BACKGROUND: Descemet's Stripping with Automated Endothelial Keratoplasty (DSAEK) is constantly gaining popularity in the management of endothelial dysfunctions such as bullous keratopathy or Fuchs' dystrophy.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 36 year-old man with Fuchs' dystrophy underwent combined phacoemulsification and DSAEK of the right eye. Immediately postoperatively, corneal graft displacement and peripheral corneal edema which remained stable during the first postoperative month were evident on slit lamp examination. Three months after the procedure the peripheral edema had completely resolved and…

Colletotrichum dematium has been rarely reported from India before. The present case, a farmer, developed peripheral corneal ulcer five days following trauma with plant. At presentation his visual acuity was 6/60 (unaided) and 6/24P with pinhole. Slit lamp and fluorescent stain examination revealed paracentral corneal ulcer with irregular margins, stromal infiltration and multiple epithelial defects. Microbiological examination of corneal samples confirmed the initial diagnosis of fungal corneal ulcer and the fungus was identified as C.dematium. Patient was treated with topical natamycin and c…

PURPOSE: To investigate the relationship between eye color and cataract.
METHODS: A population-based cross-sectional study (N = 3654) was conducted near Sydney, Australia. Lens photographs were graded for cortical, nuclear, and posterior subcapsular cataract. Iris color was assessed at slit-lamp examination by comparison with four photographic standards.
RESULTS: Eyes with dark brown irises were more likely to have nuclear (adjusted odds ratio, 1.59; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.03 to 2.28) or posterior subcapsular cataract (adjusted odds ratio, 2.50; 95% CI, 1.57 to 3.98) than eyes with

Seventeen patients with cystic fibrosis and 17 age-, race-, and sex-matched controls were examined under standardized conditions. Testing included slit-lamp biomicroscopy, fluorescein staining, rose bengal staining, Schirmer's basic tear test, tear film break-up time, tear pH, tear lysozyme, tear protein, lid and conjunctival cultures, and conjunctival impression cytology. Cystic fibrosis patients showed a statistically significant increase in the incidence of fluorescein staining and clinical blepharitis, as well as significantly decreased Schirmer testing and tear lysozyme. Ocular surface ab

Of 30 consecutive patients with ocular adnexal basal cell carcinoma, 18 (60%) had at least one additional unsuspected foci of basal cell carcinoma. The patients most likely to have additional basal cell skin cancer were women, those with previous basal cell carcinoma, and those whose eyelid lesions were recurrent, located at the medial canthus, or of the sclerosing cell type. Using a slit lamp helped us to identify suspicious lesions on the face, but we often required the assistance of a dermatologist to diagnose sclerosing lesions. Comprehensive treatment of basal cell carcinomas should inclu…

Fungal keratitis is still a relatively rare but very serious ophthalmological condition with a potentially vision-threatening course, possibly including even loss of the eye. Similar to acanthamoeba keratitis, it is often initially misdiagnosed at the slit lamp. For more than 20 years an increase in the incidence of fungal keratitis has been observed, also in Germany, possibly due to the increased use of soft contact lenses and climate change. This article provides an overview of the typical clinical signs and symptoms of keratomycosis and presents the latest findings in the field of diagnosti…

The article presents a clinical case of a functioning hyaloid artery in a 69-year-old patient. The results of OCT-angiography made it possible to detect the presence of blood flow in the projection of the persistent hyaloid artery (PHA) on the cross-section and en-face images. The vascular bed of PHA spreading along the posterior surface of the lens in the form of separate branches was visualized by slit-lamp biomicroscopy. The uniqueness of this clinical case lies in the low probability of such findings in the elderly. The presence of a developing cataract indicates the need for an individual

A 42-year-old woman presented with chronic history of left red eye for more than 12 months, treated with difference topical medication but without response. Ocular external examination demonstrated a firm palpable mass in the medial portion of the lower eyelid and slit-lamp evaluation of the lesion showed an ulcerated conjunctival nodule, keratin secretor. CT of the orbits revealed left-sided orbital mass located anteriorly, inferiorly and medially in the orbit, adjacent to the globe and orbit walls. Incisional biopsy of the lesion was consistent with invasive squamous cell carcinoma of the co

A 54-year-old Indian male with a diagnosis of ocular hypertension was started on a prostaglandin analog (PGA) in both eyes to lower intraocular pressure. Six years later, he developed progressively increasing bilateral limbal conjunctival hyperpigmentation. Travoprost was discontinued and replaced with brinzolamide and over the next year, the patient's conjunctival pigmentation improved significantly in both the eyes. This case report documents with slit-lamp photography the first case of conjunctival pigmentation associated with PGA use that has been shown to have reversal with discontinuatio

Renal Fanconi syndrome is diagnosed by its cardinal features of glycosuria without diabetes, aminoaciduria, phosphaturia, and renal tubular acidosis. It is often associated with hypokalaemia, hypophosphatemia and rickets. We report a seven-year-old boy with nephropathic cystinosis who presented with all the cardinal features of renal Fanconi syndrome associated with rickets, pathological fractures, stage IV chronic kidney disease (CKD) and hypothyroidism. Slit-lamp examination of the cornea confirmed the diagnosis. However glycosuria was conspicuously absent. Whenever there are features of ric

Phthiriasis palpebrarum is an uncommon cause of blepharoconjunctivitis in which Pthirus pubis infest the eyelashes. We report a case of unilateral phthiriasis palpebrarum with crab louse. A 45-year-old man presented with conjunctival hyperaemia and moderate itching associated with irritation, and crusty excretions of the eyelashes in the left eye. Careful slit-lamp examination revealed many lice and nits in left eye and mild conjunctival hyperaemia. No abnormality was found in the right eye. On dermatologic examination, only one louse was found at the pubic area. The patient was treated effect

Ocular myiasis in humans is a rare phenomenon. Here two cases are reported who came to a tertiary care centre with features of unilateral acute catarrhal conjunctivitis. Fly larvae were detected on slit lamp examination and removed after immobilising it with topical 4% lignocaine. Topical antibiotics and steroid drops were prescribed for 2 weeks. The samples were identified as Oestrous ovis by the entomology department of the Institute of Tropical Medicine, Kolkata. The signs and symptoms regressed within 48 hours. The cases are being reported to create awareness among the ophthalmologists reg…

The clinical, surgical and light microscopical features of a mesectodermal leiomyoma of the ciliary body are presented. Slit-lamp examination of a 63-year old woman strongly suggested a malignant lesion of the ciliary body and the peripheral choroid. Following cryoretinopexy and argonlaser-photocoagulation, the tumor and the adjacent portion of the cornea, angle structures, iris, ciliary body, choroid and sclera were removed en bloc. The defect was covered by a corneosclerotransplant 14 mm in diameter. Histological examination revealed a well circumscribed tumor of the ciliary body, consisting

Lesions of the afferent, intercalated, efferent (parasympathetic), and cervical sympathetic arms of the pupillary pathway each tend to produce rather distinctive clinical signs. Sophisticated equipment generally is not needed to define the probable basis for anisocoria and/or disordered pupillary function. Diagnosis of the more common anomalies of the pupil usually can be made from observations obtained using only a penlight, occluder, slit lamp biomicroscope, and a few diagnostic pharmaceutical agents. This paper has been written as a guide to recognition of pupillary signs and as an aid to t…
