BACKGROUND: Social functioning deficits occur prior to the onset of psychosis and predict conversion to psychosis in clinical high-risk (CHR) populations. The Social Functioning Scale (SFS), a self-report measure of social functioning, is widely used in adults with psychosis but has not been tailored to CHR individuals. CHR syndromes overlap with the adolescent/young-adult developmental period, a time with unique social demands and contexts. The current study evaluates a modified version of the SFS in CHR individuals.
METHODS: Two independent samples of CHR participants (n = 84 and n = 45) an

OBJECTIVE: The Great East Japan Earthquake and tsunami affected approximately 53 000 people in the city of Ishinomaki, Miyagi Prefecture. Approximately 30 000 people were relocated to temporary/rental housing. The remainder re-inhabited tsunami-affected houses, and their conditions were not known. As social isolation could affect physical and psychological health, we investigated the risk of social isolation among the survivors who returned to their homes.
METHODS: The surveyors went door-to-door to the tsunami-affected houses and interviewed each household between October 2011 and March 2012

Social relationships, including dominance status, are powerful regulators of mental health, and social experiences impact the continued expression of these behaviors. However, very little is known about the neuronal mechanisms that regulate the positive reinforcing effects of aggression that underlie social dominance, including potential sex differences. To address this gap, we used viral-mediated gene expression in Syrian hamsters to investigate how nucleus accumbens neurons regulate behavioral adaptations caused by aggression and other social interactions in both males and females. We found …

Identifying someone else's noncooperative intentions can prevent exploitation in social interactions. Hence, the inference of another person's mental state might be most pronounced in order to improve social decision-making. Here, we tested the hypothesis that brain regions associated with Theory of Mind (ToM), particularly the right temporo-parietal junction (rTPJ), show higher neural responses when interacting with a selfish person and that the rTPJ-activity as well as cooperative tendencies will change over time. We used functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) and a modified prisoner's…

Cognitive models emphasize that patients with social anxiety disorder (SAD) are mainly characterized by biased perception of their social performance. In addition, there is a growing body of evidence showing that SAD patients suffer from actual deficits in social interaction. To unravel what characterizes SAD patients the most, underestimation of social performance (defined as the discrepancy between self-perceived and observer-perceived social performance), or actual (observer-perceived) social performance, 48 patients with SAD and 27 normal control participants were observed during a speech …

OBJECTIVE: The COVID-19 outbreak and associated physical distancing measures altered the social world for most older adults, but people who live alone may have been disproportionately affected. The current study examined how living alone was associated with daily social contact and emotional well-being among older adults during the pandemic.
METHOD: Adults (N = 226) aged 69+ completed a brief survey assessing their living situation, social contact with different social partners (in person, by phone, electronically), and emotions during the morning, afternoon, and evening the prior day.

With the proliferation of social media and digital platforms, dialects are increasingly moving beyond traditional oral contexts into networked writing and digital interaction spaces. Compared to standard languages such as Mandarin, dialectal expressions on social media typically carry stronger emotional valence, interactivity, and regionally specific cultural features. However, existing research has mostly addressed digital dialect phenomena from sociolinguistic or cultural semiotic perspectives, and systematic empirical analyses of how users experientially perceive dialectal expressions and h

BACKGROUND: Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is characterized by repetitive behaviors, deficits in communication, and overall impaired social interaction. Of all the integrin subunit mutations, mutations in integrin β3 (Itgb3) may be the most closely associated with ASD. Integrin β3 is required for normal structural plasticity of dendrites and synapses specifically in excitatory cortical and hippocampal circuitry. However, the behavioral consequences of Itgb3 function in the forebrain have not been assessed. We tested the hypothesis that behaviors that are typically abnormal in ASD-such as self-…

Social phobia is classified as an anxiety disorder in psychiatric nomenclature. It represents a fear of performance or social interaction that significantly interferes with a person's social or occupational functioning. The author takes issue with the fact that social phobia is considered by many professionals to be a mental illness that is often treated best with medication. Social phobia can be conceptualized from a social work perspective as an extreme shyness that can be overcome with cognitive learning and behavioral rehearsal. This article reviews the biopsychosocial causes of social pho…

Although affective irritability is a common and concerning problem for autistic youth, limited research has examined relations among core autism characteristics and irritability. Therefore, this study investigated potential associations among types of restricted/repetitive behaviors (RRBs) and social communication challenges and irritability in autistic children and adolescents. Participants were 107 autistic youth recruited from a university-based autism clinical research program. Two hierarchical multiple regressions were conducted with Affective Reactivity Index as the dependent variable. C

BACKGROUND: Social anxiety often manifests through behaviors such as reduced gaze to the eyes and lower speech volume. While these markers have been examined in face-to-face interactions, large-scale assessments remain challenging. Social virtual reality (VR) offers a promising alternative by enabling naturalistic interactions in which behavior can be captured at scale, but it remains unclear if people show naturalistic behavior in such artificial environments.
OBJECTIVE: We examined whether behavioral and physiological markers associated with social anxiety in real-life interactions similarl

The Covid-19 pandemic exposed individuals to intense restrictions and social isolation, as well as the possibility of deterioration of physical health. In the pandemic period, the Internet has become the principal avenue for social interaction, leisure related activities, and school-work pursuits for most people and consequently problematic Internet use (PIU) has increased dramatically in this period. Modeling of PIU among university students - considered one of the most negatively affected groups at this time - along with PIU subconstructs as well as indicators of psychological well-being - l…

OBJECTIVE: The present study examined how social ecosystems affect health behaviors among African American women during middle to older adulthood. Specifically, this study compared the effects of social support from friends, social support from family, and neighborhood social life on accelerometry-assessed moderate to vigorous physical activity (MVPA) across 24-months and whether effects were moderated by age among African American women (> 40 years).
METHOD: Data were analyzed from a sub-set of African American women (N = 213, Age = 58.97 ± 11.26, Body Mass Index = 32.8 ± 8.1) enrolled in th

Both high-functioning autism (HFA) and social phobia (SP) involve profound social interaction deficits. Although these disorders share some similar symptoms, they are conceptualized as distinct. Because both HFA and SP are defined behaviorally, the degree of overlap between the two disorders may result in misinterpretation of symptoms. However, the deficits in each disorder differ, particularly in areas of social interaction, emotion recognition and expression, and communication. This paper reviews the literature that informs our current understanding of the behavioral overlaps and differences…

OBJECTIVES: Providing care for older adults can limit informal caregivers' time for social engagement, potentially affecting their mental health. This study examines how missing social activities, and particularly those perceived as important, are associated with depressive symptoms among informal caregivers.
METHODS: We used data from the 2022 National Study of Caregiving linked with the 2022 National Health and Aging Trends Study to analyze the relationship between missed social activities and depressive symptoms. The interaction of gender and independent variable is used to examine the mod

The present investigation examined the interactive effects of subjective social status and rumination in relation to anxiety/depressive symptoms and psychopathology among 276 Latinos (82% female; Mage = 39.2, SD = 11.1; 97.0% reported Spanish as first language) who attended a community-based primary health care clinic. Results indicated that the interaction between rumination and subjective social status was significantly associated with depression (B = -.04, t = -3.52, p < .001, 95% CI [-.06, -.02]), social anxiety (B = -.01, t = -3.84, p < .001, 95% CI [-.02, -.01]), and the number of mood a

This study examined whether social isolation and living alone were independently associated with cardiovascular mortality and whether living alone modified the association between social isolation and cardiovascular mortality in community-dwelling older adults.
STUDY DESIGN: Community-dwelling older adults residing in Itabashi Ward, Tokyo, who participated in the postal survey, were enrolled. Social isolation was defined based on the fre…

How is mindreading affected by social context? It is often implicitly assumed that there is one single way to understand others, whatever the situation or the identity of the person. In contrast, I emphasize the duality of functions of mindreading depending on the context (social interaction and social observation), as well as the duality of social frames of reference (egocentric and allocentric). I argue in favour of a functional distinction between knowledge-oriented mindreading and interaction-oriented mindreading. They both aim at understanding other people's behaviour. But they do so usin…
