Foramen magnum position in bipedal mammals.

The anterior position of the human foramen magnum is often explained as an adaptation for maintaining balance of the head atop the cervical vertebral column during bipedalism and the assumption of orthograde trunk postures. Accordingly, the relative placement of the foramen magnum on the basicranium has been used to infer bipedal locomotion and hominin status for a number of Mio-Pliocene fossil taxa. Nonetheless, previous studies have struggled to validate the functional link between foramen magnum position and bipedal locomotion. Here, we test the hypothesis that an anteriorly positioned fora

Brain development in rodents and humans: Identifying benchmarks of maturation and vulnerability to injury across species.

Hypoxic-ischemic and traumatic brain injuries are leading causes of long-term mortality and disability in infants and children. Although several preclinical models using rodents of different ages have been developed, species differences in the timing of key brain maturation events can render comparisons of vulnerability and regenerative capacities difficult to interpret. Traditional models of developmental brain injury have utilized rodents at postnatal day 7-10 as being roughly equivalent to a term human infant, based historically on the measurement of post-mortem brain weights during the 197

Persistent Giardia spp. and Trichuris spp. infection in maras (Dolichotis patagonum) at a zoo in Greece.

The mara (Dolichotis patagonum) is a species classified as "Near Threatened" by the International Union for Conservation of Nature. In the wild, it inhabits only Argentina, but it is also kept in zoos around the world. In order to investigate the endoparasites of the maras kept in the Attica Zoological Park, Greece, four fecal examinations were performed in a period of 4 yr (2008-2011) by standard parasitologic methods. Cysts of the protozoan parasite Giardia spp. and eggs of the nematode Trichuris spp. were found in all four examinations. The possible routes of infection of the maras and the

Using the rat forced swim test to assess antidepressant-like activity in rodents.

The forced swim test (FST) is one of the most commonly used animal models for assessing antidepressant-like behavior. This protocol details using the FST in rats, which takes place over 48 h and is followed by the video analysis of the behavior. The swim test involves the scoring of active (swimming and climbing) or passive (immobility) behavior when rodents are forced to swim in a cylinder from which there is no escape. There are two versions that are used, namely the traditional and modified FSTs, which differ in their experimental setup. For both versions, a pretest of 15 min (although a nu

Islet transplantation in rodents. Do encapsulated islets really work?

CONTEXT: Diabetes mellitus type I affects around 240 million people in the world and only in the USA 7.8% of the population. It has been estimated that the costs of its complications account for 5% to 10% of the total healthcare spending around the world. According to World Health Organization, 300 million people are expected to develop diabetes mellitus by the year 2025. The pancreatic islet transplantation is expected to be less invasive than a pancreas transplant, which is currently the most commonly used approach. OBJECTIVES: To compare the encapsulated and free islet transplantation in r

Identification of novel Bartonella spp. in bats and evidence of Asian gray shrew as a new potential reservoir of Bartonella.

Many studies indicated that small mammals are important reservoirs for Bartonella species. Using molecular methods, several studies have documented that bats could harbor Bartonella. This study was conducted to investigate the relationship of Bartonella spp. identified in bats and small mammals living in the same ecological environment. During May 2009 and March 2010, a total of 102 blood specimens were collected. By whole blood culture and molecular identification, a total of 6 bats, 1 rodent and 9 shrews were shown to be infected by Bartonella species. After sequencing and phylogenetic analy

Ectoparasites (sucking lice, fleas and ticks) of small mammals in southeastern Kenya.

During 1998-2000, at least 14 species (n = 309) of small mammals were live-trapped and examined for ectoparasites in moist forests of the Taita and Shimba Hills and drier savannah habitats of Nguruman, southeastern Kenya. Ectoparasites were recorded from 11 species of mammals. Five species of sucking lice [Hoplopleura inexpectans Johnson, H. intermedia Kellogg & Ferris, Polyplax reclinata (Nitzsch), P. waterstoni Bedford and Schizophthirus graphiuri Ferris], six species of fleas (Ctenophthalmus leptodactylous Hubbard, Dinopsyllus grypurus Jordan & Rothschild, D. lypusus Jordan & Rothschild, Hy

Spleen deposition of Cryptococcus neoformans capsular glucuronoxylomannan in rodents occurs in red pulp macrophages and not marginal zone macrophages expressing the C-type lectin SIGN-R1.

The fate of microbial polysaccharides in host tissues is an important consideration because these compounds are often immune modulators. Splenic marginal zone macrophages that express the C-type lectin receptor SIGN-R1, take up neutral polysaccharides such as dextran and the capsular polysaccharide of Streptococcus pneumoniae. Given that the major component of Cryptococcus neoformans capsular polysaccharide, glucuronoxylomannan (GXM), localizes in the spleen when injected intravenously, we investigated whether GXM uptake was mediated by splenic macrophages expressing the SIGN-R1 receptor in mi

How to diagnose hantavirus infections and detect them in rodents and insectivores.

Hantaviruses are carried by rodents and insectivores in which they cause persistent and generally asymptomatic infections. Several hantaviruses can infect humans and many of them cause either haemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome (HFRS) in Eurasia or hantavirus cardiopulmonary syndrome (HCPS) in the Americas. In humans hantavirus infections are diagnosed using IgM-capture tests but also by RT-PCR detection of viral RNA. For detection of hantavirus infections in rodents and insectivores, serology followed by immunoblotting of, for example, lung tissue, and RT-PCR detection of viral RNA may be

American visceral leishmaniasis: wild animal hosts.

In Colombia it has been suggested that the rodent Proechimys canicollis may be a reservoir-host of Leishmania (L.) chagasi, the cause of American visceral leishmaniasis, based on polymerase chain reaction/hybridization tests. We have detected no infection in laboratory-bred specimens of another species, P. guyannensis, after their inoculation with promastigotes or amastigotes of this parasite from Amazonian Brazil.

Echinococcus multilocularis in a European beaver from Switzerland.

Infection with the larval stage of the cestode parasite Echinococcus multilocularis was diagnosed in a European beaver (Castor fiber) in central Switzerland. The animal was hit, run over by a car, and died of trauma. It was in normal body condition and no signs of disease were seen. At necropsy, multiple cystic structures up to 1 cm in diameter were found in the liver adjacent to the hilus. Within the parasite vesicles, multiple protoscolices were visible. The species was determined to be Echinococcus multilocularis by upon polymerase chain reaction and direct immunofluorescence with MAbG11-FI

Of rodents and ungulates and melatonin: creating a uniform code for darkness by different signaling mechanisms.

Melatonin synthesis in the mammalian pineal gland is one of the best investigated output pathways of the circadian clock because it can be readily measured and is tightly regulated by a clearly defined input, the neurotransmitter norepinephrine. In this system, a regulatory scenario was deciphered that is centered around the cyclic AMP pathway but shows peculiar species-specific differences. In rodents, the cyclic AMP-mediated, temporally sequential up-regulation of two transcription factors, the activator CREB (cyclic AMP-responsive element-binding protein) and the inhibitor ICER (inducible c

Retention of Leishmania (Leishmania) mexicana in naturally infected rodents from the State of Campeche, Mexico.

In the State of Campeche, Mexico, zoonotic cutaneous leishmaniasis is mainly due to Leishmania (L.) mexicana. The parasite population is maintained in a mammalian species, a reservoir in which the ideal course of infection should be long and relatively nonpathogenic. The objective of the present study was to document the retention of L. (L.) mexicana in 29 naturally infected rodents. These cricetids lived in captivity for up to two years and were tested monthly for the presence of the parasite, by cultures of needle aspirates from the base of the tail. Peromyscus yucatanicus and Ototylomys phy

Comparative views of electrophysiological parameters of large intestinal segments in pig, sheep, pony, guinea pig and rat.

Short circuit current (ISC) and transepithelial conductance (gt) across sheets of epithelia were measured in the caecum, the proximal and the distal colon of pig, sheep, pony, rat and guinea pig. The electrical parameters underline the basic segmental and species differences. The diversity of ISC demonstrates the different nature of electrogenic transport mechanisms, and data clearly show the heterogeneity with respect to transport mechanisms along the large intestine in the various species. The great differences in amiloride sensitive ISC indicate the variabilities in the electrogenic Na tran

Intestinal calcium transport in mole-rats (Cryptomys damarensis and Heterocephalus glaber) is independent of both genomic and non-genomic vitamin D mediation.

The role of vitamin D in mineral uptake in the gastrointestinal tract (GIT) of mole-rats (Heterocephalus glaber and Cryptomys damarensis; family Bathyergidae), animals with a naturally impoverished vitamin D status, was investigated. We measured relative rates of passage of radioactive markers, mode of calcium (Ca) uptake, paracellular movement and the opening of voltage-sensitive Ca channels (VSCCs) along the GIT with and without oral vitamin D3 supplementation. The ratio of relative absorption of labelled 45Ca to [14C]polyethylene glycol ([14C]PEG) indicated that within 24 h more than 88% of
