Fluorescence resonance energy transfer (FRET) is an important mechanism to design ratiometric fluorescent probes that are able to detect analytes quantitatively according to the ratio of two well-resolved emission signals. Two-photon (TP) fluorescent probes can realize the detection in living cells and tissues with deeper penetration depth, higher resolution, and lower photodamage in contrast to one-photon fluorescent probes. However, to date, fabricating TP-FRET ratiometric fluorescent probes possessing large two-photon absorption (TPA), high fluorescence quantum yield and perfect FRET effici

Low-dimensional materials can exhibit unusual structural, electronic, and magnetic properties that arise from nanoscale confinement and quantum effects. However, determining their local atomic structures remains challenging, especially when long-range periodicity is limited and conventional crystallographic approaches are difficult to apply. Here, we show a symmetry-guided screening strategy for resolving confined one-dimensional materials by combining scanning transmission electron microscopy with reactive force-field molecular dynamics and density functional theory. We encapsulate rare-earth

Biomolecules that constitute life on Earth are chiral, but the precise mechanism by which homochirality emerged remains a mystery. In this work, it is demonstrated that reactions of radical pairs, where one of the radical electron spins is polarized, can be enantioselective. This phenomenon arises from transient coherent quantum dynamics of the radical pair electron spins, which is known to occur even in warm and noisy condensed phase environments, where energetic perturbations much smaller than thermal energy can have strong effects on reactivity. A quantitative theory is presented based on t

In this paper, quantum chemical calculations for various cyano derivatives of thiophene and terthiophenes at the density functional theory (DFT) and ab initio Møller-Plesset (MP2) levels of theory are presented. In the case of the studied terthiophenes, CN groups located in the central part of the molecule lead to a preference of cis-cis geometry over trans-trans conformation. For alpha-substituted dicyano terthiophene, the investigation of torsional dependences shows that the highest energy barrier occurs at the perpendicular orientation of the aromatic rings. On the other hand, the dicyano s

Brown carbon (BrC) aerosols are key contributors to atmospheric light absorption and photochemistry, yet their optical properties and photochemical behavior are poorly understood. To explore the influence of a microdroplet environment on the photochemical decay of a representative BrC species, single particle cavity ring-down spectroscopy was used to probe individual aerosol particles containing imidazole-2-carboxaldehyde (IC) confined inside a linear electrodynamic quadrupole balance. The aerosol particles were levitated and exposed to 405 nm wavelength laser light to drive photobleaching. Th

Nodal-line semimetals are a class of topological materials hosting one dimensional lines of band degeneracy. Kramers nodal-line (KNL) metals/semimetals have recently been theoretically recognized as a class of topological states inherent to all non-centrosymmetric achiral crystal lattices. The electronic structure of candidate KNL semimetal YAuGe is investigated by angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) and quantum oscillations as well as by density functional theory (DFT) calculations. DFT has revealed that YAuGe hosts KNLs on the Γ-A-L-M plane of the Brillouin zone, that are prote

Quantum Hall states are characterized by a topological invariant, the many-body Chern number, which determines their quantized Hall conductivity. This invariant also emerges in circular dichroic responses, namely, by applying a circular drive and comparing excitation rates for opposite orientations. This work explores the dichroic response of confined, isolated quantum Hall systems, where bulk and edge contributions cancel exactly: When the edge response is properly isolated, the circular dichroic signal becomes quantized, serving as a direct and elegant probe of the many-body Chern number enc

Gallium nitride (GaN) is an important commercial semiconductor for solid-state lighting applications. Atomically thin GaN, a recently synthesized two-dimensional material, is of particular interest because the extreme quantum confinement enables additional control of its light-emitting properties. We performed first-principles calculations based on density functional and many-body perturbation theory to investigate the electronic, optical, and excitonic properties of monolayer and bilayer two-dimensional (2D) GaN as a function of strain. Our results demonstrate that light emission from monolay

Human conscious thought often appears as a diffuse, unstable, and only partly verbalizable field until attention, questioning, decision, or speech stabilizes it into a reportable form. This manuscript develops a quantum-inspired neural framework for that transition. The proposal does not claim that consciousness literally depends on microscopic quantum computation, that the brain implements a physical quantum computer, or that neuronal tissue maintains macroscopic quantum coherence. Instead, it uses the mathematical architecture of quantum theory-state vectors, density matrices, projection ope…

The experimental realizations of artificial spin-orbit coupling (SOC) and non-Hermitian potentials in ultracold atoms provide a versatile platform for exploring their interplay in quantum many-body systems. Here, we investigate a two-component Fermi gas in a three-dimensional cubic lattice with Rashba SOC and a complex-valued interaction arising from two-body loss. Based on a non-Hermitian mean-field theory, this work elucidates the interplay of dissipation and SOC in the pairing behavior of Fermi gases. Dissipation not only drives a phase transition from a superfluid to a normal state and ind

We intend to investigate the drug-binding energy of each nucleotide inside the aminoglycoside hygromycin B (hygB) binding site of 30S ribosomal RNA (rRNA) subunit by using the molecular fractionation with conjugate caps (MFCC) strategy based on the density functional theory (DFT), considering the functional LDA/PWC, OBS, and the dielectric constant parametrization. Aminoglycosides are bactericidal antibiotics that have high affinity to the prokaryotic rRNA, inhibiting the synthesis of proteins by acting on the main stages of the translation mechanism, whereas binding to rRNA 16S, a component o

Kagome superconductors AV3Sb5 (A = K, Rb, Cs) exhibit intertwined symmetry-breaking orders, including charge density wave (CDW), superconductivity, and time-reversal symmetry breaking (TRSB), yet their relationship, nature, and experimental detections remain under intense debate. At the heart of these controversies lies a critical yet often overlooked factor: the surface effect, which may engineer distinct technique-dependent observations. By combining density functional theory calculations and ARPES measurements, we unveil the important role of surface effect on the CDW instability and electr

Spin-selective carrier transport in low-dimensional magnetic semiconductors is central to the development of next-generation spintronics. However, achieving robust spin-filtering together with long spin-coherence under nonequilibrium conditions remains a major challenge. Recently isolated by top-down exfoliation, the CrSbSe3 nanowire has emerged as a ferromagnetic semiconductor exhibiting enhanced coercivity compared to its bulk counterpart. Here, using first-principles density functional theory combined with quantum transport calculations, we demonstrate that the CrSbSe3 nanowire is a ferroma

Magnetoelectric coupling enables the manipulation of magnetization by electric fields and polarization by magnetic fields. While typically found in heavy element materials with large spin-orbit coupling, recent experiments on rhombohedral-stacked pentalayer graphene have demonstrated a longitudinal magnetoelectric coupling (LMC) without spin-orbit coupling. Here, we develop a microscopic theory of LMC in layered quantum materials and identify how it is controlled by a "layer-space" quantum geometry. Focusing on rhombohedral multilayer graphene systems, we find that the interplay between LMC an

The behavior of spin quantum in k-space is key to identifying altermagnets (AMs) as the third kind of fundamental collinear magnetism. By contrast, noncollinear magnets-though abundant in nature-lack well-defined spin quantum numbers, and the resulting spin textures are often highly complex, which limits their potential for next-generation spintronic applications. Here we propose hyperspin, which lives in a higher-dimensional space, to address these drawbacks. Through analyzing the commutation relations between spin and Hamiltonian for a class of noncollinear magnets, we reveal that it is a hy

Integrating nanoscale optoelectronic functions is vital for applications such as optical emitters, detectors, and quantum information. Lanthanide atoms show great potential in this endeavor due to their intrinsic transitions. Here, we investigate Er adatoms on Si(100)-2×1 at 9 K using a scanning tunneling microscope (STM) coupled to a tunable laser. Er adatoms display two main adsorption configurations that are optically excited between 800 and 1200 nm while the STM reads the resulting photocurrents. Our spectroscopic method reveals that various photocurrent signals stem from the bare silicon

We investigate electric dipole spin resonance (EDSR) induced by an oscillating electric field within a system of double quantum dots formed electrostatically in monolayer phosphorene. Apart from the observed anisotropy of effective masses, phosphorene has been predicted to exhibit anisotropic spin-orbit coupling. Here, we examine a system consisting of two electrons confined in double quantum dots. A single-band effective Hamiltonian together with the configuration interaction theory is implemented to simulate the time evolution of the ground state. We examine spin flips resulting from singlet

A theory of coherent resonance energy transfer [Jang et al., J. Chem. Phys. 129, 101104 (2008)] is extended for coherent initial condition. For the situation where the initial excitation is an arbitrary linear combination of donor and acceptor excitations, a second order time local quantum master equation combined with polaron transformation is derived. Inhomogeneous terms in the resulting equation have contributions not only from initial donor and acceptor populations but also from their coherence terms. Numerical tests are performed for general super Ohmic spectral density where the bath deg

The development of ternary nanoscale materials with controlled cross-sectional doping is an important step for the use of chemically prepared quantum dots for nanoscale engineering applications. We report cross-sectional, elemental doping with the formation of an alloyed CdSSe nanocrystal from the thermal decomposition of Li(4)[Cd(10)Se(4)(SPh)(16)]. The sulfur incorporation arises from surface-mediated phenylthiolate degradation on the growing quantum dot surface. In the alloy, we identify a pure CdSe nucleus of approximately 1.5 nm, consistent with the predictions of nucleation theory. As th
