As part of our evaluation of MRP-1/CD9 and KAI1/CD82 as prognostic predictors among patients with cancer, we have extended our studies to solid tumors of a variety of anatomical sites. Normal tissues were included for comparison. Immunohistochemical techniques were used throughout. Our results indicate that MRP-1/CD9 was strongly expressed by many normal tissues, including the epithelium of the gastrointestinal tract, alveolar epithelium of the lung, urothelium and smooth muscle. Solitary fibrous tumor (SFT) is an uncommon mesenchymal neoplasm that usually arises in the pleura. Although this tumor has been described in other sites, including the head and neck area, in the oropharynx it is extremely rare. We report the first case of a SFT arising from the palatine tonsil of a 62-year-old man.
