Fluorescent Probes for Endogenous Hydrogen Sulfide: Advances and Challenges.

Hydrogen sulfide (H2S), a well-known endogenous biological molecule, is an acidic, colorless gas notorious for its unpleasant rotten-egg smell. Unveiled as an endogenous signaling molecule, H2S demonstrates significant biological functionalities in various physio-pathological processes. Dysregulation of H2S expression in biological systems has been implicated in the development of numerous diseases, including cancer. Consequently, precisely sensing H2S in cells and organisms becomes crucial for understanding fundamental cellular functions. Fluorescent probes have become a potent tool for monit

Adaptive rewiring: a general principle for neural network development.

The nervous system, especially the human brain, is characterized by its highly complex network topology. The neurodevelopment of some of its features has been described in terms of dynamic optimization rules. We discuss the principle of adaptive rewiring, i.e., the dynamic reorganization of a network according to the intensity of internal signal communication as measured by synchronization or diffusion, and its recent generalization for applications in directed networks. These have extended the principle of adaptive rewiring from highly oversimplified networks to more neurally plausible ones.

Electronic sensitization enhanced p-type ammonia gas sensing of zinc doped MoS2/RGO composites.

Zinc (Zn) doping induced synergetic effects of defects engineering and heterojunction in Molybdenum disulphide/Reduced graphene oxide (MoS2/RGO) effectively enhances the p-type Volatile organic compounds (VOC) gas sensing traits and helps in tailoring the over dependence on noble metals for surface sensitization. Through this work, we have successfully prepared Zn doped MoS2 grafted on RGO employing an in-situ hydrothermal method. Optimal doping concentration of Zn dopants in the MoS2 lattice triggered more active sites on the basal plane of MoS2 with the aid of defects promoted by the zinc do

Nanowire biosensors with olfactory proteins: towards a genuine electronic nose with single molecule sensitivity and high selectivity.

We describe the concept and roadmap of an engineered electronic nose with specificity towards analytes that differ by as little as one carbon atom, and sensitivity of being able to electrically register a single molecule of analyte. The analyte could be anything that natural noses can detect, e.g. trinitrotoluene (TNT), cocaine, aromatics, volatile organic compounds etc. The strategy envisioned is to genetically engineer a fused olfactory odorant receptor (odorant receptor (OR), a membrane-bound G-protein coupled receptor (GPCR) with high selectivity) to an ion channel protein, which opens in

Development of a dry-reagent-based nucleic acid-sensing platform by coupling thermostabilised LATE-PCR assay to an oligonucleotide-modified lateral flow biosensor.

In this study, we report for the first time the development of a dry-reagent-based nucleic acid-sensing platform by combining a thermostabilised linear-after-the-exponential (LATE)-PCR assay with a one-step, hybridisation-based nucleic acid lateral flow biosensor. The nucleic acid-sensing platform was designed to overcome the need for stringent temperature control during transportation or storage of reagents and reduces the dependency on skilled personnel by decreasing the overall assay complexity and hands-on time. The platform was developed using toxigenic Vibrio cholerae as the model organi

A drop-tower experiment to determine the threshold of gravity for inducing motion sickness in fish.

It has been repeatedly shown earlier that some fish of a given batch reveal motion sickness (a kinetosis) at the transition from 1 g to microgravity. In the course of parabolic aircraft flight experiments, it has been demonstrated that kinetosis susceptibility is correlated with asymmetric inner ear otoliths (i.e., differently weighed statoliths on the right and the left side of the head) or with genetically predispositioned malformed cells within the sensory epithelia of the inner ear. Hitherto, the threshold of gravity perception for inducing kinetotic behavior as well as the relative import

In vitro analyses of interactions between olfactory receptor growth cones and glial cells that mediate axon sorting and glomerulus formation.

During development, the axons of olfactory receptor neurons project to the CNS and converge on glomerular targets. For vertebrate and invertebrate olfactory systems, neuron-glia interactions have been hypothesized to regulate the sorting and targeting of olfactory receptor axons and the development of glomeruli. In the moth Manduca sexta, glial reduction experiments have directly implicated two types of central olfactory glia, the sorting zone- and neuropil-associated glia, in key events in olfactory development, including axon sorting and glomerulus stabilization. By using cocultures containi

Electrophysiological responses of three chemosensory systems in the carp to pesticides.

Responses of three chemical senses, olfaction, taste, and pit organ sense, to three pesticides were studied electrophysiologically in carp, Cyprinus carpio. Only olfaction was responsive to the three pesticides at behavioral avoidance levels, which were determined in a previous study. The olfactory thresholds for benthiocarb, isoprothiolane, and fenitrothion were 1.7 x 10(-1) micrograms/l (4 log units lower concentration than 48-h LC50), 6.7 x 10(-3) micrograms/l (6 log units lower than 48-h LC50), and 4.9 x 10(2) micrograms/l (1 log unit lower than 48-h LC50), respectively. There were two dis

Metal-Organic Framework-Preserved Thermostable Microneedle Patch for Minimally Invasive Detection and Monitoring of Kidney Dysfunction.

Early and decentralized biomarker detection and monitoring is essential for timely diagnosis and intervention, particularly in kidney disorders that often progress asymptomatically until irreversible damage has occurred. Here, we present a thermally resilient metal-organic framework encapsulated microneedle (MOF@MN) sensing platform that integrates minimally invasive dermal interstitial fluid (ISF) sampling and on-needle detection with MOF-based biostabilization of the sensing interface. A thin zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 (ZIF-8) shell is grown in situ on antibody-functionalized microneed

The Role of Inflammation and Immunity in Cardiovascular Disease: Molecular Mechanisms and Therapeutic Targets.

Cardiovascular inflammation is increasingly recognized not merely as a secondary response to hemodynamic or metabolic injury, but as a determinant of disease initiation, progression, and remodeling. In the injured heart and vasculature, danger sensing, inflammatory priming, inflammasome activation, nucleic acid recognition, immunometabolic rewiring, immunothrombosis, adaptive immune remodeling, and defective resolution form interdependent circuits rather than isolated pathways. A key challenge is to understand how these circuits shift from adaptive clearance and repair to persistent immune act

ZnCo2O4‑Based Nanoparticle Sensor for 1‑Pentanol Detection.

When microbial volatile organic compounds (MVOCs) interact with humans, they can be harmful to health, causing irritation and discomfort. Additionally, they act as biomarkers for diseases. Despite the significance of this topic, there are still few detection tests available. This work explores the sensitive detection of MVOCs using semiconductor metal oxide (SMO). Therefore, this study aimed to evaluate the use of the monophase bimetallic structure ZnCo2O4 as a gas-sensing material for 1-pentanol detection, an MVOC that Trichothecium roseum and Staphylococcus aureus can produce. The study focu

Metal-organic framework-derived porous cerium-doped tricobalt tetraoxide dodecahedrons for efficient detection of hydrogen sulfide.

Highly selective detection of toxic hydrogen sulfide (H2S) is crucial, as it is a by-product of many industrial processes. Metal oxide semiconductors (MOSs)-based chemiresistive gas sensors have been extensively utilized in gas detection; nevertheless, developing MOSs with innovative nanostructures is essential to boost their gas-sensing capabilities. Herein, we prepared porous dodecahedral cobalt tetraoxide (Co3O4) with varying cerium (Ce) doping concentrations using metal-organic framework (MOF) templates for H2S sensing. The sensor based on 3 at.% Ce-doped Co3O4 demonstrated optimum H2S-sen

CuO-Modified FePS3 Monolayer: A Two-Dimensional Sensing Material for Room Temperature Capture and Efficient Detection of VOCs.

Although the development of gas sensing materials for room temperature operation is of great importance for environmental management, computational studies usually overlook the effectiveness of the adsorbent under realistic conditions. The FePS3 monolayer has recently been synthesized and recognized as a novel two-dimensional (2D) material with favorable electrical properties, but its potential for gas-sensing applications remains unexplored. In this study, first-principles calculations are employed to systematically investigate the feasibility of pristine and CuO-modified FePS3 monolayers for

Near-IR quantum dot (BagQD) as fluorescent sensor for live-cell imaging and in-vivo antibacterial photocatalytic therapy (APT).

The development of multitasking agents that can sense, as well as damage multidrug-resistant (MDR) bacteria with no growth, is the need of the hour to overcome the increased mortality associated with antibacterial resistance. Toward this end, to overcome the limitation of organic dyes as fluorescence probes, and other developed quantum dots (QD), we present new of its kind near infrared type-I (NIR-I) CdSe/ZnSe/FeTiO3-based perovskite quantum dot, BagQD, for fluorescence-guided selective bacterial imaging-sensing and permanent disinfection. BagQD possesses unique photodynamic and photophysical

Inhibitory effect of Lonicera japonica flos on Streptococcus mutans biofilm and mechanism exploration through metabolomic and transcriptomic analyses.

INTRODUCTION: Streptococcus mutans was the primary pathogenic organism responsible for dental caries. Lonicera japonica flos (LJF) is a traditional herb in Asia and Europe and consumed as a tea beverage for thousands of years. METHODS: The inhibitory effect and mechanism of LJF on biofilm formation by S. mutans was investigated. The active extracts of LJF were validated for their inhibitory activity by examining changes in surface properties such as adherence, hydrophobicity, auto-aggregation abilities, and exopolysaccharides (EPS) production, including water-soluble glucan and water-insolubl

A Metal-Organic Framework-Based Colorimetric Sensor Array for Transcutaneous CO2 Monitoring via Lensless Imaging.

Transcutaneous carbon dioxide (TcPCO2) monitoring provides a non-invasive alternative to measuring arterial carbon dioxide (PaCO2), making it valuable for various applications, such as sleep diagnostics and neonatal care. However, traditional transcutaneous monitors are bulky, expensive, and pose risks such as skin burns. To address these limitations, we have introduced a compact, cost-effective CMOS imager-based sensor for TcPCO2 detection by utilizing colorimetric reactions with metal-organic framework (MOF)-based nano-hybrid materials. The sensor, with a colorimetric sensing array fabricate

Multifunctional Three-in-One Sensor on t-ZnO for Ultraviolet and VOC Sensing for Bioengineering Applications.

Zinc oxide (ZnO) is considered to be one of the most explored and reliable sensing materials for UV detection due to its excellent properties, like a wide band gap and high exciton energy. Our current study on a photodetector based on tetrapodal ZnO (t-ZnO) reported an extremely high UV response of ~9200 for 394 nm UV illumination at 25 °C. The t-ZnO network structure and morphology were investigated using XRD and SEM. The sensor showed a UV/visible ratio of ~12 at 25 °C for 394 nm UV illumination and 443 nm visible illumination. By increasing the temperature, monotonic decreases in response a

Water-Soluble Triazolium Covalent Cages for ATP Sensing.

Water-soluble organic cages are attractive targets for their molecular recognition and sensing features of biologically relevant molecules. Here, we have successfully designed and synthesized a pair of water-soluble cationic cages employing click reaction as the fundamental step followed by the N-methylation of the triazole rings. The rigid and shape-persistent 3D hydrophobic cavity, positively charged surface, H-bonding triazolium rings, and excellent water solubility empower both cages to exhibit a superior affinity and selectivity for binding with adenosine-5'-triphosphate (ATP) compared to
