A cross sectional pilot study utilising STrain Analysis and Mapping of the Plantar Surface (STAMPS) to measure plantar load characteristics within a healthy population.

BACKGROUND: No in-shoe systems, measuring both components of plantar load (plantar pressure and shear stress) are available for use in patients with diabetes. The STAMPS (STrain Analysis and Mapping of the Plantar Surface) system utilises digital image correlation (DIC) to determine the strain sustained by a deformable insole, providing a more complete understanding of plantar shear load at the foot-surface interface. RESEARCH QUESTIONS: What is the normal range and pattern of strain at the foot-surface interface within a healthy population as measured by the STAMPS system? Is STAMPS a valid

Pandemic Operating Room Supply Shortage and Surgical Site Infection: Considerations as We Emerge from the Coronavirus Disease 2019 Pandemic.

BACKGROUND: The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic created shortages of operating room (OR) supplies, forcing healthcare systems to make concessions regarding "standard" OR attire. At our institution, we were required to reduce shoe covers, reuse face masks, and allow washable head coverings. We determined if these changes affected surgical site infection (SSI) rates. STUDY DESIGN: A single institutional study was performed to compare the SSI rates reported to the National Healthcare Safety Network in the 2 years preceding COVID-19 (PRE, January 1, 2018, to December 31, 2020) with t

Shod landing provides enhanced energy dissipation at the knee joint relative to barefoot landing from different heights.

Athletic shoes can directly provide shock absorption at the foot due to its cushioning properties, however it remains unclear how these shoes may affect the level of energy dissipation contributed by the knee joint. This study sought to investigate biomechanical differences, in terms of knee kinematics, kinetics and energetics, between barefoot and shod landing from different heights. Twelve healthy male recreational athletes were recruited and instructed to perform double-leg landing from 0.3-m and 0.6-m heights in barefoot and shod conditions. The shoe model tested was Brooks Maximus II. Mar…

Mirror Foot: Surgical Approach for Esthetic and Functional Improvement.

Mirror foot is a rare congenital anomaly on to the spectrum of complex foot polydactyly. It may occur in isolation or associated with other malformations or genetic syndromes. This is a subject little described in the literature, with few publications on its treatment. We herein report the case of a 4-year-old female patient who presented with a left foot with 8 fingers, without other associated deformities, whose complaints included the impossibility of wearing shoes and social stigma. Radiographically, eight metatarsi with their respective phalanges, five cuneiform bones, and absence of bone…

Effects of Latin style professional dance on the spinal posture and pelvic tilt.

BACKGROUND: Systematic repetition postures adopted during trainings could generate alterations in the sagittal spinal curvatures. OBJECTIVE: The purposes were: 1) to analyse the sagittal spinal curvatures and pelvic tilt in Latin American style dancers; 2) to compare the spinal sagittal mobility and hamstring muscle extensibility between Latin American style dancers and non-dancers; and 3) to evaluate the influence of wearing dance shoes upon the sagittal spine posture in standing. METHODS: A total of 20 Latin American style professional dancers and 20 non-dancers (control group) were evalua…

Presentation, Diagnosis, and Nonsurgical Treatment Options of the Anterior Tibial Tendon, Posterior Tibial Tendon, Peroneals, and Achilles.

Disorders of the anterior tibial tendon (ATT) are rare, and relatively few series have been described in the literature. Ruptures of the ATT are more common than tendinopathies of the ATT. For those patients with a tendinopathy, initial treatment may include activity and shoe-wear modifications.

Identifying Safe Alternatives for Contact Allergy Patients.

Allergen avoidance is the most effective treatment of contact allergy. Patient improvement ultimately relies on identification of safe alternative products, which can be used by the patient. Safe personal care product options typically can be found using ingredient database programs. Avoidance of allergens in other products (eg, shoes, clothing, and dental care) often is challenging. This article discusses specific safe alternatives for the 80 allergens on the 2017 American Contact Dermatitis Society core allergen series.

Complete duplication of an accessory first ray.

A case report of an accessory metatarsal located between the first and second metatarsals is presented. This rudimentary accessory ray caused a splay foot deformity that made it difficult for the patient to walk comfortably in shoes. In reviewing the literature, there has been very little reported on the complete duplication of a metatarsal, as described by Venn-Watson. The authors will discuss the proper treatment of, and review the classifications associated with, this deformity.

What's New in Severe Deformity Correction: The German Perspective.

Foot deformities are found in several neurologic conditions, most typically, but not exclusively, Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease. Posttraumatic deformities and undercorrection or overcorrection of congenital talipes equinovarus are also encountered. A severely deformed foot that cannot fit into normal shoes presents a significant day-to-day challenge to the young and active patient. This article presents some basic principles for evaluating the deformity and a toolkit of procedures to deal with these complex cases.

Chronic tophaceous gout in a patient with a history of allopurinol toxicity.

We present an unusual complication of chronic tophaceous gout in a 63-year-old man with a 27-year history of gout, who could not be treated with allopurinol due to previous allopurinol-induced neutropenia. The patient presented with a progressively enlarging, painful mass on the bottom of his right foot, which caused difficulty wearing shoes and walking. Extirpation of the tophus and first metatarsophalangeal joint arthroplasty were successfully employed for management of this condition.

Osteochondral lesions of the proximal phalanx of the great toe: a report of two cases.

Two cases of osteochondral lesions of the proximal phalanx of the great toe at the interphalangeal joint are presented. This condition is characterized by pain, swelling, and tenderness at the interphalangeal joint. The roentgenographic characteristics resemble osteochondritis dissecans. Curettage and bone grafting to the lesion is effective. These conditions in adolescent soccer players may be caused by chronic repetitive overloading of the interphalangeal joint using soccer shoes with soft, supple, and narrow toe boxes.

Rheumatoid nodules affecting both heels with surgical debulking: a case report*.

The presence of subcutaneous nodules in association with rheumatoid arthritis is well documented. In most cases, these nodules occur in association with severe rheumatoid disease. Treatment should be initiated with conservative measures such as custom-molded shoes, nonweightbearing, and oral antibiotic therapy to control infection. The goals of surgery were to alleviate pain, improve function and cosmesis, remove infected bone, and prevent further infection. The surgical sites are completely healed without complications 2 years postoperatively.

Talectomy for arthrogryposis multiplex congenita.

Eighteen patients (34 feet) with arthrogryposis multiplex congenita treated by talectomy for rigid equinovarus deformity were reviewed. The average follow-up was 11 years. Twenty-four feet (71%) were considered satisfactory; the remainder were improved. Seven feet required further operations to correct recurrence of the deformity, but finally all could be fitted with boots or shoes and all patients could walk. The history of talectomy is reviewed and the operative details described.

An office-based orthotic system in treatment of the arthritic foot.

Patients with inflammatory arthritic disease of the feet invariably require conservative office management. The simplest method of obtaining relief has been to use commercially available extra-depth shoes combined with custommade, removable, closed-celled polyethylene foam arch supports. These supports are soft, light, and can be accurately adjusted to each patient's pathology. The technique and modifications used for relieving the commonest problems, such as anterior metatarsalgia and plantar heel pain, are discussed.

[Limb salvage by excision of calcaneus in diabetic atherosclerotic gangrene].

We treated a 49-year-old female patient, who developed diabetic, arteriosclerotic gangrene. Only after the extensive wet gangrene extended to the proximal half sole, she was finally consenting to surgery, and a femoropopliteal Dacron bypass graft was performed. The area of the osteomyelitic calcaneus was removed by necrectomy (slough cutting) but the calcaneus fractured spontaneously after two weeks. Therefore the calcaneus was excised and the half-sole defect was covered by the available skin of the posterior heel and forefoot region. The wound required meticulous local treatment for two mont

[Increasing incidence of knee ligament injuries in alpine skiing: epidemiology and etiopathogenetic hypotheses].

20 to 25% of all the injuries are due to traumas of the knee since forty years. The amount of serious sprains has been in constant increasing during the last four decades. The ratio of one to two in 1960 between and ankle injuries was of six to one in 1987. The inversion of this ratio is probably due to the evolution of technics from 1960 forth, to plastic shoes with thicker soles, to the wrong adjustment of binding and to the higher speed of the skiers thanks to better mending of tracks. The frequency of injury of ligamental structures is higher for the internal lateral ligament and for the a…

A new skate allowing powerful plantar flexions improves performance.

To prevent the tip of the blade from scratching through the ice, the technique in speed skating requires that plantar flexion is largely suppressed during the gliding push off. This not only prevents the plantar flexors from contributing to external work but also causes the skater to lose contact with the ice long before the knee is fully extended. To prevent these disadvantages of the gliding technique, a new skate was developed that permits the shoe to rotate relative to the blade in a hinge between shoe and blade. In a case control study the progression between the 1993/1994 and 1994/1995 s
