Probiotics supplementation increases intestinal blood flow velocity in extremely low birth weight preterm infants.

OBJECTIVE: To determine whether probiotics supplementation affects intestinal blood flow velocity in extremely low birth weight neonates. STUDY DESIGN: In this randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled study, probiotics were added to the first enteral feeding and continued until discharge or 34 weeks postmenstrual age. Pulsed Doppler was used to measure preprandial and postprandial (at 30 and 60 min) time-averaged mean velocity (TAMV), peak systolic velocity (PSV) and end diastolic velocity (EDV) during the second week of life after ≥ 7 days of probiotics supplementation. RESULT: A total …

Probiotics as an alternative strategy for prevention and treatment of human diseases: a review.

Probiotics are live microbial food supplements or their components, which have been shown to have beneficial effects on human health. Probiotics can be bacteria, molds, or yeasts, but most of them fall into the group known as lactic acid bacteria and are normally consumed in the form of yogurt, fermented milk, or other fermented foods. Data from clinical trials have shown contrasting effects and should be interpreted with caution. A large variety of potential beneficial effects have been reported including improvement of intestinal tract health, enhancing the immune system, reducing symptoms o…

Update on the role of probiotics in the therapy of pediatric inflammatory bowel disease.

Probiotics have had many applications in the past few years, and inflammatory conditions of the GI tract--including chronic disorders such as inflammatory bowel disease (IBD)--have received the most attention by investigators. In fact, the experimental basis to expect clinical efficacy of probiotics in IBD is quite robust. In spite of this however, only minimal evidence of benefit by any probiotic is currently available in Crohn's disease, either in adult or in pediatric populations. In ulcerative colitis, on the other hand, several probiotic formulations and especially the proprietary prepara…

Effect of probiotics on intestinal mucosal immunity and ultrastructure of cecal tonsils of chickens.

Sixty chickens were randomly divided into two groups to determine the effect of oral administration of probiotics on the intestinal mucosal immune response and ultrastructure of cecal tonsils. The first group (control) was fed with a basic diet without antibiotic or probiotics. The second group was fed with the same diet as the control, except they received drinking water with probiotics (4 x 10(9) cfu per chicken and day) from posthatch to day 3 of age. The probiotic preparation was composed of Bacillus subtilis Bs964, Candida utilis BKM-Y74 and Lactobacillus acidophilus LH1F. Intestinal flui…

Probiotic and Dietary Supplements Intervention in Age-Related Neurodegenerative Disorders.

Age-related neurodegenerative disorders, including Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease, and mild cognitive impairment, represent a growing global health challenge. The present medicines offer only symptomatic alleviation with poor disease-modifying efficacy. Increasing data suggests that the gut-brain axis and dietary health are measurable contributions to cognitive impairment as we age. This review first focused on the mechanistic link between gut dysbiosis and neurodegeneration. Furthermore, the review discusses preclinical and clinical research that show how probiotics and dietary supp…

Divalent Metal Ion Dictates Probiotic Intestinal Retention and Mucoadhesion.

Probiotic colonization in the gastrointestinal tract is a prerequisite for their therapeutic efficacy. However, under pathological conditions such as inflammatory bowel disease, the intestinal microenvironment imposes colonization resistance through multiple converging factors, severely limiting probiotic retention. Dietary metal ions and polyphenols have each been reported to influence probiotic behavior, yet whether their coordinated action through metal-phenolic network coatings produces differential effects on colonization enhancement depending on the metal ion species remains unclear. In

Effect of probiotic interventions on oral health in children: a systematic review.

INTRODUCTION: Early childhood caries (ECC) is one of the most prevalent chronic diseases affecting young children worldwide. Probiotic supplementation has emerged as a potential adjunctive strategy for modifying the oral microbiome and reducing caries risk; however, evidence regarding its effectiveness remains inconsistent. This review evaluated the effects of probiotic interventions on oral health outcomes in children under 6 years of age, with emphasis on probiotic-based interventions and their influence on caries incidence, microbial changes, and biological mechanisms. METHODS: A systemati

Seasonal frost improves probiotic and nutrient availability in fermented vegetables.

Climate-driven shifts in seasonal frost patterns raise important questions about their impact on food quality and resilience. Here, we show that a single 12-h frost event at harvest can enhance both the microbial and nutritional properties of fermented cabbage and carrots, two cold-tolerant crops widely grown in the U.S. Northeast. Using microbial amplicon and metagenomic sequencing, we found that frost exposure led to subtle but consistent changes in microbial composition, including greater abundance of cold-adapted taxa such as Leuconostoc and Debaryomyces. These changes corresponded to incr

Polysaccharide-based live hydrogels for probiotic intestinal and wound therapy.

Probiotics as therapeutic microorganisms have been widely used for gastrointestinal disorders and wound therapy. However, poor viability in wound and gastrointestinal environments limits their efficacy. Polysaccharide-based hydrogels are suitable delivery systems for probiotics to overcome these challenges. These hydrogels by benefiting from their biocompatibility, biodegradability, and non-toxicity can create suitable microenvironments for probiotics. Unlike passive traditional carriers (such as capsules or inert nanoparticles), these "live hydrogels" are dynamic carriers encapsulating viable…

A comprehensive meta-analysis on probiotic metabolites and inflammatory biomarkers in obesity.

Introduction: Obesity is a complex disorder characterised by inflammatory and metabolic response system disorders. There is increasing evidence that the gut microbiota influences host physiology by producing bioactive metabolites. The metabolic byproducts of probiotic fermentation, such as branched-chain amino acids and short-chain fatty acids, affect immune regulation. However, we do not know how these metabolites systemically act in host inflammatory signalling. Methods: A meta-analysis was performed to characterise interactions between microbial metabolites and host inflammatory markers rel

Probiotic nanovesicles encapsulating baicalin: a strategy to overcome colorectal cancer.

Escherichia coli Nissle 1917 (EcN) is a unique probiotic utilized to treat inflammatory bowel disease and irritable bowel syndrome. Outer membrane vesicles (OMVs) from EcN can not only deliver pro-biotic anti-inflammatory molecules to cancer cells to exert anti-rectal cancer effects, but also deliver therapeutic drugs, genes, and other "cargoes" encapsulated in the vesicles to specific cells, making them an ideal vehicle for drug delivery. In this study, we successfully isolated OMVs of probiotic origin and obtained BCN-OMVs by encapsulating baicalin (BCN) in EcN-OMVs. Fluorescence microscopy
