We depict the case of an 80-year-old female patient who presented to us with a history of protruding mass per anum. Sigmoidoscopy revealed a large globular pedunculated polyp at 22 cm from the anal verge resulting in a sigmoidorectal intussusception. Endoscopic polypectomy was not technically possible due to the large size of the polyp. At the time of prolapse the polyp was tied at its pedicle with thread and resected surgically. The patient is asymptomatic on follow-up.

We describe the case of a patient who presented with stercoral perforation of the sigmoid colon in association with hypercalcaemia caused by a parathyroid adenoma. Colonic resection was followed by successful parathyroidectomy and resulted in a satisfactory outcome. This unusual association is discussed.

Endometriosis as a cause for pelvic pain is quite common in women of child-bearing age. A 70-year-old man with a history of hereditary hemorrhagic telangiectasis was found to have occult blood in his stool after a routine physical examination. Endoscopic evaluation revealed a small, sessile tumor that was consistent with well-differentiated adenocarcinoma of the sigmoid colon on histologic examination.

Coloscopy was accurate in 83% of patients referred because of a radiological suspicion of malignancy in a diverticula-bearing sigmoid colon. In 17% the sigmoid could not be reached or inspected because of deformity or stenosis. All 13 coexisting carcinomas were correctly diagnosed endoscopically except for one which could not be reached. Coloscopy is therefore a valuable adjunct in detecting or eliminating cancer in colonic diverticular disease.

BACKGROUND Coexistence of carcinoid tumor and colorectal adenocarcinoma is rare. In this report, we present two cases and review the current literature for synchronous carcinoid tumor and colorectal carcinoma occurrence. CASE REPORT In both cases, the rectal carcinoid tumors and sigmoid colon adenocarcinomas were detected by colonoscopy. The colon adenocarcinomas were effectively treated with a laparoscopic sigmoidectomy and the carcinoids were successfully removed endoscopically. A 74-year-old female patient underwent a simultaneous colectomy and hepatectomy for sigmoid colon cancer and its hepatic metastases. Six months later she underwent a hepatectomy for recurrent hepatic metastases; then 10 months later, a pulmonary resection for pulmonary metastasis; and 24 months later, a partial gastrectomy for gastric metastasis. As of December 2005, at 7 years 6 months after the first surgery and at 4 years after the last surgery, the patient is still alive with a good quality of life and no sign of recurrence.

Generally the peritoneal dissemination of digestive cancer was difficult to control. The symptom of dissemination will decrease quality of life (QOL) for these patients. We report herein an unusual case of metachronous triple cancers of the sigmoid colon, stomach, and esophagus. Low to moderate doses of therapeutic irradiation are capable of producing bizarre cytologic changes in the mucosal cells of colorectal crypts. This may be associated with eosinophilia of the lamina propria and with eosinophilic crypt abscesses. The bizarre cells generally line intact crypts and do not exhibit invasive behavior. The change subsides within 1-2 months at the dose levels studied (approximately 2000 rads).
