Prisoner releases in postcolonial Uganda: Power, politics, and the public.

This article examines prisoner releases in postcolonial Uganda, focusing on the period between independence in 1962 and the inauguration of Yoweri Museveni in 1986. During these decades, Uganda's government enacted over 30 large scale releases of prisoners and detainees, affecting approximately 20,000 individuals. These acts of clemency were highly politicized and frequently occurred during times of political transition or tension. While framed by Uganda's leaders and the official media as gestures of goodwill and symbols of progress, these releases ultimately reinforced executive power and th

Work precarization in the prison system's primary health care.

This paper analyzes how work precariousness is expressed in the daily life of a Prison Primary Care Team in the Brazilian South. This qualitative, exploratory research applied the focus group technique and relied on the participation of ten health professionals. The results evidenced a substandard occupational relationship, objectified by the workforce's outsourcing, the poor proper management of work processes, and little provision for specific professional qualifications and actions consistent with the occupational reality.

Comparative Outcomes for Trauma Patients in Prison and the General Population.

BACKGROUND: Prisoners are a vulnerable population, and there are few contemporary studies that consider trauma patient outcomes within the prisoner population. Therefore, we sought to provide a descriptive analysis of prisoners involved in trauma and evaluate whether a healthcare disparity exists. We hypothesized that prisoners and non-prisoners have a similar risk of mortality and in-hospital complications after trauma. METHODS: The Trauma Quality Improvement Program (2015-2016) was queried for trauma patients based upon location inside or outside of prison at the time of injury. A multivari

Prison inmates with court-ordered treatments: are they really different?

BACKGROUND: Both the frequency of court-ordered treatments (COT) for offenders and prevalence of mental disorders among regular prison inmates steadily increased in most western countries. Whether there are major sociodemographic and clinical differences between these two populations is still matter of debate. METHODS: We compared the sociodemographic and clinical characteristics in a representative sample of 139 regular prison inmates versus 61 offenders with COT admitted during a 5-year period in an acute psychiatric care unit located in the central prison of the Geneva county. Fisher exact

Unnatural Resources: The Colonial Logic of the Holmesburg Prison Experiments.

This article focuses on medical trials performed by Dr. Albert Kligman on the inmates of Philadelphia's Holmesburg Prison between 1951 and 1974, which have been widely criticized as exploitative. I seek to investigate the mechanics behind the "ethical blind spot" that enabled the American medical community to laud Kligman for his efforts while simultaneously condemning the medical atrocities of the Holocaust and supporting the development of the Nuremberg Code. I argue that this nonrecognition hinges on a colonial logic by which certain populations are produced as waste, both rhetorically and

Hunger strike in prison: medical, ethical and legal aspects.

[DOES A PRISONER HAVE THE RIGHT TO AUTONOMY? A CASE REPORT].

The case presented discusses a prisoner, Y, in his mid-sixties with longstanding medical conditions, who was sentenced to prolonged incarceration. Y refused conventional medicine because he believed that his medical condition was exacerbated by this treatment and only complementary alternative medicine (CAM) would be helpful. He therefore demanded to be treated only by CAM. He was ready to pay for the treatment out of his own pocket. In the prison where Y was previously incarcerated over the course of 12 years, he had access to CAM remedies which were purchased by his family. After being trans

Organizational dynamics of interprofessional practice in the Norwegian prison system.

Reoffending rates may be reduced through efforts to rehabilitate prisoners. A more nuanced understanding is needed of how front-line prison and health care services collaborate during the rehabilitation process. We report an investigation of the organizational dynamics of interprofessional practice among prison, mental health, and welfare services in two Norwegian prison case studies. First, a high security (closed) prison where a coordination network was implemented among prison management, front-line staff, and external service personnel to enhance the prisoners' life management skills. The Impact of Privatization on Minority Faith Prison Chaplains in Canada.

Canadian federal prison chaplaincy underwent a major shift in 2013 when the provision of its services was privatized and outsourced to a single for-profit company. It is based on ten in-depth, semi-structured interviews with minority faith prison chaplains. The results show that minority faith federal prison chaplains are concerned about increased levels of bureaucratization that have compromised the quality of spiritual car

Depressive Symptoms among Pregnant and Postpartum Women in Prison.

INTRODUCTION: Women in prison experience high rates of mental and physical health problems, and pregnant and postpartum women in prison may be particularly vulnerable. Very few studies have examined depressive symptoms among women who are pregnant and give birth in prison. We assessed depressive symptoms longitudinally from pregnancy into the postpartum period in a sample of 58 women who gave birth in prison. We also considered whether incarceration-related factors (length of time incarcerated while pregnant, remaining length of sentence to serve after birth) were associated with depressive sy
