Ageing to arrhythmias: conundrums of connections in the ageing heart.

The proportion of the population that is elderly continues to increase, leading to an increasing need to address problems chiefly associated with old age. Progressive ageing of the heart is associated with an increasing incidence of arrhythmias and disorders of the normal origin of the heartbeat, the sinoatrial node. This intrinsic pacemaker of the heart has an increasing tendency with age to lose its dominant role in pacing the heart, and regulation of heart rate becomes erratic. This 'sick sinus syndrome' is associated with fainting, palpitations, shortness of breath and sudden death. Curren

Trajectories of sickness absence in healthcare workers: a cohort study in a Spanish hospital between 2018 and 2023.

BACKGROUND: Sickness absence (SA) is a key indicator of health and job performance. The COVID-19 pandemic increased workload and stress, potentially affecting healthcare workers' (HCWs) health and retention. This study aimed at identifying vulnerable HCW groups by analysing SA trajectories before and after the pandemic. METHODS: A retrospective longitudinal study was conducted using administrative data from HCWs at Hospital del Mar, Barcelona, Spain, 2018-2023. SA was measured as cumulative days per semester. Latent Class Growth Analysis with zero-inflated Poisson models identified SA traject

Return-to-work support program outcomes for people on leave due to mood and stress-related disorders.

BACKGROUND: Mood disorders and stress-related disorders are the two leading causes of long-term employee absenteeism and cause significant social losses. Therefore, strengthening the support systems is essential to help employees return to work. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to investigate the outcomes of a return to work (RTW) rehabilitation program and to explore factors associated with RTW and continued employment. METHODS: A five-times-a-week RTW intervention was implemented for three to four months for people on leave who had been diagnosed with a mood or stress-related disorder. RTW rate

Labour market attachment dynamics in patients with concussion: a Danish nationwide register-based cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Concussion may lead to persisting post-concussive symptoms affecting work ability and employment. This study examined the transitions between labour market states an individual can experience after the acute phase of concussion. The aim was to describe the incidence of favourable and adverse transitions between different labour market states (e.g., employment, sick leave) in relation to socioeconomic and health characteristics in individuals with concussion relative to matched controls. METHODS: This Danish nationwide register-based cohort study extracted 18-60-year-old individual…

Self-reported sickness absence and presenteeism as predictors of future disability pension: Cohort study with 11-year register follow-up.

Many healthcare workers in eldercare are pushed out of the labor market before the official retirement age due to poor health. Identification of early warnings signs is important to avoid complete loss of work ability. The aim of this study was to investigate to what degree sickness absence and presenteeism increase future risk for disability pension among eldercare workers. A total of 8952 Danish female eldercare workers responded to a survey about work environment and health. They were followed for 11 years in the Danish Register for Evaluation of Marginalization, with time-to-event analyses

Two-Year Follow-Up of a Randomized Clinical Trial of Inpatient Multimodal Occupational Rehabilitation Vs Outpatient Acceptance and Commitment Therapy for Sick Listed Workers with Musculoskeletal or Common Mental Disorders.

Purpose There is a lack of results on long-term effects of return to work interventions. We previously reported that an inpatient multimodal occupational rehabilitation program (I-MORE) was more effective in reducing sickness absence and facilitating return to work (RTW) at 12 months follow-up compared to an outpatient program that consisted mainly of Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (O-ACT). We now report the 2-year outcome data. Methods A randomized clinical trial with parallel groups.
