Development and Pilot Testing of an Internet-Based Self-Help Intervention for Depression for Indian Users.

There is a dearth of published research on uptake and utility of mental health apps in India, despite a rising global trend in the application of technology in the field of mental health. We describe the development and pilot testing of a self-help intervention for depression, PUSH-D (Practice and Use Self-Help for Depression) for urban Indians. This guided self-help app, with essential and optional zone sections, was developed to provide a comprehensive coverage of therapeutic strategies drawn from cognitive behavior therapy, interpersonal therapy, supportive psychotherapy, and positive psych

Behavioral Versus Nonbehavioral Guided Self-Help for Parents of Children With Externalizing Disorders in a Randomized Controlled Trial.

Self-help interventions for parents, which have a behavioral basis, are considered to be an effective treatment option for children with externalizing disorders. Nonbehavioral approaches are widely used but have little empirical evidence. The main objective of this trial was to compare the efficacy of a behavioral and a nonbehavioral guided self-help program for parents. Families of children (aged 4-11 years) diagnosed with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) or oppositional defiant disorder (ODD) were randomized to either a behavioral or a nonbehavioral guided self-help program in

SOURCE, a learned resourcefulness program to reduce caregiver burden and improve quality of life for older family caregivers.

BACKGROUND: Family members often undertake caregiving responsibilities over long periods of time, which could lead to caregiving burden. A theory-based and culturally sensitive learned resourcefulness program may help family caregivers mitigate stress by learning and using self-help strategies. OBJECTIVES: This study's aim is to use rigorous methods to investigate the effects of a learned resourcefulness program called SOURCE (Chen et al., Geriatric Nursing, 2021, 45, 1129) to reduce caregiver burden and improve quality of life (QOL) for family caregivers. SOURCE is an acronym for the six sel

Transdiagnostic associations between subjective gesture behaviour and objective performance in schizophrenia and depression.

Social communication deficits are common across mental-health disorders, yet little is known about how individuals perceive their own gesture behaviours. Gaining insight into this, particularly across different disorders, could enhance our understanding of social communicative impairments and disruptions in self-awareness. The current study included 274 participants: N = 113 with schizophrenia, N = 65 with depression and N = 96 healthy controls where we compared self-reported gesture behaviours in social and non-social contexts. These self-reports where further explored in relation to objectiv

Comparison of face-to-face versus email guided self-help for binge eating: study protocol for a randomised controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Guided self-help is a recommended first-step treatment for bulimia nervosa, binge eating disorder and atypical variants of these disorders. Further research is needed to compare guided self-help that is delivered face-to-face versus via email. METHODS/DESIGN: This clinical trial uses a randomised, controlled design to investigate the effectiveness of providing guided self-help either face-to-face or via e-mail, also using a delayed treatment control condition. At least 17 individuals are required per group, giving a minimum N of 51. DISCUSSION: Symptom outcomes will be assessed a

Randomized trial of nicotine lozenges and phone counseling for smokeless tobacco cessation.

INTRODUCTION: Relatively few treatment programs have been developed specifically for smokeless tobacco (ST) users who want to quit. Their results suggest that self-help materials, telephone counseling, and nicotine lozenges are efficacious. This study provides the first direct examination of the separate and combined effects of telephone counseling and lozenges. METHODS: We recruited ST users online (N = 1067) and randomly assigned them to 1 of 3 conditions: (a) a lozenge group (n = 356), who were mailed 4-mg nicotine lozenges; (b) a coach calls group (n = 354), who were offered 3 coaching ph

An evaluation of a CBT group for women with low self-esteem.

BACKGROUND: Self-esteem is an important factor in the development and maintenance of good psychological health. Low self-esteem can be a consequence of mental health disorders (such as depression, anxiety and panic) or it can be a vulnerability factor for the development of such problems. AIMS AND METHOD: The current study reports pilot findings from a Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) group intervention for 37 adult women with low self-esteem, based on Fennell's Overcoming Low Self-Esteem Self-Help Course. RESULTS: Findings suggest that the group is (statistically and clinically) effectiv

Long-term effectiveness of cognitive-behavioural self-help intervention for nightmares.

Nightmares are a prevalent disorder leading to daily impairments. Two cognitive-behavioural self-help interventions--imagery rehearsal and exposure--recently showed short-term efficacy compared to a waiting-list and a group that recorded their nightmares. This paper reports the long-term results of the imagery rehearsal (n=103) and exposure (n=95) interventions. Participants were assigned randomly to a condition after completing baseline measurements; they received a 6-week self-help intervention and completed questionnaires 4, 16 and 42 weeks after end of treatment. Initial effects on nightma

Protocol and recruitment results from a randomized controlled trial comparing group phone-based versus newsletter interventions for weight loss maintenance among rural breast cancer survivors.

Obesity is a risk factor for breast cancer recurrence and death. Women who reside in rural areas have higher obesity prevalence and suffer from breast cancer treatment-related disparities compared to urban women. The objective of this 5-year randomized controlled trial is to compare methods for delivering extended care for weight loss maintenance among rural breast cancer survivors. Group phone-based counseling via conference calls addresses access barriers, is more cost-effective than individual phone counseling, and provides group support which may be ideal for rural breast cancer survivors

Premorbid personality characteristics and attachment style moderate the effect of injury severity on occupational outcome in traumatic brain injury: another aspect of reserve.

The concept of "reserve" has been proposed to account for the mismatch between brain pathology and its clinical expression. Prior efforts to characterize this concept focused mostly on brain or cognitive reserve measures. The present study was a preliminary attempt to evaluate premorbid personality and emotional aspects as potential moderators in moderate-to-severe traumatic brain injury. Using structural equation modeling and multiple regression analyses, we found that premorbid personality characteristics provided the most robust moderator of injury severity on occupational outcome. Findings

Culturally-tailored smoking cessation for American Indians: study protocol for a randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Cigarette smoking is the number one cause of preventable death among American Indian and Alaska Natives, AI/ANs. Two out of every five AI/AN will die from tobacco-related diseases if the current smoking rates of AI/ANs (40.8%) persist. Currently, there is no proven, effective culturally-tailored smoking cessation program designed specifically for a heterogeneous population of AI.The primary aim of this group randomized clinical trial is to test the efficacy of "All Nations Breath of Life" (ANBL) program compared to a non-tailored "Current Best Practices" smoking cessation program a

Cognitive behavior therapy versus interpersonal psychotherapy for social anxiety disorder delivered via smartphone and computer: a randomized controlled trial.

In this study, a previously evaluated guided Internet-based cognitive behavior therapy for social anxiety disorder (SAD) was adapted for mobile phone administration (mCBT). The treatment was compared with a guided self-help treatment based on interpersonal psychotherapy (mIPT). The treatment platform could be accessed through smartphones, tablet computers, and standard computers. A total of 52 participants were diagnosed with SAD and randomized to either mCBT (n=27) or mIPT (n=25). Measures were collected at pre-treatment, during the treatment, post-treatment and 3-month follow-up. On the prim

A comparison of the effectiveness of cognitive behavioural interventions based on delivery features for elevated symptoms of depression in adolescents: A systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Depression is a public health problem and common amongst adolescents. Cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) is widely used to treat adolescent depression but existing research does not provide clear conclusions regarding the relative effectiveness of different delivery modalities. OBJECTIVES: The primary aim is to estimate the relative efficacy of different modes of CBT delivery compared with each other and control conditions for reducing depressive symptoms in adolescents. The secondary aim is to compare the different modes of delivery with regard to intervention completion/attriti

Regulating Obsessive-Like Thoughts: Comparison of Two Forms of Affective Labeling with Exposure Only in Participants with High Obsessive-Compulsive Symptoms.

OBJECTIVE: A growing body of research has shown that mere expression of affective words (affect labeling) can help dampen emotional responses, as reflected by these words. Previous studies revealed that affect labeling can reduce physiological anxiety responses of subjects suffering from anxiety disorders. In addition, multiple studies have shown that obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) individuals have difficulty understanding their own emotions. However, the effect of affect labeling is unknown for people with high- OC symptoms. METHOD: We used different forms of affect labeling (emotion ge

Effectiveness of Online Collaborative Care for Treating Mood and Anxiety Disorders in Primary Care: A Randomized Clinical Trial.

IMPORTANCE: Collaborative care for depression and anxiety is superior to usual care from primary care physicians for these conditions; however, challenges limit its provision in routine practice and at scale. Advances in technology may overcome these barriers but have yet to be tested. OBJECTIVE: To examine the effectiveness of combining an internet support group (ISG) with an online computerized cognitive behavioral therapy (CCBT) provided via a collaborative care program for treating depression and anxiety vs CCBT alone and whether providing CCBT in this manner is more effective than usual
