Achieving pregnancy safely for HIV-serodiscordant couples: a social ecological approach.

The recognition and fulfilment of the sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR) of all individuals and couples affected by HIV, including HIV-serodiscordant couples, requires intervention strategies aimed at achieving safe and healthy pregnancies and preventing undesired pregnancies. Reducing risk of horizontal and vertical transmission and addressing HIV-related infertility are key components of such interventions. In this commentary, we present challenges and opportunities for achieving safe pregnancies for serodiscordant couples through a social ecological lens. At the individual lev

Face processing in autism: Reduced integration of cross-feature dynamics.

Characteristic problems with social interaction have prompted considerable interest in the face processing of individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). Studies suggest that reduced integration of information from disparate facial regions likely contributes to difficulties recognizing static faces in this population. Recent work also indicates that observers with ASD have problems using patterns of facial motion to judge identity and gender, and may be less able to derive global motion percepts. These findings raise the possibility that feature integration deficits also impact the percep

Applying convergent parallel mixed methods design to investigate medication adherence among people living with HIV in resource-limited settings: methodological insights from Ghana.

BACKGROUND: Suboptimal adherence to antiretroviral therapy (ART) remains a critical challenge in achieving viral suppression among people living with HIV in resource-limited settings. This study demonstrates the application of convergent parallel mixed methods design to investigate adherence barriers among patients who experienced at least one missed clinic appointment but successfully re-engaged in care. METHODS: We employed a convergent parallel mixed methods design combining quantitative survey data from 288 participants with seven-day pill count adherence measurements across 36 healthcare

Clinical and functional effects of the COVID-19 pandemic and social distancing on vulnerable veterans with psychosis or recent homelessness.

The COVID-19 pandemic has upended the lives of everyone in the United States, negatively impacting social interactions, work, and living situations, and potentially exacerbating mental health issues in vulnerable individuals. Within the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) healthcare system, two vulnerable groups include those with a psychotic disorder (PSY) and those who have recently experienced homelessness (recently housed Veterans, RHV). We conducted phone interviews with PSY (n = 81), RHV (n = 76) and control Veterans (CTL, n = 74) between mid-May - mid-August 2020 ("initial") and between

The Social Context and Illness Identity in Youth with Type 1 Diabetes: A Three-Wave Longitudinal Study.

Youth with type 1 diabetes are confronted with the challenging task of integrating diabetes into their identity. This integration process, referred to as illness identity, may play an important role in how youth with type 1 diabetes cope with normative and illness-specific challenges. In line with socio-ecological theorizing, the present study investigated the longitudinal interplay between illness identity and two important social contexts for youth, the parent and peer contexts. A total of 559 (54.5% female; mean age = 18.8 years) adolescents (14-17 years) and emerging adults (18-25 years) w

Correlates of persistent postconcussional disorder: DSM-IV criteria versus ICD-10.

Controversy surrounding the causation of symptom complaints after mild traumatic brain injury (MTBI) is reflected by the existence of alternative diagnostic criteria for postconcussional syndrome (PCS) in the International Classification of Diseases (ICD) and postconcussional disorder (PCD) in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders-4th edition (DSM-IV). Previous studies of persisting symptoms have employed various symptom checklists rather than uniform criteria-based diagnoses. This is the first prospective study of persisting symptom complaints using the formal diagnostic c

Comprehensive approach to reintegration of disability benefit recipients with multiple problems (CARm) into the labour market: results of a randomized controlled trial.

PURPOSE: Although most clients on work disability benefits face multiple problems, most traditional interventions for (re)integration focus on a single problem. METHODS: This study is a stratified, two-armed, non-blinded randomized controlled trial (RCT), with a 12-month follow-up period. Outcome measures were:
