The investigation of the relationships of demodex density with inflammatory response and oxidative stress in rosacea.

The relationships of demodex density with systemic oxidative stress, inflammatory response, and clinical severity in rosacea are not clear. This study aimed to (a) analyze the levels of systemic oxidative stress, antioxidant capacity, inflammatory parameters, and matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) in systemic circulation in patients with rosacea, (b) identify the relationship between mite density and both oxidative stress and inflammation, and (c) investigate the role of photoaging and sebum secretion in etiopathogenesis. Forty patients with rosacea and 40 age-, sex-, and skin phenotype-matched …

High-dimensional bidirectional population coding in pontine mossy fiber inputs to the cerebellar cortex.

The cerebellum gathers sensorimotor information from the neocortex via the pontine nucleus, mixing and expanding it to form associations for … red to encode specific locomotion and whisking-related variables. Curiously, axons with opposing response characteristics were intermingled within the granule cell layer. Experimentally constrained models of the circuit show that innervation of granule cells with different combinations of opposite-signed inputs enables effective propagation of high-dim …

Micro-Doppler for venous sinus localization in approaches to the cerebello-pontine angle.

BACKGROUND: Main anatomical landmarks of retrosigmoid craniotomy are transverse sinus (TS), sigmoid sinus (SS), and the confluence of both. Anatomical references and guidance based on preoperative imaging studies are less reliable in the posterior fossa than in the supratentorial region. Simple intraoperative real-time guidance methods are in demand to increase safety. METHODS: This manuscript describes the localization of TS, SS, and TS-SS junction by audio blood flow detection with a micro-Doppler system. CONCLUSION: This is an additional technique to increase safety during craniotomy and

Microsurgical anatomy and surgical exposure of the cerebellar peduncles.

A better understanding of the surgical anatomy of the cerebellar peduncles in different surgical approaches and their relationship with othe … the most critical aspect for the prevention of surgical morbidity during surgery in and around the pons and the upper medulla. Our findings help in evaluating radiological data and planning an operative procedure for cerebellar peduncles.

J.L. Prévost, Eye Deviation, and Early Steps in Space Lateralization: "Looking At or Away".

Conjugate deviation of the eyes toward side of lesion was recognized over a century ago as a manifestation accompanying hemiplegia, usually of apoplectic origin. While working on the services of Alfred Vulpian and Jean-Martin Charcot, Jean-Louis Prévost sparked international interest in the neurologic sign later named after him. His 1868 thesis represents the first systematic case series of patients with this ocular sign, observed in conjunction with head rotation toward the nonparalyzed side, which he called conjugate deviation (CD) of the eyes. Within a decade, it was uniformly reported in b

Acute Pontine Ischemic Stroke in a Healthy Child With Intracranial Vasculopathy.

Here we report the case of a previously healthy 8-year-old boy who presented with altered mental status, right facial droop and right-sided hemiplegia the day after playing in an inflatable bouncer. No head trauma was reported by the patient nor witnessed by the parents. Urgent magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) demonstrated acute ischemic infarction in the left pons; computed tomographic angiography excluded arterial dissection but identified a small hyperdense filling defect in the basilar artery, later confirmed to be a calcification at the origin of a perforating artery. Pediatric National I…

A posttraumatic pontomedullary rent with good outcome.

Posttraumatic pontomedullary rents have been described mainly as postmortem histopathological findings in patients who died immediately or within the first hours after trauma. To the best of our knowledge, no long-term survivors of this condition have been described, and those surviving initially were always severely impaired. We present the first patient with this condition and with corresponding lesions on imaging who survived longer than 3 months. Moreover, the patient regained almost complete independence 1 year after the trauma. We briefly discuss the proposed mechanisms of this injury. W

[Physiological role of ITR in reflex and sleep apneas].

This study demonstrates that unilateral excitotoxic lesionin of the pontine ITR increases the frequency of spontaneous central sleep apneas in freely behaving rats without alteration in average respiratory rate, minute ventilation, or sleep architecture. Thus, our findings suggest that the ITR may function specifically to dampen respiratory perturbations and that bilateral integrity of this structure is important. We may also speculate that the ITR functions to maintain stable breathing during sleep in man.

The basilar pontine nuclei and the nucleus reticularis tegmenti pontis subserve distinct cerebrocerebellar pathways.

Previous studies often considered the basilar pontine nuclei (BPN) and the nucleus reticularis tegmenti pontis (NRTP) as relays of a single cerebro-(ponto)-cerebellar pathway. Conversely, the different cortical afferences to the BPN and the NRTP, as well as the anatomical and functional features of the cerebellopetal projections from these pontine nuclei, support the different, and for some aspect, complementary arrangement of the cerebrocerebellar pathways relayed by the BPN or NRTP. Both the BPN and the NRTP are innervated from the cerebral cortex, but with regional prevalence. The NRTP is p

Central pontine myelinolysis in association with Hodgkin's lymphoma.

Central pontine myelinolysis was found histologically in a young man who died with Hodgkin's lymphoma. Clinically he had developed a progressive peripheral sensory deficit, ataxia, quadriparesis, dysarthria, incontinence and drowsiness. This is the fifth case reported in the British literature. The pathogenesis and aetiology of this primary demyelinating disease are considered.

The cerebellar projection from locus coeruleus as studied with retrograde transport of horseradish peroxidase in the cat.

The cerebellar afferent projection from locus coeruleus has been studied in the cat by means of retrograde axonal transport of horseradish peroxidase. Labelled cells are present bilaterally in locus coeruleus only following injections in the cerebellar vermis (especially its anterior and posterior parts), the ventral paraflocculus and the flocculus. The labelled cells are restricted to the caudal half of the nucleus. A few labelled cells are also present in locus coeruleus following injections in the fastigial nucleus, and in nucleus interpositus anterior. The findings are discussed in relatio

[Pathophysiology of Respiratory Failure in Neuromuscular Diseases].

Based on a recent review by Krohn et al, the respiratory center and its regulatory mechanisms are described. Although the respiratory control centers in the medulla and pons ensure rhythmic respiration, maintaining and regulating respiration involves a complex network of peripheral chemoreceptors, vagal nerves, and central chemoreceptors. This review discusses the pathophysiology of respiratory disorders in neuromuscular diseases and evaluation and treatment methods based on the anatomy of the respiratory network.

A Case of Non-Germinomatous Germ Cell Tumors of the Frontal Lobe Arising From the Lateral Ventricle With a Synchronous Pineal Lesion.

Non-germinomatous germ cell tumours (NGGCT) are rare intracranial tumours that account for 1% to 3% of cases. They are usually seen in the pineal and suprasellar regions. NGGCT of the frontal lobe arising from the lateral ventricle with a synchronous pineal lesion is uncommon. We present a case of NGGCT with multifocal lesions in the pineal gland, frontal lobe, and pons treated with chemotherapy followed by craniospinal irradiation (CSI).

[Prenatal diagnosis of isolated posterior fossa anomalies: attempt at a simplified approach].

The authors suggest, after some embryological, anatomical and nosological reviews, a simplified approach mainly based on the appearance of the pons, cerebellar hemispheres and vermis, independently from an associated cystic dilatation of the posterior fossa. Pontocerebellar hypoplasias and partial or total vermian agenesis are detailed because they can be diagnosed with a prenatal MRI. This classification based on our experience and on the literature data should be of value to evaluate the neurological prognosis.

Excessive sweating: an uncommon sign of basilar artery occlusion.

Excessive sweating of the face and, to a lesser degree, of the thorax and limbs, occurred after basilar artery occlusion in a 15 year old Saudi boy. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) showed a limited bilateral paramedian infarction of the rostral ventral pons. Basilar artery occlusion in children and adolescents is a rarity. Excessive sweating following such a stroke is rare in any age group. Clinico-anatomical correlations are discussed.
