No-shows at a community mental health clinic: a pilot study.

Potential patients who do not show up for their first appointments at a mental health clinic represent a puzzling and important phenomenon. When the setting, as in this study, is a multi-ethnic community, the psychosocial determinants for such behaviour are complex indeed. The author presents preliminary data relating clinic no-show rate to the variables of age, sex, presenting problem, and referral source. From the patterns which emerge from the data, certain possible explanations and tentative hypotheses are discussed in relation to previous reports in the literature. Some practical, clinica

Training and activities of pharmacist prescribers in a California pilot project.

The training of pharmacists allowed to prescribe under protocol in California health manpower pilot projects (HMPPs) and the specific program at San Francisco General Hospital (SFGH) are described. From 1972 to 1983, several bills were passed allowing pharmacists to prescribe and administer drugs or devices in HMPPs under specified conditions. The main objective of the HMPPs was to train pharmacists to assist physicians and other providers in providing good follow-up care for chronically ill patients. Programs for pharmacists consisted of a training phase followed by an employment phase in whi

Treatment of polymorphous light eruption with nicotinamide: a pilot study.

In a pilot study, 42 patients suffering from polymorphous light eruption (PLE) were treated with oral nicotinamide, 3 g daily, for 2 weeks. Twenty-five patients remained free from lesions despite extensive sun exposure. We suggest that an abnormality in tryptophan metabolism is important in the aetiology of PLE, and that nicotinamide administration partially corrects this.

Asperger's syndrome and non-verbal communication: a pilot study.

The study investigated the ability of 10 patients with Asperger's syndrome to recognize and produce non-verbal aspects of facial and spoken (e.g. vocal intonation) communication by use of photographs, audiotape and videotape. It also aimed to establish materials to differentiate individuals with this condition from a comparable non-Asperger group. Asperger subjects tended to be poorer than comparable patients on all subtests.

A pilot study on the use of botulinum toxin in spasmodic torticollis.

Dystonic torticollis has been treated with local injections of botulinum toxin in a single blind study of 12 patients. A significant decrease of abnormal movements was recorded, and pain improved. Further studies are desirable to define the optimum dosage and site for injections, and the long term effects of repeated injections.

Mitoxantrone and cyclophosphamide in advanced breast cancer: a pilot study.

A trial of combination chemotherapy using mitoxantrone-cyclophosphamide was started in 1983. Sixteen patients with widely metastatic cancer of the breast, including one man, received mitoxantrone, 10 mg/m2 intravenously (IV) over 30 minutes on day 1, followed by cyclophosphamide, 200 mg/m2 by mouth (PO) daily in divided doses on days 3 to 6. It is too early to evaluate four patients at present. The remaining 12 received three or more courses of treatment, and three of these patients achieved a complete response. Another four patients went into partial remission, amounting to an overall respons

Pulp response in sound and carious teeth: a pilot study.

This article describes a pilot investigation in which the response of the pulps in both sound and carious rat molar teeth to traumatic exposure and treatment with three different compounds was assessed. Two of the compounds appeared to give a more favorable response in carious teeth. These results are discussed, and future experiments described.

Spina bifida: epidemiological data from a pilot study.

The epidemiology of spina bifida has great geographical variation. A small unselected group of patients were registered as part of a pilot project on infantile hydrocephalus. Twenty-two patients, born 1963-69 in Vejle county, Denmark were identified, giving an incidence of 0.77 per 1000 births. The mothers had 26 pregnancies prior to the spina bifida children; 14 of these had resulted in normal viable infants (54%). Seven of the patients had other congenital malformations, unrelated to the neural tube defect. All unoperated patients died. Four of 10 operated children were alive at age 7-12 yea

Diagnosis of palatal defects by trispiral tomography: a pilot study.

A pilot study is presented in which 12 selected patients, ages 3-11 years, were evaluated for a palatal defect utilizing trispiral tomography. Each patient, because of speech and hearing abnormalities, was evaluated by a speech pathologist and an otolaryngolgist and voice recordings, audiometry, tympanometry and plain and cine radiographic X-rays were obtained. Those children with speech and hearing abnormalities in whom the question of a palatal defect was raised underwent trispiral palatal tomography. Nine of the 12 patients selected for tomography demonstrated a palatal defect that was not

MDA-assisted psychotherapy with neurotic outpatients: a pilot study.

Ten neurotic patients (five males and five females) were treated over a period of 2 to 6 months (mean, 4.1) as outpatients. The study allowed for a maximum of 75 hours of psychotherapy (mean, 51.55 hours). During the course of treatment, two to four (mean, 3.5) administrations of MDA (3,4-methylenedioxyamphetamine) were employed as adjunctive aids in an effort to enhance the psychotherapeutic process. The mean duration of the drug sessions was 8 hours (range, 6 to 14 hours). The first administration of MDA took place when, in the therapist's judgment, sufficient rapport had been established wi

Group Therapy Simulation in PMHNP Education: A Pilot Event.

OBJECTIVE: Growing mental health issues and workforce shortages highlight the need to train competent psychiatric-mental health nurse practitioners. Limitations in clinical placements and curriculum demands hinder psychotherapy training and exposure. Educators created a simulation to boost graduate students' exposure to group therapy. METHODS: While simulations improve psychiatric education, costs and staffing needs pose sustainability challenges. To address this, this pilot used volunteer undergraduate nursing students portraying simulated patients in place of paid standardized patients. RE

Physiological and Subjective Assessment of Fighter Pilot Mental Workload.

INTRODUCTION: Next-generation air force operations increasingly depend on advanced flight systems, which raises questions about their impact on aircrew workload. Physiological measures enable continuous, objective, and unobtrusive assessments, overcoming some limitations of self-report measures. We investigated whether electroencephalogram, electrocardiogram, and electrodermal activity predicted subjective Rating Scale of Mental Effort (RSME) ratings of fighter pilots during an operationally relevant mission in an F-16 simulator. METHODS: The mission included three flight segments expected to…
