Exploring the edges of visual space: the influence of visual boundaries on peripheral localization.

Previous studies of localization of stationary targets in the peripheral visual field have found either underestimations (foveal biases) or overestimations (peripheral biases) of target eccentricity. In the present study, we help resolve this inconsistency by demonstrating the influence of visual boundaries on the type of localization bias. Using a Goldmann perimeter (an illuminated half-dome), we presented targets at different eccentricities across the visual field and asked participants to judge the target locations. In Experiments 1 and 2, participants reported target locations relative to

Is visual resolution after adaptive optics correction susceptible to perceptual learning?

The visual benefit of correcting high-order aberrations may not be fully realized due to neural mechanisms that compensate for the aberrations of the eye. We examined the extent to which these neural mechanisms might be susceptible to perceptual learning in an adaptive optics (AO)-corrected test of visual resolution. Visual resolution was measured in an adaptive optics scanning laser ophthalmoscope (AOSLO) in 3 conditions: (1) low-order correction (defocus and astigmatism) without AO, (2) 3-mm pupil with AO correction, and (3) 5.81-mm pupil with AO correction. Measurements were made on both ey

Passive tactile feedback facilitates mental rotation of handheld objects.

Mental rotation of objects improves when passive tactile information for the rotating object accompanies the imagined rotation (Wraga, Creem, & Proffitt, 2000). We examined this phenomenon further using a within-subjects paradigm involving handheld objects. In Experiment 1, participants imagined rotating an unseen object placed on their upturned palms. The participants were faster at mental rotation when the object was rotated on their palm than when the object remained stationary. Experiment 2 tested whether the performance advantage would endure when the participants received tactile informa

Isolating the impact of visual perception on dyslexics' reading ability.

A large body of data suggests that phonological deficits play an important causal role in dyslexics' reading difficulties. The functional role of visual impairments is still highly debated. Many recent studies have shown clear visual deficits in large subgroups of dyslexics. However, the relationship between these deficits and visual routines required for reading is not clear. To assess the direct contribution of visual factors to dyslexics' slower and less accurate reading, we composed a task that was similar to single word reading in its basic visual characteristics, but had none of the othe

Spatial deployment of attention influences both saccadic and pursuit tracking.

We examined the effects of changing spatial aspects of attention during oculomotor tracking. Human subjects were instructed to make a discrimination on either the small (0.8 degrees ) central or the large (8 degrees ) peripheral part of a compound stimulus (two counter-rotating concentric rings) while the stimulus either translated across the screen or was stationary. During this period, a transient perturbation with either step or ramp movement profile occurred. For perturbations leading to a change in position larger than the small ring, saccades occurred more frequently and had much shorter

Vertical object motion during horizontal ocular pursuit: compensation for eye movements increases with presentation duration.

Smooth pursuit eye movements change the retinal image motion of objects in the visual field. To enable an observer to perceive the motion of these objects veridically, the visual system has to compensate for the effects of the eye movements. The occurrence of the Filehne-illusion (illusory motion of a stationary object during smooth pursuit) shows that this compensation is not always perfect. The amplitude of the illusion appears to decrease with increasing presentation durations of the stationary object. In this study we investigated whether presentation duration has the same effect when an o

Perspective based on stereopsis and occlusion.

Perspective is usually considered a monocular pictorial cue, distinct from other cues such as occlusion and stereopsis. We cut across these distinctions by asking whether purely binocular (cyclopean) contours, created by stereoscopically shifting a region of homogeneous texture nearer or further than its surround, can act as a linear-perspective cue and whether the contours' ability to do this is influenced by their surface belongingness. We found that the left/right orientation of cyclopean trapezoids nearer than a surround strongly influenced perceived slant, showing that perspective constra

Further studies of phonation threshold pressure in a physical model of the vocal fold mucosa.

This paper reports results of further experimentation on a previously developed physical model of the vocal-fold mucosa [Titze et al., J. Acoust. Soc. Am. 97, 3080-3084 (1995)]. The effects of vocal-fold thickness, epithelial membrane thickness, and prephonatory glottal geometry on phonation threshold pressure were studied. Phonation threshold pressures in the range of 0.13 to 0.34 kPa were observed for an 11-mm-thick vocal fold with a 70-micron-thick "epithelial" membrane for different "mucosal" fluid viscosities. Higher threshold pressure was always obtained for thinner vocal folds and thick

Human heading judgments in the presence of moving objects.

When moving toward a stationary scene, people judge their heading quite well from visual information alone. Much experimental and modeling work has been presented to analyze how people judge their heading for stationary scenes. However, in everyday life, we often move through scenes that contain moving objects. Most models have difficulty computing heading when moving objects are in the scene, and few studies have examined how well humans perform in the presence of moving objects. In this study, we tested how well people judge their heading in the presence of moving objects. We found that peop

Olfactory perception and olfactory imagery: a multidimensional analysis.

Whether a system of imagery for olfaction exists is currently an unsettled issue. Moreover, the dimensions underlying odor perception have eluded researchers for many years. Two experiments bearing on these issues are presented. In one experiment, a group of 32 undergraduates rated the similarity of pairs of 16 commonplace odorants (e.g., chocolate and leather) they perceived using scratch and sniff stimuli; in another, a different group of 44 undergraduates was asked to imagine and then rate the similarity of the same pairs of odors. Multidimensional scaling of the data suggests that three-di

Determinants of the perception of sagittal motion.

This study examines the change in the perceived distance of an object in three-dimensional space when the object and/or the observer's head is moved along the line of sight (sagittal motion) as a function of the perceived absolute (egocentric) distance of the object and the perceived motion of the head. To analyze the processes involved, two situations, labeled A and B, were used in four experiments. In Situation A, the observer was stationary and the perceived motion of the object was measured as the object was moved toward and away from the observer. In Situation B, the same visual informati

Perceived direction of glass patterns can flip by 90°: A neural model.

We show a 90° shift in the perceived direction of a well-known motion illusion, based on the dot-pair separation in dynamic Glass patterns. The change can be explained with a cortical model incorporating extra-classical receptive fields. We employed dynamic Glass patterns: a sequence of patterns of randomly positioned, but consistently oriented dot-pairs, presented in rapid succession. Although dynamic Glass patterns contain no coherent motion, observers perceive strong motion in either direction parallel to the dot-pair orientation for small dot-pair separations (< 30 arc min). This has been

Heart rate, health, and hurtful behavior.

Hostility is a risk factor for cardiovascular events. When challenged, individuals high on hostility exhibit a hyperreactive psychophysiological response to stressors, thereby increasing risk for developing cardiovascular disease. However, low resting heart rate (HR) is associated with physical aggression and hostility in children, adolescents, and adults. Based on a community sample of 296 men (mean age = 32.0), we (a) address whether aggression/hostility relates to physical health through relationships with cardiovascular levels at rest and in response to stressors, and (b) determine how rel

Mapping the "forbidden zone" near and away from the fixation point.

Burt and Julesz modified the classical view of Panum's fusional area by incorporating the concept of the disparity gradient. They found that an area of double vision, described as the forbidden zone for single vision, is present when the angular separation between two objects is small. However, Krol and van de Grind argued that Burt and Julesz's finding could be explained by the classical theories (specifically Ogle, 1932 JOSA 22 664-728) in which the probability for fusion is a function of peripheral angle and disparity magnitude. We examined whether a forbidden zone can be specified within O

Influence of balance on oral-motor control of speech: a pilot investigation.

In this exploratory study, the interaction between motor coordination for balance and oral-motor control for speech was investigated in 31 typical college-aged women, ages 20 to 29 years (M = 22.3, SD = 2.1), recruited through the local university. Since speech is dependent on the control and coordination of the subsystems of the speech production mechanism, it was hypothesized that a difficult balance task would interfere with speech motor control. Oral-motor control was measured by diadochokinesis while participants were in a nonchallenging balance position (floor standing) and a challenging

Making perceptual learning practical to improve visual functions.

Task-specific improvement in performance after training is well established. The finding that learning is stimulus-specific and does not transfer well between different stimuli, between stimulus locations in the visual field, or between the two eyes has been used to support the notion that neurons or assemblies of neurons are modified at the earliest stage of cortical processing. However, a debate regarding the proposed mechanism underlying perceptual learning is an ongoing issue. Nevertheless, generalization of a trained task to other functions is an important key, for both understanding the

Motion parallax contribution to perception of self-motion and depth.

The object of this study is to mathematically specify important characteristics of visual flow during translation of the eye for the perception of depth and self-motion. We address various strategies by which the central nervous system may estimate self-motion and depth from motion parallax, using equations for the visual velocity field generated by translation of the eye through space. Our results focus on information provided by the movement and deformation of three-dimensional objects and on local flow behavior around a fixated point. All of these issues are addressed mathematically in term

Suppression of optokinesis during smooth pursuit eye movements revisited: the role of extra-retinal information.

When our eyes track objects that are moving in a richly structured environment, the retinal image of the stationary visual scene inevitably moves over the retina in a direction opposite to the eye movement. Such self-motion-induced global retinal slip usually provides an ideal stimulus for the optokinetic reflex. This reflex operates to compensate for global image flow. However, during smooth pursuit eye movements it must be shut down so that the reflex does not counteract the voluntary pursuit of moving targets. Here, we asked if retinal information is sufficient for this cancellation of the

Gaze stability of observers watching Op Art pictures.

It has been the matter of some debate why we can experience vivid dynamic illusions when looking at static pictures composed from simple black and white patterns. The impression of illusory motion is particularly strong when viewing some of the works of 'Op Artists, such as Bridget Riley's painting Fall. Explanations of the illusory motion have ranged from retinal to cortical mechanisms, and an important role has been attributed to eye movements. To assess the possible contribution of eye movements to the illusory-motion percept we studied the strength of the illusion under different viewing c
