BACKGROUND: In recent years, the increasing popularity of cycling for commuting and leisure has led to a corresponding increase in bicycle-related injuries. However, there is a lack of extensive analysis of bicycle-related injuries to the upper limb in the literature.
METHODS: A retrospective review of all patients with conventional bicycle-related injuries of the upper limb was performed. Data on demographics, mechanisms of injury, region of injury, fracture type, management type, and length of hospital stay were extracted and analyzed.
RESULTS: A total of 177 of 733(24%) patients with bicy

Rotator cuff injuries in the pediatric and adolescent population are rare. These injuries are normally caused by an acute event or by repeated microtrauma as a result of poor mechanics during overhead sporting activities. Overall, these injuries account for fewer than 1% of all rotator cuff tears. Physeal injuries, tuberosity avulsions ("rotator cuff equivalents"), and proximal humeral fractures commonly occur in the pediatric population. Traumatic full-thickness rotator cuff ruptures that occur in this age group during contact sports are an extremely uncommon cause of shoulder pain. The rarit

Brachial plexus injuries sustained at birth have most often been attributed to the maneuvers performed when attempting to relieve a shoulder dystocia or to deliver a breech vaginally. In the case now reported, the brachial plexus injury involved the posterior shoulder. As the delivery was spontaneous and without forceps or manual rotation, with delivery effected using only the McRobert's maneuver, it is hypothesized that maternal expulsive forces in conjunction with lodging of the posterior shoulder on the sacral promontory resulted in the injury.

Bony lesions of the glenoid and Hill-Sachs lesions are the most common injuries after a first-time traumatic shoulder dislocation. However, fracture of the coracoid process after traumatic shoulder dislocation is rare. A single, open surgical procedure could be performed by a Latarjet procedure using a fractured fragment of the coracoid process. If a fracture of the coracoid process is associated with a traumatic anterior shoulder dislocation, the Latarjet procedure may be the most appropriate surgical option.

PURPOSE: Weight lifting is now a standard part of training in most sports. An increasing number of amateur athletes are doing strength training, mostly in unsupervised situations. A series of injuries in amateur weight lifters was analyzed by bone scintigraphy, with the aim of depicting specific patterns that would accurately identify the primary lesions.
METHODS: Twelve patients (10 men and 2 women) were studied whose ages ranged from 18 to 35 years. Patients were referred for bone scintigraphy with clinical diagnoses based on history, physical examination, and appropriate radiologic investi

With the number of musculoskeletal disorders increasing in the workplace, the potential exists for multiple injuries due to compensations. T … ut increased the twisting velocity--specifically when lifting from the asymmetric shelves. Knee and shoulder injuries had limited impact on the trunk motions. Overall, the results indicate workplace design must take into account non-lower back injuries.

INTRODUCTION: Proximal humerus Salter-Harris type II fractures combined with ipsilateral shoulder dislocation in children are extremely rare injuries. Therefore, the best prescribed treatment has not yet been established.
CASE PRESENTATION: A case of a 3-year-old boy who sustained an epiphyseal separation of the right proximal humerus (Salter-Harris type II) and an ipsilateral anterior dislocation of the glenohumeral joint following a road traffic accident. Closed reduction of both injuries under the C-arm intensifier failed. Open reduction was performed through an anterior deltopectoral appr

The shoulder is an area that can be prone to a variety of injuries, including subscapularis tendon tears. The subscapularis muscle is one of the four muscles that make up the rotator cuff in the shoulder and plays an essential role in stabilizing the shoulder joint while at the same time facilitating internal rotation of the humerus. Injuries to the subscapularis can occur due to trauma, overuse, or degeneration, leading to pain, weakness, and limited mobility. When injury occurs, subscapularis tendon tears are often difficult to diagnose and evaluate due to their location deep within the shou

An intrathoracic shoulder dislocation is a rare injury, usually the result of high-energy trauma [Hawkes et al. in Am J Orthop 43(4):E74-E78, 2014; Tsai et al. in Ann Thorac Cardiovasc Surg 20:592-594, 2014, in Rupprecht et al. Bull Emerg Trauma 5(3):212-214, 2017; Abellan et al. J Orthop Surg (Hong Kong)18(2):254-257, 2010]. It often occurs in conjunction with thoracic, pelvic, and long bone injuries. In addition, there is often significant injuries to the shoulder girdle and chest wall associated with neurovascular compromise [Abellan et al. J Orthop Surg (Hong Kong)18(2):254-257, 2010; Lin

The inherently unstable anatomy of glenohumeral (GH) joint predisposes it to shoulder dislocation. Shoulder dislocation can occur either due to acute trauma or due to chronic microtraumas in the setting of underlying morphological abnormality. A plain radiograph is the initial imaging modality for diagnosis and management of shoulder dislocation and its associated osseous abnormalities such as Hill-Sachs deformity or osseous Bankart lesion. However, advanced imaging techniques such as multidetector CT (MDCT) with three-dimensional (3D) volume rendering and MRI can be helpful in further charact

BACKGROUND: Various warm-up exercises have been developed to improve baseball pitching performance and prevent throwing injuries. Although their effectiveness has been evaluated, their underlying mechanisms remain unclear. These mechanisms require elucidation to help develop more effective warm-up exercises for pitchers from different backgrounds. Many clinicians and team staff focus on optimal warm-up of the glenohumeral joint, which is a common site for throwing injuries; thus, it is important to expand the knowledge regarding developing the optimal warm-up.
PURPOSE/HYPOTHESIS: The purpose

The shoulder is affected by numerous pathological conditions related to the high speeds and intra-articular stresses during the throwing movement. The most common are SLAP lesions and internal impingement. The treatment is preventive and conservative initially, starting in athletes at a young age and continuing throughout their entire sports career. It includes posterior capsule stretching, strengthening of the external rotators and scapular stabilizers, correcting any scapular dyskinesia and optimizing the static and dynamic balance of the thorax, pelvis and legs. Surgical treatment is consid

The long head of biceps tendon (LHBT) is a well-recognized cause of anterior shoulder pain. Tenotomy or tenodesis of the LHBT is an effective surgical solution for relieving pain arising from the LHBT. Cosmetic deformity of the arm, cramping or soreness in the biceps muscle, and strength deficits in elbow flexion and supination are the three most common adverse events associated with tenotomy of the LHBT. Complications associated with tenodesis of the LHBT include loss of fixation resulting in cosmetic deformity, residual groove pain, pain or soreness in the biceps muscle, infection, stiffness
