Learning Curve of Robotic End-to-Side Microanastomoses.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Robotics are becoming increasingly widespread within various neurosurgical subspecialties, but data pertaining to their feasibility in vascular neurosurgery are limited. We present our novel attempt to evaluate the learning curve of a robotic platform for microvascular anastomoses. METHODS: One hundred and sixty one sutures were performed and assessed. Fourteen anastomoses (10 robotic [MUSA-2 Microsurgical system; Microsure] and 4 hand-sewn) were performed by the senior author on 1.5-mm caliber tubes and recorded with the Kinevo 900 (Zeiss) operative microscope. We …

Applications of robot-assisted UV disinfection in dentistry.

Maintaining a microbial-free environment in healthcare facilities is more widely recognized as an essential component of therapies to minimize transmission of viruses associated with healthcare sector. The global spread of COVID-19 and recent outbreaks have presented humanity with previously unheard-of challenges. The development of autonomous disinfection robots seems to be necessary given the urgent need for constant sterilization in the face of a labor shortage. Due to their automated and perceived cost advantages by eliminating cleaning staff, these robots are being advertised more and mor

Robotic management of superior mesenteric artery syndrome.

Wilkie's syndrome is an unusual cause of upper intestinal obstruction due to mechanical compression of the superior mesenteric artery (SMA) to the duodenum, with nonspecific symptoms, whose diagnosis is confirmed by angiotomography. Initially, the treatment is conservative to regain weight and restore mesenteric adipose tissue, associated with postural changes of the patient. If this fails, surgical treatment is indicated, being laparoscopic duodenojejunostomy described as the gold standard. Robotics' assistance is feasible and safe to carry out the procedure. We present the case of a 21-year-…

Robot-assisted resection of choledochal cyst in neonates.

OBJECTIVE: Laparoscopic choledochectomy and hepatojejunostomy have been reported in children since 1995, but this procedure is technically demanding. Robotic surgical systems can simplify complex minimally invasive procedures. Currently, few reports have been made on neonates. We present the experience of 6 cases of neonatal CC(choledochal cysts). STUDY DESIGN: Between January 2022 and December 2023, 6 neonates underwent robotic resection of choledochal cyst and hepaticojejunostomy using the Da Vinci surgical system at Children's Hospital, Zhejiang University School of Medicine, a high-volume

Robot-Assisted Training to Improve Proprioception of Wrist.

In recent years, robot-assisted training has been shown to significantly improve motor function and proprioception in people with functional disabilities, but the efficiency of proprioceptive acuity was unclear. To characterize the efficiency of joint proprioceptive acuity improvement in space, we designed a robot-assisted ipsilateral joint position matching experiment using the wrist as the study object. We conducted 2-way repeated measures ANOVA on error data before and after training in 12 healthy subjects and mapped the distribution of wrist proprioceptive learning ability in different wor

Stiffness Change for Reconfiguration of Inflated Beam Robots.

Abstract Active control of the shape of soft robots is challenging. Despite having an infinite number of passive degrees of freedom (DOFs), soft robots typically only have a few actively controllable DOFs, limited by the number of degrees of actuation (DOAs). The complexity of actuators restricts the number of DOAs that can be incorporated into soft robots. Active shape control is further complicated by the buckling of soft robots under compressive forces; this is particularly challenging for compliant continuum robots due to their long aspect ratios. In this study, we show how variable stiffn

Minimally invasive robotic-assisted lumbar laminectomy.

AIMS: To report the development of the technique for minimally invasive lumbar decompression using robotic-assisted navigation. METHODS: Robotic planning software was used to map out bone removal for a laminar decompression after registration of CT scan images of one cadaveric specimen. A specialized acorn-shaped bone removal robotic drill was used to complete a robotic lumbar laminectomy. Post-procedure advanced imaging was obtained to compare actual bony decompression to the surgical plan. After confirming accuracy of the technique, a minimally invasive robotic-assisted laminectomy was perf

Quantification of surgical workflow during robotic proctectomy.

BACKGROUND: Surgical workflow assessments offer insight regarding procedure variability. We utilised an objective method to evaluate workflow during robotic proctectomy (RP). METHODS: We annotated 31 RPs and used Spearman's correlation to measure the correlation of step time and step visit frequency with console time (CT) and total operative time (TOT). RESULTS: Strong correlations were seen with CT and step times for inferior mesenteric vein dissection and ligation (ρ = 0.60, ρ = 0.60), lateral-to-medial splenic flexure mobilisation (SFM) (ρ = 0.63), left rectal dissection (ρ = 0.64) and me

Robotic resection of mediastinal masses: a decade of experience.

BACKGROUND: Robotic-assisted surgery is gaining an increasing popularity in the past decades within the field of thoracic surgery, especially in mediastinal tumor resection. In the narrow space of the mediastinum surrounded by a complexity of anatomical structures, robotic-assisted thoracic surgery (RATS) shows its potential due to its enhanced dexterity, the three-dimensional view with great maneuverability and tremor adjustment in comparison to other minimal invasive techniques. Primary resection is the therapy of choice for most common mediastinal masses in the anterior (thymoma) and poster

Our experience with robotic-assisted thymic surgery.

Thoracic surgery is increasingly influenced by the development of minimally invasive approaches which have also influenced surgery in the area of the anterior mediastinum. The previously standard approach to the thymus via partial sternotomy was gradually replaced by the videothoracoscopic approach in most cases. In recent years, robotically assisted surgery has been gaining ground worldwide in this area, as well. The aim of our paper is to provide a comprehensive overview of procedures in the field of the thymus, including their indications, and to share our first experience with robot-assist

Updates in Robotic Head and Neck Reconstructive Surgery.

The use of robotics in head and neck surgery has drastically increased over the past two decades. Transoral robotic surgery has revolutionized the surgical approach to the upper aerodigestive tract including the oropharynx and supraglottic larynx. The expanded use and improving technology of robotics have allowed for new approaches in both the ablative and reconstructive aspects of head and neck surgery. Here, we discuss the recent updates in robotics in head and neck surgery and future directions the field may turn.

Robotic Cytoreductive Surgery With Heated Intraperitoneal Chemotherapy.

Cytoreductive surgery with heated intraperitoneal chemotherapy (CRS-HIPEC) is traditionally an open operation given the dissection required during cytoreduction. There are reports of minimally invasive HIPECs, but CRS to an accepted completeness of cytoreduction (CCR) has been described less frequently. We report a patient with metastatic low-grade mucinous appendiceal neoplasm (LAMN) to the peritoneum treated with robotic CRS-HIPEC. A 49-year-old male presented to our center following a laparoscopic appendectomy at an outside facility with final pathology showing LAMN. He had a peritoneal can
