Effects of instrument-assisted soft tissue mobilization on muscle performance during vertical jump in young men.

INTRODUCTION: Instrument assisted soft-tissue mobilization (IASTM) has become a popular myofascial intervention for sports medicine and rehabilitation professionals. The aim of the present study was to analyze the acute effects of IASTM on muscle performance measured by vertical jump height, peak power, and peak force. METHODS: Twenty-four young men were assigned to the IASTM or control sessions. The IASTM session was applied bilaterally to the quadriceps (rectus femoris, vastus lateralis, and vastus medialis), hamstrings (biceps femoris, semitendinosus, and semimembranosus), and triceps sura

Comparison between neurodynamic therapy and foam rolling in cool-down sessions for delayed onset muscle soreness in healthy individuals.

BACKGROUND: Delayed onset of muscle soreness (DOMS) is a common finding in trained and untrained individuals post high intensity exercises which can lead to injuries. Foam rolling (FR) and neurodynamic therapy (NDT) are types of active cool-down which provides effective for treatment of DOMS. But their role in reduction of intensity of the same in cool down is not established. STUDY DESIGN: Crossover study. METHODOLOGY: Total 60 healthy individuals participated in the study. Pre intervention readings were taken of strength and tightness by Range of motion. Subjects performed both the types o

The influence of loading intensity on muscle-tendon unit behavior during maximal knee extensor stretch shortening cycle exercise.

Tendon stiffness increases as the magnitude and rate of loading increases, according to its viscoelastic properties. Thus, under some loading conditions tendons should become exceptionally stiff and act almost as rigid force transducers. Nonetheless, observations of tendon behavior during multi-joint sprinting and jumping tasks have shown that tendon strain increases whilst muscle strain decreases as the loading intensity increases. The purpose of the current study was to examine the influence of external loading intensity on muscle-tendon unit (MTU) behavior during a high-speed single-joint,

Bilateral deficit and EMG activity during explosive lower limb contractions against different overloads.

We investigated whether bilateral deficit (BLD): (1) is observed during explosive lower limb contractions; (2) can be attributed to a reduction of neural drive and/or (3) to a different muscle coordination, and/or (4) to changes of the muscle force-velocity (F-v) relationship. Ten volunteers performed maximal explosive efforts of approximately 450 ms on a sledge ergometer, with both lower limbs (BL), with the right and left limb separately (ML), against different overloads. Peak-force (F, N), peak-power (w, W), sledge peak-velocity (v, m/s) and electromyography (EMG) of vastus lateralis (VL),

Increasing Agrin Function Antagonizes Muscle Atrophy and Motor Impairment in Spinal Muscular Atrophy.

Spinal muscular atrophy (SMA) is a pediatric genetic disease, characterized by motor neuron (MN) death, leading to progressive muscle weakness, respiratory failure, and, in the most severe cases, to death. Abnormalities at the neuromuscular junction (NMJ) have been reported in SMA, including neurofilament (NF) accumulation at presynaptic terminals, immature and smaller than normal endplates, reduced transmitter release, and, finally, muscle denervation. Here we have studied the role of agrin in SMAΔ7 mice, the experimental model of SMAII. We observed a 50% reduction in agrin expression levels

Similar body composition, muscle size, and strength adaptations to resistance training in lacto-ovo-vegetarians and non-vegetarians.

There is a popular belief that meat consumption is necessary to optimize adaptations to strength training (ST), but evidence to support this hypothesis is scarce. Therefore, this study aimed to compare ST adaptations in lacto-ovo-vegetarians (LOV) and non-vegetarians (NV) with adjusted protein intake per meal. Sixty-four LOV and NV performed 12 weeks of ST and were instructed to ingest at least 20 g of protein in each main meal during the experimental period. Quadriceps femoris muscle thickness (QFMT), knee extension one-repetition maximum (1RM), and isometric peak torque (PT), as well as part

Longitudinal development of muscle strength and relationship with motor unit activity and muscle morphological characteristics in youth athletes.

Neural and morphological adaptations determine gains of muscle strength. For youth athletes, the importance of morphological adaptation is typically highlighted based on the change in maturity status. However, the long-term development of neural components in youth athletes remains unclear. The present study investigated the longitudinal development of muscle strength, muscle thickness (MT), and motor unit firing activity of the knee extensor and their relationships in youth athletes. Seventy male youth soccer players (mean ± SD age = 16.3 ± 0.6 years) performed neuromuscular, maximal voluntar

Is 20 Hz Whole-Body Vibration Training Better for Older Individuals than 40 Hz?

In recent years, whole-body vibration (WBV) training has been used as a training method in health promotion. This study attempted to use WBV at three different frequencies (20, 30, and 40 Hz) with subjects from different age groups to analyze the activation of the rectus femoris muscle. The subjects included 47 females and 51 males with an average age of 45.1 ± 15.2 years. Results indicated significant differences in subjects from different age groups at 20 Hz WBV. Muscle contraction was greater in the subjects who were older (F(4,93) = 82.448, p < 0.001). However, at 30 Hz WBV, the difference

Patient-specific gait pattern in individuals with patellofemoral instability reduces knee joint loads.

Patellofemoral instability is influenced by morphological factors and associated with compensational alterations in gait pattern. Recent sim … t and reduced knee flexion and abduction moments compared to the control group, which required less quadriceps muscle forces. Lower quadriceps muscle forces resulted in a reduction of tibiofemoral and patellofemoral joint contact forces despite similar walking velocities between both groups. Furthermore, we observed decreased lateralizing patella forces in subjects …
