BACKGROUND: Patients with small bowel injuries (SBI) in abdominal trauma have no clear clinical or radiological signs on initial examination. This leads to delay in appropriate surgical interventions with consequent high morbidity and mortality. In this paper we demonstrate the role of video-assisted laparoscopy (VAL) in management of such patients.

A prospective randomized study was done comparing endoscopic band ligation and sclerotherapy for the treatment of oesophageal varices. Hundred fifty cirrhotic patients with history of bleeding from varices were included in the study. Seventy-five patients got sclerotherapy and 75 got band ligation of varices. Both sclerotherapy and band ligation were continued till obliteration of varices. Fiberoptic bronchoscopy (FOB) has been reported to have a high diagnostic yield and to be safe in BMT patients with pulmonary infiltrates. At our institution, BMT patients with respiratory symptoms and/or pulmonary infiltrates had a thoracic CT and bronchoalveolar lavage (BAL). Transbronchial biopsy (TBBx) was considered if the platelet count could be raised to >30 x 10(9)/l. Seven cases of recurrent posterior instability of the shoulder were reviewed, three with recurrent subluxation and four with recurrent posterior dislocations. All were treated surgically, one by inverted Putti-Platt, one by glenoplasty and five by posterior bone block procedures. The follow-up goes from three to 17.5 years (mean 8.5 years). A total of 55 cataract extractions were performed on 53 patients aged 90 years or more in the period 1972 to 1982. Assessment of the outcome was based on data from hospital records and on questionnaires to the patient's ophthalmologist and general practitioner. Cataract surgery had improved visual acuity in 42 patients. Only 25 patients (47%) could, however, utilize the improved visual acuity, and obtain some practical benefit from the cataract extraction.
