Work posture, ergonomic risk, and musculoskeletal disorders in traditional farming communities of Rajasthan.

Manual farming operations among small-scale independent farmers engaged in subsistence agriculture expose workers to significant ergonomic hazards, leading to a high prevalence of musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs). This study assessed MSD prevalence and associated risk factors among 298 manual farming workers (177 males, 121 females) in the State of Rajasthan, India. Data were collected via a self-administered questionnaire, and work postures were analyzed using rapid upper limb assessment (RULA) and rapid entire body assessment (REBA) assessment methods. Binary logistic regression identified s…

Clinically significant posture-related oxygen saturation variability in Fontan circulation: prevalence and determinants.

BACKGROUND: Patients with Fontan circulation often have low baseline oxygen saturation (SpO2), and posture-related SpO2 variability is sometimes observed in clinical practice. However, the prevalence and determinants of clinically significant posture-related SpO2 variability have not been systematically investigated. METHODS: This observational study included 103 patients with Fontan circulation and 166 patients after biventricular repair. After 1:1 propensity score matching by age and sex, 103 patients in each group were analyzed. SpO2 was measured in the sitting and supine positions, and th…

Bone histological evidence for posture-related load transmission in the talpid pectoral girdle.

The pectoral girdle of terrestrial tetrapods functions as a critical interface for transmitting loads between the trunk and forelimbs. While mammals with a parasagittal forelimb posture mainly rely on the scapula as the principal element for load bearing, talpids (Talpidae) exhibit a markedly specialised pectoral girdle related to a hyper-abducted forelimb posture. In talpids, the humero-clavicular articulation plays an important functional role, suggesting that load-transmission mechanisms within the pectoral girdle may differ from those of typical terrestrial mammals. However, because the pe…

Impact of posture change on patient-specific absorbed dose estimation in nuclear medicine.

PURPOSE: Internal dosimetry in nuclear medicine commonly assumes a fixed upright standing posture of subjects. The use of four recent therapeutic radionuclides with longer half-lives causes long exposure to patients during different daily activities and postures. This study aims to evaluate the effect of posture change on organ absorbed doses for seven radionuclides: diagnostic photon/positron-emitters (64Cu, 68Ga, 99mTc) and therapeutic alpha/beta-emitters (177Lu, 211At, 212Pb, 225Ac). METHOD: Whole body Japanese adult male and female digital human phantoms (National Institute of Information…

Control of Posture During Lifting: Effects of Weight Knowledge and Load Position Asymmetry.

Lifting objects challenges postural stability and requires the generation of anticipatory (APA) and compensatory postural adjustments. This study investigated the combined effects of perturbation predictability and asymmetric load placement on postural control during a bimanual lifting task. Sixteen healthy adults completed a randomized crossover study involving repeated lifts of a box containing a load equal to 5% of their body weight that was positioned asymmetrically under three conditions: known, unpredictable, and predictable. Surface electromyography from trunk and lower limb muscles and

Impact of upright posture on cognitive function in orthostatic hypotension: A systematic review.

Orthostatic hypotension is characterized by the reduced ability to compensate for a decrease in blood pressure upon standing and is prevalent among elderly populations as well as many pathophysiological conditions. Orthostatic hypotension is also associated with the development of mild cognitive impairment, cognitive decline, and dementia. While associations have been observed between the presence of orthostatic hypotension and impaired cognitive performance, few studies have assessed cognitive function in both supine and upright postures in individuals with orthostatic hypotension. We conduct…

A mobile tool for static standing posture assessment using accurate 3D body reconstruction.

Accurate posture assessment is essential for diagnosing and managing health issues related to postural disorders. Existing mobile applications rely on 2D imaging and analyzing reflective markers placed on anatomical landmarks of the human body without comprehensive view of body's posture. A mobile tool of 3D body reconstruction-based posture assessment is proposed in this paper. A smartphone is used to capture video circling around a static standing person in an approximate A-pose. Some specific multi-view body images using body orientation estimation are extracted from video. Then OpenPose an…

Muscular Strategies for Correcting the Pelvic Position to Improve Posture-An Exploratory Study.

The correction of postural weaknesses through the better positioning of the pelvis is an important approach in sports therapy and physiother … n pelvic tilt. Different individual muscle patterns are used by different persons to correct pelvic posture, with the gluteus maximus muscle apparently playing the most important role. This can be important for therapy, as different muscle strategies should be trained depending on the individually preferred motor patterns.

Cross-speed and Cross-posture Gait Phase Partitioning Based on Multi-modal Data.

Gait abnormality represents a widespread motor symptom that can stem from various diseases, including stroke, Parkinson's disease, and spinal cord injury. During the rehabilitation process of gait abnormality, recognizing the gait phase of patients is crucial. However, patients usually cannot realize walking at a stable speed or in a normal body posture. Therefore, the partitioning of gait into distinct phases under different circumstances is imperative. In this study, generalized models for cross-speed and cross-posture gait phase partitioning was developed using multimodal gait data collecte…

Differences in natural standing posture are associated with antisocial and manipulative personality traits.

In humans and animals, body posture is used in social and affective contexts to communicate social information, signal intentions, and prepare the individual for adaptive action. However, though stable individual differences in affect and social cognition are well studied, body posture continues to be typically studied in the context of state variation, and it remains unknown if trait-level differences in body posture exist and carry information about the individual. In our article, we show in a large sample (total N = 608 across five studies) that individual differences in body posture measur…
