Dracunculiasis is an ancient disease which international organizations are working to eradicate. It has been suggested that the caduceus and Aesculap's staff may be based on the treatment of dracunculiasis from the time of Hippocrates, which is still the most modern treatment available. The article discusses dracunculiasis with emphasis on the historical aspects and the possible connection with the symbol of medicine--a snake wound around a staff.

BACKGROUND: Functional gastrointestinal disorders (FGIDs), now known as disorders of gut-brain interaction (DGBIs), such as Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) and Functional Dyspepsia (FD), significantly impact global health, reducing quality of life and burdening healthcare systems. This study addresses the epidemiological gap in Poland, focusing on the West Pomeranian Voivodeship.
METHODS: We conducted a cross-sectional study of 2070 Caucasian patients (58.2% female, mean age 57.5 ± 15.1 years) undergoing gastrointestinal endoscopic examinations at Pomeranian Medical University from 2021 to 202…

BACKGROUND AND AIM: Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is a common functional bowel disease, and the overlap with upper functional gastrointestinal disorders (FGIDs) is popular. However, the coexistent upper GI symptom profiles, upper FGID spectra, and related risk factors among IBS subjects remain unclear in mainland of China.
METHODS: Consecutive patients from the outpatient gastroenterology clinics of three tertiary hospitals in China were enrolled in this multicenter study. All upper GI symptoms occurring at least once a week in the last 3 months were recorded. Diagnostic criteria of function…

Clinical management of constipation has evolved from the prescription of dietary supplements, to potent stimulant laxatives, to corrective surgeries for organic blockage. Yet constipation does not respond to a one-size-fits-all treatment. In recent decades, the Bristol Stool Form Scale and Rome III diagnostic criteria have allowed for algorithmic diagnosis, yet these criteria could benefit from further extension and meaningful discussion. This review incorporates pertinent clinical updates and uses the anatomy and physiology of constipation as helpful signposts for the practicing clinician.

The Authors examined surgical case studies for the 20-year period from February 1968 to February 1988 concerning hysterectomies performed for obstetric reasons at the "La Sapienza" University of Rome, Obstetrics and Gynaecology Department; these numbered 35 out of 69,677 births. They also considered hysterectomies carried out during caesarean sections, during birth or the postpartum period, during the puerperium and after miscarriage. They also analyzed reasons for the action taken, the type of operation, the length of the gestation period, the mother's age, and transfusions given.

The arthritis urica is defined as a relatively rare, at the same time facultative symptom of different metabolic and other disturbances (primary and secondary gout). As a rule it is observed only several years of the beginning of the hyperuric-anemia nearly exclusively in males and is only one form of manifestation of the wide-spread complex gout syndrome. It is proposed to supplement the criteria for gout or arthritis urica of Rome 1961 and New York 1966 by new knowledge on the uncharacteristic gouty arthropathy. It is particularly referred to method problems of the determination of uric acid…

Reflux hypersensitivity (RH) is a subtype of gastroesophageal reflux disease. The Rome IV criteria separated RH from the original nonerosive reflux disease subgroup and classified it as a new functional oesophageal disease. Recently, the pathogenesis of RH has become the focus of research. According to the latest research reports, upregulation of acid-sensitive receptors, distribution of calcitonin gene-related peptide-positive nerve fibres, and psychiatric comorbidity have key roles in the pathogenesis of RH. This work reviews the latest findings regarding RH mechanisms.

Functional heartburn is a frequent disease which should be considered when heartburn does not respond to proton pump inhibitor (PPI) treatment. Functional heartburn is defined in the Rome-III-criteria. Differential diagnoses like gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), non erosive reflux disease (NERD) and hypertensive esophagus are diagnosed employing an endoscopy and a 24h-pH-study. Since clinical trials are lacking, treatment approaches are empirical. Successful treatment includes adequate information of the patient, identification of the cardinal symptom and setting of realistic goals.

Although health-related quality of life (HRQoL) measure instruments in functional dyspepsia (FD) have been available for many years, as in other functional gastrointestinal disorders, their real application in clinical practice, beyond therapeutic studies, is unknown. For first time, the new Rome IV diagnostic criteria include the consideration of symptom severity enough to impact on usual patients' activities. A new focus on the management of this entity is proposed, therefore we should carefully revise the HRQoL measures and define its real role in our clinical practice.

This paper begins with a review of Roman grain market policies. It is argued that policies such as forced sales and maximum prices made urban consumers hesitant to rely on the market for secure access to grain. Consequently, consumers hoarded grain in their homes. The hoarded grain formed a volatile fuel ready to be ignited by the arrival of the bubonic plague bacillus. This scenario fits events in the city of Rome under Commodus. Attested grain market interventions were followed by a severe epidemic, arguably bubonic plague, which decimated the city's population.

Malignant periampullary and ampullary tumors represent an anatomic and clinical entity of complex surgical approach due to the difficulty in setting out an early diagnosis, for the back of symptoms at early stages. The Authors at the Department of Surgery and Medical Technology Applications "F. Durante", University of Rome "La Sapienza", since 1990 to 2001 observed 19 cases. The results of surgical treatment of these tumors are here reported. By the analysis of the cases it is evident that long-term survival if mainly conditioned by prompt diagnosis stage of the tumor, and patient status befor…
