The association of physical and mental health with sexual activity in older adults in a retirement community.

INTRODUCTION: Understanding sexual behavior is important when evaluating the health needs of older adults. Little research has addressed the effect of specific health conditions on sexual inactivity in this growing population. AIM: The study aims to assess the association of mental and physical health conditions with sexual inactivity among adults 55 and older living in The Villages, Florida. METHODS: Exposure data for 22 self-reported health conditions were assessed in relation to sexual inactivity in 22,654 participants ages 55 and older, including 1,879 participants over age 80 in a commu

Animal Models of the Impact of Social Stress on Cocaine Use Disorders.

Cocaine use disorders are strongly influenced by the social conditions prior, during, and after exposure to cocaine. In this chapter, we discuss how social factors such as early life stress, social rank stress, and environmental stress impact vulnerability and resilience to cocaine. The discussion of each animal model begins with a brief review of examples from the human literature, which provide the psychosocial background these models attempt to capture. We then discuss preclinical findings from use of each model, with emphasis on how social factors influence cocaine-related behaviors and ho…

Behind the 'Social mask': a phenomenological study of loneliness and social disconnection in women with Eating disorders.

Eating disorders (EDs) are chronic psychiatric conditions characterized by significant impairments in psychosocial functioning. This study utilizes an interpretative phenomenological analysis (IPA) to explore the lived experiences of social functioning and loneliness among women diagnosed with Eating Disorders (n = 8). Semi-structured interviews focused on early interpersonal patterns, experiences of social interactions, and the role of social support in recovery. Four superordinate themes emerged: Roots of Impaired Social Functioning, highlighting adverse childhood experiences; The Worsening

The Social Phobia Inventory: validity and reliability in an adolescent community sample.

Social anxiety disorder and social anxiety are highly prevalent psychological conditions in youth. Because of the known risks associated with the spectrum of social anxiety in youth, early detection with valid and reliable assessment measures is imperative. Self-report measures have become the most widely used method of assessment for child and adolescent social anxiety. Because research to date on self-report measures of social anxiety disorder in adolescents is limited, the primary objective of the present study was to contribute to the literature by examining the validity and reliability of

Attention training toward and away from threat in social phobia: effects on subjective, behavioral, and physiological measures of anxiety.

Social phobics exhibit an attentional bias for threat in probe detection and probe discrimination paradigms. Attention training programs, in which probes always replace nonthreatening cues, reduce attentional bias for threat and self-reported social anxiety. However, researchers have seldom included behavioral measures of anxiety reduction, and have never taken physiological measures of anxiety reduction. In the present study, we trained individuals with generalized social phobia (n = 57) to attend to threat cues (attend to threat), to attend to positive cues (attend to positive), or to altern

The effects of social evaluation and looming threat on self-attentional biases and social anxiety.

This paper examines how two proposed cognitive vulnerabilities of social anxiety, the fear of negative evaluation, and looming cognitive style may combine with socially demanding situations in predicting social anxiety symptoms and performance deficits. Fifty-two individuals previously identified as possessing these two cognitive vulnerabilities were randomly assigned to conditions in a 2 (high versus low social evaluation)x2 (high versus low temporal looming) experimental design. Significant interaction effects were found for: (a) residual change in anxiety symptoms from baseline level, and (

Situations of Vulnerability, Life Satisfaction, and Social Support of Older Women and Men: Results From the Canadian Longitudinal Study on Aging (CLSA).

Situations of vulnerability are associated with reduced life satisfaction. Although social support moderates the influence of situations of vulnerability, little is known about their associations. This study aimed to document situations of vulnerability and examine their association with life satisfaction among older adults, and the moderating effect of social support. Secondary analyses of cross-sectional data (n = 21,491; 73.4 ± 0.04) from the Canadian Longitudinal Study on Aging, stratified by sex. Confirmatory factor analysis identified a vulnerability variable from physiological, psycholo

The technical-reasoning network is recruited when people observe others make or teach how to make tools: An fMRI study.

Cumulative technological culture is defined as the increase in efficiency and complexity of tools over generations. The role of social cognitive skills in cultural transmission has been long acknowledged. However, recent accounts emphasized the importance of non-social cognitive skills during the social transmission of technical content with a focus on technical reasoning. Here, we contribute to this double process approach by reporting an fMRI study about the neurocognitive origins of social learning. Participants watched videos depicting tool-making episodes in three social-learning conditio

Grasping Social Apathy: The Role of Reach-To-Grasp Action Kinematics for the Assessment of Social Apathy in Mild Neurocognitive Disorders.

BACKGROUND: Social apathy, a reduction in initiative in proposing or engaging in social activities or interactions, is common in mild neurocognitive disorders (MND). Current apathy assessment relies on self-reports or clinical scales, but growing attention is devoted to defining more objective, measurable and non-invasive apathy proxies. OBJECTIVE: In the present study we investigated the interest of recording action kinematics in a social reach-to-grasp task for the assessment of social apathy. METHODS: Thirty participants took part in the study: 11 healthy controls (HC; 6 females, mean age

Genetic Suppression of mTOR Rescues Synaptic and Social Behavioral Abnormalities in a Mouse Model of Pten Haploinsufficiency.

Heterozygous mutations in PTEN, which encodes a negative regulator of the mTOR and β-catenin signaling pathways, cause macrocephaly/autism syndrome. However, the neurobiological substrates of the core symptoms of this syndrome are poorly understood. Here, we investigate the relationship between cerebral cortical overgrowth and social behavior deficits in conditional Pten heterozygous female mice (Pten cHet) using Emx1-Cre, which is expressed in cortical pyramidal neurons and a subset of glia. We found that conditional heterozygous mutation of Ctnnb1 (encoding β-catenin) suppresses Pten cHet co

Morphological changes in the basolateral amygdala and behavioral disruptions associated with social isolation.

Social isolation and the disruption of established social bonds contribute to several physical and psychological health issues. Animal models are a useful tool for investigating consequences of social stress, including social isolation. The current study examined morphological changes in the basolateral amygdala (BLA) and affect-related behavioral and endocrine changes due to prolonged social isolation, using the translational prairie vole model (Microtus ochrogaster). Adult male prairie voles were either socially paired (control) or isolated from a same-sex sibling for 4 weeks. Following this

Feasibility, acceptability, and outcomes: A pilot trial of the enhancing social function in older veterans with PTSD (ESVP) group intervention.

Poor social function is associated with negative health outcomes and premature mortality in older veterans with posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). This pilot randomized trial evaluated a nine-session group-based intervention (Enhancing Social Function for Older Veterans with PTSD [ESVP]) to enhance social function in older veterans with PTSD compared with a support group condition. Participants were 36 U.S. military veterans aged 60 years or older who had experienced military-related trauma and endorsed symptoms of PTSD. Feasibility, acceptability, and changes in social function were assess

Nursing students' perceptions of substance abusers: The effect of social status on stigma.

The stigma associated with drug addiction in the U.S. has been found to be a deterrent for individuals seeking treatment (SAMHSA, 2013). This experimental vignette study examined substance abuse stigma toward a hypothetical heroin addict ("John") in a sample of 62 nursing students who were given different occupational information about John to manipulate their perceptions of his social status. Each study participant read one of three vignettes in which John was portrayed as high-status (mayor of a large city), low-status (restaurant table busser), or unspecified status (no occupational informa

A breath of Twitter.

The use of online social networks among physicians and physicians-in-training is similar to that of the general population. Patients also use online social networks to communicate and exchange information with other patients who have similar conditions and with health professionals, something which is not free from ethical problems. In any case, online social networks have penetrated clinical practice irreversibly. Twitter is an effective social communication tool used for many different purposes. It has been massively adopted in many sectors including healthcare. The article explores its usef

No effect of online cyberball social exclusion on interval estimation of action-outcome events.

Recent work suggests that feelings of social exclusion can attenuate feelings of agency, as indexed by temporal binding. However, existing evidence relies on heterogeneous manipulations of social exclusion and different operationalizations of temporal binding, raising questions about the generality of these effects. Across two pre-registered experiments, we examined whether the first-hand experience of social exclusion influences temporal binding as measured by the interval estimation task. Social exclusion and inclusion were manipulated using a within-subjects Cyberball paradigm administered

Social Influence and Problematic Drinking: Insights from the COVID-19 Pandemic.

Patterns of alcohol consumption can spread from one person to the next in social networks. Yet the necessary conditions required for this social influence to occur are not clearly defined. Here we leverage the sudden and seismic shift in social life following COVID-19, a natural phenomenon that divorced social relationships from the contexts those relationships typically inhabit. Using a social network-based clustered longitudinal design, we examined alcohol use patterns among cohorts of heavy drinking friendship dyads and triads (N=314) traced longitudinally pre- and post-pandemic. In line wi

Early Trauma Leaves No Social Signature in Sanctuary-Housed Chimpanzees (Pan troglodytes).

Negative early experiences can have detrimental effects on social functioning in later life, both in humans as well as in other socially-living animals. In zoo-housed chimpanzees, recent evidence suggests that there may be a lingering signature of early trauma on individuals' social interaction tendencies as measured by social proximity and grooming. Here, we address whether a similar effect would be observable in chimpanzees living under semi-wild conditions in an African sanctuary. By analysing party size, close proximity and social grooming, we show that in this specific sanctuary, chimpanz

Whether, how, and when social anxiety shapes positive experiences and events: a self-regulatory framework and treatment implications.

Although neglected in diagnostic criteria lists, theoretical models, and treatment approaches, attenuated positive emotions and cognitions distinguish social anxiety and social anxiety disorder from other anxiety conditions (and cannot be accounted for by comorbidity with depression). We present a self-control resource depletion model to explain how the intense self-regulatory efforts of high socially anxious individuals dampen positive experiences and events. We review existing research on individuals with social anxiety difficulties, focusing on impoverished positive experiences and quality

Social phobia: an analysis of possible developmental factors.

Sixty-eight individuals with specific or generalized social phobia and 25 normal controls were assessed for presence of a family history of anxiety, childhood shyness, traumatic conditioning experiences, neuroticism, and extraversion. Subtype differences emerged, including significantly greater neuroticism and a more frequent history of shyness in the generalized subtype. Those with the generalized subtype also had significantly lower extraversion scores, and those with the specific subtype had a significantly higher frequency of traumatic conditioning episodes. Together, traumatic conditionin
