A comprehensive clinico-instrumental evaluation was performed of 339 individuals residing in areas with high levels of radionuclide contamination, aimed to identify incidence rate for the development of various gastrointestinal tract pathologies. BACKGROUND: More than 80% of cases of mesothelioma worldwide have a history of asbestos exposure. In Mongolia, workers in coal burning thermal power plants (TPP) have widely utilized asbestos as an insulation material.
METHODS: We describe the case of a 47-year-old woman diagnosed with a malignant pleural mesothelioma. She worked in a TPP in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia for 28 years.
RESULTS: A computer tomography (CT) scan showed a circumferential ring around her left lung, and tissues' samples had a biphasic variant of mesothelioma with epithelioid and sarcomatoid components.

Frequency of chromosome aberration was evaluated in 537 persons taken part in amelioration after the accident. The highest rate of aberration was found in covering builders and dosimetric: 3.24 +/- 0.25 and 3.11 +/- 0.43 per 100 cells, respectively. The mean rate of aberrations among the Chernobyl NPP staff was 2.37 +/- 0.20 per 100 cells, in the other examined groups the mean yield of aberration varied from 1.31 to 1.47 per 100 cells. Reactivity of organism was studied in a total of 48 patients with chronic duodenitis, actually in the zone of increased radiation. Hypo- and normotensive type reactions were found to prevail, each having its peculiar clinical picture. While studying the lipid peroxidation- and antioxidant defence systems, changes were identified in those parameters characterizing the above systems, their degree being higher in blood leukocytes.
