Chelating agents as possible artificial blood substitutes.

The synthetic cobalt-containing oxygen carriers are briefly reviewed as well as some of the heavier metal systems. The earlier chemistry of the iron complexes with dioxygen is discussed. Some of the more recent results on the reversible binding of oxygen to iron complexes is presented. Initial results showed that low temperatures and steric hindrance in the vicinity of the binding site were important parameters. It is shown further that a rather extensive steric hindrance can yield iron complexes that are efficiently reversible at 25 C. Two such species are known at this date. It is possible t

In vitro effect of dextran-benzene-tetra-carboxylate hemoglobin on human blood rheological properties.

While conducting pharmacological investigations into oxygen carriers, it is important to study the in vitro and in vivo rheological behavior of blood cells in the presence of such preparations. With regard to the original nature of human hemoglobin bound to benzene tetracarboxylate substituted dextran (Dex-BTC-Hb), it seemed necessary to study its rheological effect in a simulated in vitro hemorrhagic shock compensated by a blood substitute. The viscosity of substitutes was determined as well as several rheological parameters after 0, 3 and 6 hours incubation periods of red blood cells with su

Fluid resuscitation.

Contention over fluid resuscitation is not new. The issues however have changed considerably. The crystalloid/colloid debate has largely reached a stalemate with little to define clear differences between the two especially early in traumatic shock when increased capillary permeability is a minor issue. Blood, despite its difficulties and its cost is now safer than ever before and we will have to wait a number of years before routine use of blood substitutes becomes possible. Hypertonic saline and hypertonic saline dextran solutions used as an early bolus of 4-6 ml/kg and in conjunction with i

Lasers, Microneedling, and Platelet-Rich Plasma for Skin Rejuvenation and Repair.

Skin resurfacing for the purpose of rejuvenation and repair continues to evolve with the development of noninvasive or minimally invasive surgical substitutes. Advances in laser therapy, microneedling, and platelet-rich plasma have reinvigorated research in wound repair and regenerative science. An overall positive clinical response toward the use of platelet-rich plasma as an adjuvant to fractional photothermolysis and percutaneous collagen induction is observed. Its effect on post-treatment adverse symptoms, erythema, edema, crusting, and clinical outcomes in rejuvenation are summarized in t

Clinical Grade Human Pluripotent Stem Cell-Derived Engineered Skin Substitutes Promote Keratinocytes Wound Closure In Vitro.

Chronic wounds, such as leg ulcers associated with sickle cell disease, occur as a consequence of a prolonged inflammatory phase during the healing process. They are extremely hard to heal and persist as a significant health care problem due to the absence of effective treatment and the uprising number of patients. Indeed, there is a critical need to develop novel cell- and tissue-based therapies to treat these chronic wounds. Development in skin engineering leads to a small catalogue of available substitutes manufactured in Good Manufacturing Practices compliant (GMPc) conditions. Those subst

Premature red blood cells have decreased aggregation and enhanced aggregability.

Preterm infants are highly susceptible to ischemic damage. This damage is most obvious in the brain, retina, and gastrointestinal tract. Studies focusing on the rheological properties of premature red blood cells (pRBCs) have consistently shown minimal or no RBC aggregation. Previously, measurements of pRBC aggregation kinetics indicated that specific plasma properties are responsible for the decreased RBC aggregation observed in the neonates, but that their specific RBC properties do not affect it. However, the strength of interaction in the pRBC aggregates as a function of medium composition
