The role of cytological analysis of nasal mucosa in seasonal and perennial rhinitis was addressed. The study was carried out in 55 subjects (25 females, 30 males) with seasonal allergic rhinitis and 44 patients (28 females, 16 males) with perennial allergic rhinitis. Cockroach extracts are known to contain powerful allergens. In some parts of the world the majority of asthmatics have been shown to be allergic to cockroaches. We have evaluated the prevalence of sensitization to the cockroaches Blattella germanica and Trogoderma angustum in a Swiss population with chronic, non-seasonal asthma and rhinitis. Sixteen patients with allergic rhinitis were recruited into a double-blind crossover protocol studying the immediate effect of nedocromil sodium (NS) on the pattern of nasal symptoms and secretions after allergen challenge. Pemirolast is a potent, long-acting, orally effective antiallergic agent evaluated for clinical activity in prevention of symptoms of seasonal allergic rhinitis. A double-blind, cross-over comparison of flunisolide nasal spray and its inactive aqueous vehicle has been carried out in fifty patients suffering from perennial allergic rhinitis. In a seven-week double-blind crossover study, Disofrol (dexbrompheniramine maleate +d-isoephedrine sulphate) was compared with Lunerin (brompheniramine + 2-amino-1-phenyl-propanol-(1)-hydrochloride) and with placebo in the treatment of vasomotor rhinitis in thirty-one patients. From the patients' evaluations on diary cards Disofrol reduced the symptom running nose to a higher degree than Lunerin, an effect possibly ascribable to a greater anticholinergic activity. Both preparations had equal ability to relieve nasal blockage and both combinations were found to be more effective than placebo.

In a double-blind crossover trial, 24 patients with perennial rhinitis have been treated with 2% disodium cromoglycate (DSCG) nasal spray. 15 patients preferred DSCG to placebo, 9 patients showed no preference.
