BACKGROUND: Use of proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) may have adverse effects in patients with alcohol-related cirrhosis (ALD cirrhosis), but PPIs continue to be used by many patients.
AIMS: We aimed to describe the prevalence and incidence of PPI use from filled prescriptions among patients with ALD cirrhosis and to identify predictors of PPI initiation after ALD cirrhosis diagnosis.
METHODS: We used Danish nationwide healthcare registries to investigate PPI use among patients diagnosed with ALD cirrhosis from 1997 to 2022. We used multivariable Cox regression to identify predictors of PPI init

Hesperidin exhibits promising potential as a feed additive for augmenting gastric acid secretion in animals. Gastrointestinal function is essential for animal growth and the efficient digestion of dietary nutrients, with gastric acid secretion serving as one of its critical components. The secretion of gastric acid, together with other digestive fluids and substances, significantly influences the digestion and absorption of animal feed, which in turn affects growth performance. However, there is limited research regarding the application of hesperidin as a feed additive to enhance gastric acid

This systematic review investigates the probable effect of proton pump inhibitor (PPI) use on the severity of periodontal disease and peri-implantitis and implant survival. We conducted a literature search in PubMed, Scopus, and Cochrane Central Library up to April 2024. Two review authors independently screened the title and abstracts and then the full texts of retrieved studies. Observational and clinical trial studies that assessed the association between PPI use and periodontal disease severity and peri-implantitis or implant survival were included. Data extraction from the included studie

Oral bacterial infections are a great health concern worldwide especially in diabetic patients. Emergence of antimicrobial resistance with reference to biofilms in oral cavity is of great concern. We investigated antibiotics combination with proton pump inhibitors against oral clinical isolates. The strains were identified as Staphylococcus epidermidis and Staphylococcus aureus by the 16S rRNA gene sequencing. In molecular docking, ciprofloxacin, levofloxacin, and omeprazole best fit to active pockets of transcriptional regulators 4BXI and 3QP1. None of the proton pump inhibitors were active a

Hypomagnesemia is defined as serum magnesium levels less than 0.7mmol/L and can result in a plethora of symptoms ranging from mild gastrointestinal symptoms to serious conditions such as cardiac arrhythmias and neurological complications. When considering the etiological factors, drug-induced hypomagnesemia is highlighted because commonly used medications such as proton pump inhibitors (PPIs), aminoglycoside antibiotics, and loop and thiazide diuretics can cause low magnesium levels. A 49-year-old male presented to the emergency department with severe vomiting worsening over three days complic

Proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) are frequently used medications to treat a wide variety of gastrointestinal conditions. By irreversibly inhibiting the hydrogen-potassium ATPase pump, they remarkably reduce gastric acid secretion. However, chronic PPI intake can result in serious complications, including severe hypomagnesemia. The following case report presents a severe case of refractory PPI-induced hypomagnesemia (PPIH), resistant to continuous oral and intravenous magnesium replacement, in a 70-year-old male patient, with a long history of PPI use due to persistent epigastric pain. Upon each o

INTRODUCTION: The response to proton pump inhibitor treatment in functional dyspepsia varies among patients. A decision tool that identifies the probability of response based on clinical data could optimize management in these patients.
OBJECTIVE: To develop and internally validate an easy-to-use predictive model that enables clinicians to establish the probability of response to proton pump inhibitors in patients with functional dyspepsia.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: We conducted a cross-sectional study on adults with functional dyspepsia. A pilot study identified variables related to response to

OBJECTIVES: Proton Pump Inhibitors (PPIs) are widely used in SSc for gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD). However, there is little evidence to support their empirical use and long-term safety has been questioned. Our objective was to better describe clinicians' attitudes toward PPIs prescription and use in SSc patients.
METHODS: Clinicians involved in the care of SSc patients were invited through international physician networks and social media to participate in an online survey.
RESULTS: Responses from 227 clinicians from 36 countries were evaluable. The majority 'agreed' (41.4 %) or 's

BACKGROUND: We tested whether proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) are associated with enteric infections among those with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), after adequately accounting for baseline differences between PPI users and nonusers.
METHODS: This was a self-controlled case series, with each patient serving as their own control. Ambulatory patients with IBD were included if they were tested for enteric infection by multiplex polymerase chain reaction testing panel (GIPCR) and/or Clostridoides difficile toxin PCR from 2015 to 2019 and received PPIs for some but not all of this period. INTRODUCTION: In the United States, obesity affects approximately ⅖ adults and ⅕ children, leading to increased risk for comorbidities, like gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), treated increasingly with proton pump inhibitors (PPIs). Currently, there are no clinical guidelines to inform PPI dose selection for obesity, with sparse data regarding whether dose augmentation is necessary.
AREAS COVERED: We provide a review of available literature regarding the pharmacokinetics (PK), pharmacodynamics (PD), and/or metabolism of PPIs in children and adults with obesity, as a step toward informing

Helicobacter pylori infection is still the main risk factor for the development of gastric cancer (GC). We explore the scientific evidence for the role of the gastric microbiome beyond Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) in gastric carcinogenesis. The composition of the gastric microbiome in healthy individuals, in presence and absence of H. pylori infection, in proton pump inhibitor (PPI)-users, obese individuals, and GC patients was investigated. Possible mechanisms for microbial involvement, limitations of available research and options for future studies are provided. A common finding amongst

During asexual growth and replication cycles inside red blood cells, the malaria parasite Plasmodium falciparum primarily relies on glycolysis for energy supply, as its single mitochondrion performs little or no oxidative phosphorylation. Post merozoite invasion of a host red blood cell, the ring stage lasts approximately 20 hours and was traditionally thought to be metabolically quiescent. However, recent studies have shown that the ring stage is active in several energy-costly processes, including gene transcription, protein translation, protein export, and movement inside the host cell. It

INTRODUCTION: Gut microbiota can significantly affect the effectiveness of immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs) in cancer patients. Recently, antibiotics were shown to decrease survival rate of patients treated by ICIs. Proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) can indeed modulate microbiota's diversity, therefore altering ICIs response. A meta-analysis was performed based on published data to verify this hypothesis.
METHODS: In this study, over 41 publications, exploring the impact of concomitant PPI treatment on outcomes of ICI-treated patients, were analyzed. Evaluated endpoints were overall survival (

Objective The use of a proton pump inhibitor (PPI) reduces rebleeding and mortality in patients with upper gastrointestinal bleeding (UGIB). Vonoprazan is a novel oral agent with strong and sustained acid-inhibitory activity. We clarified the effect of vonoprazan compared with oral PPIs in such patients. Methods We analyzed the Diagnosis Procedure Combination database. The primary outcome was rebleeding, and secondary outcomes were in-hospital mortality and in-hospital mortality after rebleeding. Propensity score matching was performed to balance the comparison groups, and logistic regression

Magnesium is an important co-factor that helps regulates the movement of ions through voltage-mediated channels within myocardial tissues by the membrane sodium-potassium pump, and its deficiency can reduce the pump's activity, leading to partial depolarization and changes in the activity of many potential-dependent membrane channels leading to arrhythmias. In this case report, we are looking to establish the direct relationship between hypomagnesemia caused by proton pump inhibitors (PPIs), which could lead to cardiac arrhythmias. Here, we present a 45-year-old Hispanic female, with a known p
