OSA pediatric subjects suffer from episodes of upper airway obstruction that can be partial or complete, with atypical sleep patterns and blood-gas level alteration. If poor treated and/or diagnosed, it can cause cardiovascular disease, learning difficulties, behavioural issues, and retardation of growth. In the literature, there are conflicting evidence about OSA assessment and treatment in pediatric age, so the aim of this paper is to highlight the multidisciplinary approach in the management of sleep disorders, stressing the role of the pediatric dentist in both diagnosing and treating the

Children with Down syndrome (DS) are at high risk for developing obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) compared to children without DS. The negative impact of OSA on health, behavior, and cognitive development in children with DS highlights the importance of timely and effective treatment. Due to the higher prevalence of craniofacial and airway abnormalities, obesity, and hypotonia in patients with DS, residual OSA can still occur after exhausting first-line options. While treatment commonly includes adenotonsillectomy (AT) and continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) therapy, additional therapy suc

Background: Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is prevalent in pregnancy and it is associated with adverse pregnancy-related outcomes such as gestational diabetes, pre-eclampsia, and low birth weight. Maternal systemic inflammation is proposed to be one of the main intermediate mechanisms. However, the effects of OSA on systemic inflammation are unknown in normal pregnancy. Methods: Women in the 3rd trimester underwent hospital polysomnography to evaluate whether OSA increases systemic inflammation in normal pregnancy and its potential association with adverse fetal outcomes. OSA was defined as an

Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is a disease process involving recurrent pharyngeal collapse during sleep, resulting in apneic episodes. Clinically, symptoms can include snoring, sudden awakening with a choking-like sensation, excessive somnolence, non-restorative sleep, difficulty in starting or maintaining sleep, and fatigue. It results in impaired gas exchange, subsequently causing various cardiovascular, metabolic, and neurocognitive pathologies. Historically, OSA has been underdiagnosed and undertreated, especially in women. OSA is associated with WHO (World Health Organization) class III p

The objective was to determine if a screening tool for obstructive sleep apnea could be used to predict adverse perinatal outcomes. This was a prospective observational study of patients receiving prenatal care and universally screened for obstructive sleep apnea with the STOP Questionnaire (four questions related to Snoring, Tiredness during daytime, Observed apnea, and high blood Pressure). Confounding variables were included in a backwards logistic regression model to predict adverse perinatal outcomes. The study population of 442 women had positive STOP screens (64; 14.5%) associated with

OBJECTIVES: Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is linked to many health comorbidities. We aimed to ascertain if OSA correlates with a rise in poor obstetrical outcomes.
METHODS: Employing the United States' Healthcare Cost and Utilization Project - National Inpatient Sample, we performed our retrospective cohort study including all women who delivered between 2006 and 2015. ICD-9 codes were used to characterize women as having a diagnosis of OSA. Temporal trends in pregnancies with OSA were studied, baseline features were evaluated among gravidities in the presence and absence of OSA, and multivar

BACKGROUND: Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is associated with increased cardiac arrhythmia and sudden cardiac death. We recently developed a new method (neuECG) to noninvasively measure electrocardiogram and skin sympathetic nerve activity (SKNA).
OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to test the hypothesis that SKNA measured during sleep study is higher in patients with OSA than in those without OSA.
METHODS: We prospectively recorded neuECG and polysomnography in 26 patients undergoing a sleep study. Sleep stages were scored into rapid eye movement (REM), and non-REM sleep stages 1 (N1),

Madelung's disease is a rare condition characterized by diffuse, multiple, symmetric, nonencapsulated fatty accumulation predominantly in the neck and upper trunk, which can predispose to obstructive sleep apnea. This case report involves a 51-year-old man affected by Madelung's disease who complained of difficulty breathing and inability to sleep in a supine position. An overnight pulse oximetry was performed, and the result was suggestive of moderate to severe obstructive sleep apnea. After auto-titrating continuous positive airway pressure therapy, the patient was prescribed continuous posi

Sleep apnea has 2 variants that are classified by their etiologic mechanism, namely, an obstructive or a central origin. Despite the clinical and scientific advancements in obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) over the past 20 years, a majority of affected patients remain undiagnosed. This article reviews aspects of unmanaged OSA, including the oral and maxillofacial signs and symptoms, systemic risk factors, diagnostic criteria, guidelines for patient referral to a sleep physician, and clinical management techniques. Additionally, the role of dentists in oral appliance therapy is explored.

INTRODUCTION: Obstructive sleep apnea is characterized by a reduced airflow through the upper airways during sleep. Two forms of obstructive sleep apnea are described: the central form and the obstructive form. The obstructive form is related to many factors, such as the craniofacial morphology.
OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the correlation between the morphology of the cranial base, of the mandible and the maxilla, and obstructive sleep apnea severity.
METHODS: Eighty-four patients, mean age of 50.4 years old; 73 males and 11 females with obstructive sleep apnea were enrolled in the present study.

Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) has been reported to be a cause of hypertension in 40-80% of hypertensive patients. However, there are limited data available on the prevalence and predictors of OSA in young hypertensive patients. This study was conducted between October 2017 and October 2018. The inclusion criteria were (1) age over 18 and under 35 years (2) diagnosis with hypertension and (3) available respiratory polysomnography results. Patients with other causes of secondary hypertension were excluded. Predictors for OSA were analyzed using multivariate logistic regression analysis. There we

Tracheal displacement is thought to be the primary mechanism by which changes in lung volume influence upper airway patency. Caudal tracheal displacement during inspiration may help preserve the integrity of the upper airway in response to increasing negative airway pressure by stretching and stiffening pharyngeal tissues. However, tracheal displacement has not been previously quantified in obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). Accordingly, we aimed to measure tracheal displacements in awake individuals with and without OSA. The upper head and neck of 34 participants [apnea-hypopnea index (AHI) = 2-7
