by a simple and low-cost method. Here, graphene nanoplatelets (GNPs) are prepared by thermal expansion method, and a sensor is fabricated by sealing of a graphene sheet with polyurethane (PU) medical film. Compared with other graphene-based sensors, it greatly simplifies the fabrication process and enables the effective measurement of signals. The resistance of graphene sheet changes linearly with the deformation of the graphene sensor, which lays a solid

Developed diplopia and ptosis due to a nonfunctioning pituitary macroadenoma during pregnancy.

Physiologic pituitary enlargement is common during normal pregnancy. However, symptoms such as diplopia, blurred vision and headache resulting from physiologic pituitary enlargement are very rare during pregnancy. A 39-year-old woman complained of sudden diplopia and left eye ptosis at 33th weeks of gestation. An magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) demonstrated the pituitary enlargement compressing the optic chiasm. Notwithstanding the medication of bromocriptine, her symptoms did not regress during pregnancy. At 5 months after delivery, her symptoms dramatically resolved without any surgery, and

Investigation of an alternative generic model for predicting pharmacokinetic changes during physiological stress.

Physiologically based pharmacokinetic models were developed using MATLAB Simulink® and PK-Sim®. We compared the capability and usefulness of these two models by simulating pharmacokinetic changes of midazolam under exercise and heat stress to verify the usefulness of MATLAB Simulink® as a generic PBPK modeling software. Although both models show good agreement with experimental data obtained under resting condition, their predictions of pharmacokinetics changes are less accurate in the stressful conditions. However, MATLAB Simulink® may be more flexible to include physiologically based process

["Physiological" healing and development of coxa valga in congenital dislocation of the hip (author's transl)].

At the University Orthopaedic Clinic Bonn, congenital dislocation of the hip has been treated since 1969, using the Hanausek-Apparatus. In this study the results of "physiological healing" and the development of coxa valga are compared with the results of our previous combined treatment regimen (traction in extension, followed by manual reduction, and initially fixation in the Lorenz position in plaster of Paris and then in Lange position). The term "physiological healing" is explained. The diagnosis coxa valga was made using the criteria of the DGOT working party on hip dysplasias. The proble

Structural equation modeling reveals proline as the dominant pathway governing rice seed germination under chilling stress.

BACKGROUND: Low-temperature stress limits the germination of direct-seeded rice (Oryza sativa L.), yet the physiological mechanisms underlying antioxidant defense and reserve mobilization remain unclear. Prohexadione-calcium (PC) modulates gibberellin biosynthesis and oxidative metabolism, while selenium (Se) functions as an antioxidant cofactor; however, their combined effects on cold-stressed germination in rice have not been systematically investigated in terms of integrated physiological regulation involving antioxidant and metabolic pathways. METHODS: Two rice varieties with contrasting

How do physiological networks respond to normobaric hypoxia and isometric exercise?

The dynamics of physiological systems are impacted by both exercise and hypoxia. Network models can be used to map the interactions between various physiological components in environmental physiology and exercise using the concepts of information theory. This cross-over study compared three normobaric conditions: control, simulated altitude of 2500 m (fraction of inspired oxygen: F i O 2 ${F_{{\mathrm{i}}{{\mathrm{O}}_2}}}$ ≈ 15.1%) and 3500 m ( F i O 2 ${F_{{\mathrm{i}}{{\mathrm{O}}_2}}}$ ≈ 13.5%), and rest vs. isometric exercise through the lens of network physiology.
