Profile of a short-acting κ-antagonist, LY2795050, on self-grooming behaviors, forced swim test and locomotor activity: sex comparison in mice.

BACKGROUND: Novel short-acting κ(kappa)-opioid receptor selective antagonists are translational tools to examine the impact of the κ-receptor/dynorphin system in assays related to central nervous system dysfunction (e.g., substance use disorders, anhedonia and depression). The effects of such compounds have been compared in males and females under very limited conditions. AIMS: The goal of this study was to examine potential sex differences in the effects of a κ-agonist and a short-acting κ-antagonist in an ethologically relevant test of anhedonia, the "splash test" of self-grooming, and also

Potential for community based surveillance of febrile diseases: Feasibility of self-administered rapid diagnostic tests in Iquitos, Peru and Phnom Penh, Cambodia.

Rapid diagnostic tests (RDTs) have the potential to identify infectious diseases quickly, minimize disease transmission, and could complement and improve surveillance and control of infectious and vector-borne diseases during outbreaks. The U.S. Defense Threat Reduction Agency's Joint Science and Technology Office (DTRA-JSTO) program set out to develop novel point-of-need RDTs for infectious diseases and deploy them for home use with no training. The aim of this formative study was to address two questions: 1) could community members in Iquitos, Peru and Phnom Penh, Cambodia competently use RD

Self-sampling HPV test in women not undergoing Pap smear for more than 5 years and factors associated with under-screening in Taiwan.

BACKGROUND/PURPOSE: Under-utilization of Papanicolaou (Pap) smear causes a gap in the prevention of cervical neoplasms. A prospective population-based study was conducted investigating whether a self-sampling human papillomavirus (HPV) test was feasible for under-users of Pap smear and factors associated with under-screening in Taiwan. METHODS: Women not having Pap smear screening for > 5 years were invited to participate in this study. Invitation letters and educational brochures were mailed to 4% of randomly selected eligible women from Taoyuan City, Taiwan, and responders received an HPV s

Self-assessed driver competence among novice drivers--a comparison of driving test candidate assessments and examiner assessments in a Dutch and Finnish sample.

PROBLEM: This study examined novice drivers' overconfidence by comparing their self-assessed driver competence with the assessments made by driving examiners. METHOD: A Finnish (n=2,739) and a Dutch sample (n=239) of drivers license candidates assessed their driver competence in six areas and took the driving test. RESULT AND DISCUSSION: In contrast to previous studies where drivers have assessed their skill in comparison to the average driver, a smaller proportion overestimated and a larger proportion made realistic self-assessments of their driver competence in the present study, where sel

Perception of people living with HIV in Bhutan on disclosing HIV status and willingness to distribute HIV self-testing kits to their sexual and drug-injecting partners.

In Bhutan, HIV testing uptake among key populations remains low, with most cases diagnosed late. Evidence shows index testing and partner notification services (PNS) enhance diagnosis among partners of people living with HIV (PLHIV). However, traditional PNS are limited by HIV related stigma, fear of disclosure, and partner reluctance to visit health facilities. Integrating HIV self-testing (HIVST) within the PNS provides an alternative for earlier diagnosis. This qualitative study used in-depth interviews to explore the feasibility and acceptability of index testing using HIVST among PLHIV. D…

Comparative efficacy, feasibility and acceptability of HPV DNA testing on first-void urine versus self-collected vaginal samples: a real-world study in a resource-limited setting.

INTRODUCTION: Self-sampling for cervical cancer screening is a promising strategy to improve coverage and reduce strain on health systems. First-void urine (FVU) has emerged as a non-invasive alternative to self-collected vaginal samples for detecting high-risk human papillomavirus (HPV). However, most supporting evidence is from colposcopy clinic settings and not from screening settings. This community-based study in Eastern India aimed to (1) assess agreement between HPV testing on FVU and vaginal samples, (2) compare their accuracy in detecting cervical intraepithelial neoplasia grade 2 (CI

The Prevalence and Associated Factors of HIV Self-Testing Among High-Risk Men Who Have Sex with Men in China: A Study Based on Bayesian Network Model.

Promoting HIV self-testing (HIVST) among men who have sex with men (MSM) is an effective strategy for preventing and controlling HIV infection. We aimed to explore the prevalence, associated factors, and probabilistic dependencies of HIVST uptake among HIV-negative MSM who engaged in condomless sex during the past 6 months in China using logistic regression and Bayesian networks. We performed analysis of baseline data from a large longitudinal randomized controlled trial. In total, 1800 MSM were included and 37.5% (n = 675) reported HIVST in the past 6 months. Multivariate logistic regression …

Increases in HIV status disclosure and sexual communication between South African men who have sex with men and their partners following use of HIV self-testing kits.

Availability of HIV self-testing may increase HIV testing frequency among men who have sex with men (MSM). It is unclear, however, if self-testing may impact HIV-related sexual behaviors among MSM, including HIV status disclosure and condom use. We conducted a mixed methods analysis of changes in HIV-related behaviors after HIV self-testing introduction, using data from 110 MSM participating in a feasibility and acceptability study of HIV self-testing in Mpumalanga Province, South Africa. We found increased HIV status disclosure from study participants to sexual partners after HIV self-testing…

Using individual stated-preferences to optimize HIV self-testing service delivery among men who have sex with men (MSM) in Malaysia: results from a conjoint-based analysis.

BACKGROUND: HIV self-testing (HIVST) has the potential to improve HIV testing uptake and frequency for key populations like MSM who experience multiple barriers accessing clinic-based HIV testing. In the absence of HIVST in Malaysia, there is no guidance to inform HIVST delivery. This study investigated the acceptability of HIVST and preferences about the HIVST service delivery approaches using a standardized stated preference method. METHODS: A cross-sectional online survey conducted between January and April 2019 assessed the interest in HIVST in 544 MSM in Malaysia. Participants ranked eig…

Protocol, rationale and design of SELPHI: a randomised controlled trial assessing whether offering free HIV self-testing kits via the internet increases the rate of HIV diagnosis.

BACKGROUND: Among men who have sex with men (MSM) in the UK, an estimated 28% have never tested for HIV and only 27% of those at higher risk test at least every 6 months. HIV self-testing (HIVST), where the person takes their own blood/saliva sample and processes it themselves, offers the opportunity to remove many structural and social barriers to testing. Although several randomised controlled trials are assessing the impact of providing HIVST on rates of HIV testing, none are addressing whether this results in increased rates of HIV diagnoses that link to clinical care. Linking to care is t…

The Mexican-American Trial of Community Health workers (MATCH): design and baseline characteristics of a randomized controlled trial testing a culturally tailored community diabetes self-management intervention.

OBJECTIVES: Community Health Workers (CHWs) have been recommended to reduce diabetes disparities, but few robust trials of this approach have been conducted. Limitations of prior studies include: unspecified a priori outcomes; lack of blinded outcome assessments; high participant attrition rates; and lack of attention to intervention fidelity. These limitations reflect challenges in balancing methodologic rigor with the needs of vulnerable populations. The Mexican-American Trial of Community Health workers (MATCH) was a blinded randomized controlled trial testing CHW efficacy in improving phys
