Eighteen patients with primary fixed rectal cancer as judged by digital rectal examination (DRE) were included. They all had radiation therapy with 60 Gy in 30 fractions combined with oral UFT and Isovorin. All patients were evaluated by DRE and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) before and after treatment. We report a study of 100 patients admitted to the Grenoble Regional Teaching Hospital between July 1985 and February 1994 for femoral neuralgia due to degenerative spinal disease. A herniated disk resulting in nerve root impingement was found in 79 patients (83 herniated disks) and lumbar spinal stenosis in 21. Seven patients with Frykman type 7 and 8 distal radial fractures, who had been treated with external fixation, were noted to have significant over-distraction of 5-8 mm in the radio-carpal and mid-carpal joints. One patient, who also had abnormal negative ulnar variance of 2 mm, had a fair result using modified Gartland and Werly (1951) criteria. The remaining six patients had good results, indicating that over-distraction does not significantly alter the final outcome, so long as a normal distal radio-ulnar relationship is maintained.
