Diminishing Returns Among Black Patients With Cancer: The Intersection of Race and Neighborhood Socioeconomic Status.

PURPOSE: Despite narrowing racial gaps, disparities persist across cancer types and socioeconomic levels. The diminishing returns hypothesis suggests that economic advantage yields fewer health benefits for Black individuals but is largely unexplored in the context of cancer. We examined the diminishing returns among Black and White individuals across cancer types using a nationally representative study population. METHODS: The study analyzed cancer-specific survival among 5.3 million non-Hispanic Black and White adults diagnosed with primary cancer (2006-2020) using SEER-22. We assessed how

Loneliness and Well-Being: Exploring the Stress-Buffering Role of Neighborhood Cohesion.

Loneliness is a well-established social stressor associated with poorer mental health and lower life satisfaction. However, limited research has examined psychosocial resources that may buffer these associations. This study investigates whether neighborhood cohesion moderates the relationships between loneliness and these outcomes, and whether this moderating role varies by gender over time. Data were drawn from two waves (2017-2019 and 2020-2022) of the United Kingdom Household Longitudinal Study (N = 14,787 individuals; 29,574 person-years)-the only waves capturing data on both neighborhood

Home and Neighborhood Food Environment Measures and Weight-for-Age z-Scores Among Children Aged 1-5 Years: An Exploratory Cross-Sectional Analysis.

Background/Objectives: Childhood obesity is prevalent in the United States, and although food environments (FEs) may be related to child weight, findings remain inconsistent. This study evaluated neighborhood and home FEs' associations with children's weight and explored interactive effects of the neighborhood and home FEs on child weight. We hypothesized that children exposed to less healthy neighborhood and home FEs would have higher weight. Methods: This secondary analysis leveraged baseline data from caregiver-child dyads (n = 115) enrolled in an obesity intervention trial (HABITS). The Mo

Neighborhood food store and subsequent health and well-being of older adults in Japan: an outcome-wide study.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Evidence on neighborhood food stores and public health is limited. This study examined the association of availability of neighborhood food stores and health and well-being. METHODS: We used three-wave data (2013, 2016, and 2019) from a nationwide cohort study of physically and cognitively independent older adults ≥65 years old in Japan. Exposure was the perceived availability of neighborhood food stores in 2016. We assessed 40 health/well-being outcomes in 2019 across seven domains; physical/cognitive health, health behaviors, mental health, psychological well-bein

Community human settlement and self-rated health among older adults: the mediating role of sleep quality.

INTRODUCTION: Against the backdrop of rapid population aging, the community human settlement, as a crucial social environmental factor influencing the health levels of older adults, has increasingly become a focal point in public health research. METHODS: Based on survey data from 2,113 older adults in Shanghai, China, this study employed the entropy method to construct a multi-dimensional community human settlement evaluation system encompassing the physical environment, social environment, and service accessibility. Multiple regression, instrumental variable methods, and mediation effect mo

Neighborhood Deprivation and Hypertensive Disorders of Pregnancy: Does Social Support Modify the Association?

BACKGROUND: Previous studies have reported associations between neighborhood deprivation and hypertensive disorders of pregnancy (HDP), but without considering effect measure modification by social support. METHODS: This study used the Nulliparous Pregnancy Outcomes Study: Monitoring Mothers-To-Be longitudinal cohort, which recruited participants between 2010 and 2013 across the United States. We used linear probability models with robust standard errors to estimate risk differences for associations of the area deprivation index (ADI) and social support with HDP. Perceived social support was

The potential effects of hypothetical PM2.5 interventions on childhood autism in different neighborhood socioeconomic contexts.

Particulate air pollution is associated with autism spectrum disorder (ASD), with disadvantaged neighborhoods potentially increasing vulnerability due to stress or other social determinants of health. Understanding the impact of air pollution interventions on ASD incidence across neighborhood disadvantage levels can guide policies to protect vulnerable populations. We examined 2 sets of hypothetical particulate matter (PM)2.5 interventions: percentage reduction and regulatory standards as thresholds, to assess their potential effects on ASD cumulative incidence. Using G-computation under a cou

The nexus between neighborhood socioeconomic environment and substance-positive driving behavior: A spatial analysis in the Chicago metropolitan area.

INTRODUCTION: Numerous public health and transportation studies have established a strong link between low-socioeconomic status and impaired driving. However, few analyze how a neighborhood's socioeconomic environment influences individual driving behavior. METHOD: To address this gap, we conducted a spatial econometric analysis at the neighborhood level, assessing the impact of socioeconomic conditions on alcohol and psychoactive drug-related crashes within zip code areas that are neighbored to each other. We merged hospital and crash data to create a dataset of drivers involved in substance

Exploring modifiable neighborhood risk factors for fatal opioid overdose: a case-control study in two US cities.

To explore associations between physical and social neighborhood factors and fatal opioid overdose, we remotely visited 2018-2019 fatal opioid overdose locations in New York City (n = 2867) and Chicago (n = 1677) via Google Street View and used a reliable and valid tool to assess 65 street block characteristics. We compared these locations to a proportional sample of blocks with no 2018-2019 overdoses (New York City n = 2093; Chicago n = 1148). We used logistic regression to explore associations between block characteristics and odds of an overdose event, controlling for neighborhood-level cov

Neighborhood Deprivation and Symptom Burden Among Older Adults After Hospitalization for COVID-19.

Persistent symptoms following COVID-19 disproportionately affect older adults and may be exacerbated by neighborhood socioeconomic deprivation. We evaluated the association between neighborhood deprivation and symptom burden after COVID-19 hospitalization among 298 older adults from five Connecticut hospitals (June 2020-June 2021). Symptom burden was measured using the Edmonton Symptom Assessment System at baseline and 1, 3, and 6 months post-discharge, while neighborhood deprivation was assessed with the Area Deprivation Index. Using Bayesian linear mixed models adjusted for demographic and c

Perceptions About Housing and Neighborhood Characteristics Among Aging Adult Black Americans in Two Predominantly Black, Low-Income Neighborhoods in Pittsburgh: A Multi-Method Analysis.

The life expectancy gap between Black and White Americans has narrowed, but progress remains slow due to the persistent consequences of lifetime exposure to structural and interpersonal experiences of racism and discrimination in various settings, for example, disadvantaged housing, neighborhood, and economic conditions. It is important to understand challenges and facilitators to healthy aging among Black Americans, i.e., maintaining functional ability and well-being in older age. We explore the intersection of housing, neighborhoods, and healthy aging among Black adults who live in two predo

Structural and social determinants of dementia risk among adults racialized as Black: Results from a community-based system dynamics approach.

INTRODUCTION: Alzheimer's disease and related dementias (ADRD) disproportionately affect Black Americans compared to non-Hispanic White individuals. We examined perceived dementia risk factors among Black adults in St. Louis via a participatory approach. METHODS: In 36 community-based system dynamics workshops (CBSD), 234 participants co-created causal loop diagrams capturing influences on dementia. We analyzed these diagrams using ecological methods to identify a shared core model and examine variation by neighborhood-level deprivation. RESULTS: CBSD revealed a framework for how economic ha

Caring for Communities: Comparing Health Care System Patient Populations to Regional Populations.

BACKGROUND: Recent years have seen an increase in the number and size of integrated health care delivery systems in the USA. The size and sophistication of these systems afford a greater focus on population health, leading to a fundamental question: How do the patients of these systems compare to the underlying regional populations that the systems serve? OBJECTIVE: To demonstrate an approach to answering this question for a large public integrated delivery system, with a particular focus on neighborhood social determinants of health (SDOH). DESIGN: We present a descriptive, graphical compar

Associations between neighborhood greenery and birth outcomes in a North Carolina cohort.

BACKGROUND: Higher levels of neighborhood greenery have been associated with improved birth outcomes. However, many studies use metrics relying on vegetation density and are not able to distinguish types of greenery or spatial context, which may result in variation in potential benefits. OBJECTIVE: We examined relationships between term low birth weight (TLBW) and preterm birth (PTB), and different types of neighborhood greenery (i.e., tree cover, herbaceous cover, and aggregate greenery) within various spatial contexts (i.e., Euclidean distance and network distance-based buffers, and busy ro

Neighborhood support as a protective factor for cognition: Associations with sleep, depression, and stress.

INTRODUCTION: Sleep, depression, stress, and neighborhood support are independently linked to cognition, but how these factors interact when sleep quality is poor remains understudied. METHODS: We analyzed cross-sectional baseline data from 233 adults aged ≥ 65 years in the Aging Adult Brain Connectome study. Sleep quality, depressive symptoms, stress, and neighborhood support were assessed with validated scales, and cognition was measured using the Preclinical Alzheimer's Cognitive Composite (PACC). Models tested two- and three-way interactions, adjusting for sociodemographics. RESULTS: Poo
