BACKGROUND: Combined radiation and wound skin injury (RW) are frequently observed in patients undergoing tumor surgery plus radiotherapy, and but specific treatment is lacking. Chitosan (CS) and carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) are commonly used to prepare hydrogel with good biocompatibility and low toxicity. Cannabidiol (CBD) has presented anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and neuroprotective properties.
METHODS: CMC, CS, and CBD were used and designed for three types of hydrogels (CMC/CS2/CBD, CMC/CS3/CBD, CMC/CS4/CBD) with different ratios of CMC and CS based on previous report and our prelimin

Radiation-induced lung injury (RILI) includes early acute phase radiation pneumonitis (RP), and late chronic phase radiation-induced pulmonary fibrosis (RIPF). There is increasing evidence that ionizing radiation-induced cellular senescence is associated with pulmonary fibrosis. We have recently reported that biomarkers of senescence and, specifically, tyrosine kinase Fgr are induced in mouse RIPF, human idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF), and in human RIPF. We also reported that treatment with an Fgr inhibitor significantly reduced fibrosis of irradiated mouse lungs. Here, we investigated th

PURPOSE: To compare the incidence of radiation-induced temporal lobe injury (TLI) between helical tomotherapy (HT) and conventional intensity-modulated radiotherapy (IMRT) in patients with nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC). METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed the medical records of NPC patients who underwent curative-intent HT or IMRT from March 2015 to December 2020 at our institution. Propensity score matching (1:1) was performed to minimize the impact of potential confounders. TLI was diagnosed based on the magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) findings. The actuarial rates of TLI were analysed by

BACKGROUND: Bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells (BMSCs) have demonstrated potential in the treatment of radiation-induced brain injury (RIBI); however, the presence of the blood-brain barrier (BBB) limits their therapeutic efficacy. Additionally, the precise mechanisms behind the use of BMSCs in treating RIBI are still not well understood. This study aimed to investigate the therapeutic efficacy of mannitol and BMSCs on neuronal autophagy and their efficacy in treating RIBI.
METHODS: In the study, RIBI models were first established in male Sprague-Dawley (SD) rats. Evans blue staining was perf

BACKGROUND: Radiotherapy can cause kidney injury in patients with cervical cancer. This study aims to investigate the possible molecular mechanisms by which CpG-ODNs (Cytosine phosphate guanine-oligodeoxynucleotides) regulate the PARP1 (poly (ADP-ribose) polymerase 1)/XRCC1 (X-ray repair cross-complementing 1) signaling axis and its impact on radiation kidney injury (RKI) in cervical cancer radiotherapy.
METHODS: The GSE90627 dataset related to cervical cancer RKI was obtained from the Gene Expression Omnibus (GEO) database. Bioinformatics databases and R software packages were used to analyz

A robust and sensitive high performance liquid chromatography-electrospray tandem mass spectrometry (HPLC-ESI MS/MS) method was developed with solid phase extraction (SPE) sample preparation. It was optimized for the analysis of various amino acids in rat plasma. Silica-based strong cationic exchange SPE cartridges were used to extract amino acids and minimize the ion-suppression effect. The SPE cleanup protocol was optimized and it was found that the sample loading pH was very critical for the recovery and reproducibility. When the plasma sample was mixed with 0.1 mol/L acetic acid (pH 2.8) a

Programmed cell death (PCD) has been implicated in the development and progression of radiation-induced lung injury (RILI). However, the specific PCD subtype most relevant to RILI remains unclear. We integrated bulk transcriptome datasets (GSE25295, GSE41789) and a single-cell RNA sequencing dataset (GSE211713) from lung tissue to analyze the cell type-specific PCD patterns in RILI. Differentially expressed genes (DEGs) were identified using limma for bulk data and Seurat for scRNA-seq data. PCD-related DEGs were extracted based on curated gene sets, followed by functional enrichment analyzes.

BACKGROUND: The long-term chronic effect of radiotherapy is commonly referred to as LRTI. Clinical complications such as skin atrophy, tissue fibrosis, endothelial damage, ulcer formation, and compromised wound healing are common sequela. Despite advances in medicine over the past decade, there remains a need for effective treatments for LRTI skin necrosis and ulcerations.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: This case series discusses cTOT in 3 patients of advanced age with LRTI wounds having undergone Mohs surgery. All wounds had been recalcitrant to multiple wound care treatments. All patients suffered

BACKGROUND: Postoperative radiation therapy (PORT) remains the critical therapy for stage III non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). Radiation induced lung injury (RILI) is common and affects the clinical outcome. Proton therapy (PT) is a new-style radiotherapy with accurate distribution of curative dose to tumor and increased organ-at-risk (OAR) sparing, which potentially decrease the incidence of RILI. Intensity modulated proton therapy (IMPT) is more flexible and conformal one.
CASE DESCRIPTION: In the case, we report a 47-year-old man with stage III locally advanced lung adenocarcinoma devel

BACKGROUND/AIMS: Radiation therapy is an important treatment for thoracic cancer; however, side effects accompanied with radiotherapy lead to limited tumor control and a decline in patient quality of life. Among these side effects, radiation-induced lung injury (RILI) is the most serious and common. Hence, an effective remedy for RILI is needed. Mesenchymal stromal cells (MSCs) are multipotent adult stem cells that have been demonstrated to be an effective treatment in some disease caused by tissue damage. However, unlike other injuries, RILI received limited therapeutic effects from implanted
