Life history analysis of HIV/AIDS-affected households in rice and cassava-based farming communities in Northern Malawi.

The "New Variant Famine" hypothesis proposed that AIDS offers a major challenge to food security in this part of Africa by impairing the functioning of traditional support systems, leading to the collapse of "social immunity". This study explores the changing perceptions of HIV and AIDS and peoples' responses to its impact by eliciting life history narratives of 30 respondents in Northern Malawi. We classified respondents by means of gender, livelihood systems and AIDS impact levels. Respondents reported a range of critical events, recorded in the life histories, that threatened their "social

Depressed mood and other variables related to bone marrow transplantation survival in acute leukemia.

Routine psychiatric evaluations of 100 adult patients undergoing allogeneic bone marrow transplantation for acute leukemia were reviewed to examine the possible relationship of psychiatric and psychosocial factors to duration of survival following the procedure. Three variables were found to independently affect outcome: illness status (first remission vs. other status), presence of depressed mood, and the extent of perceived social support. Patients transplanted while in their first remission had significantly improved survival; patients with depressed mood, regardless of specific psychiatric

Congenital cytomegalovirus infection: predisposing maternal factors.

In a prospective study of cytomegalovirus (CMV) infection in pregnancy 69 congenitally infected infants were identified. The age, race, marital status, social class, and parity of the mothers of congenital CMV infants were compared with those of the screened population of women with non-infected infants. These factors were all individually strongly associated with the prevalence of congenital CMV. However, once age, marital status, and race were accounted for, neither social class nor parity had any additional effect. The overall congenital CMV rate was 3 per 1000 livebirths, ranging from 25/1

Retrospective report of social withdrawal during adolescence and current maladjustment in young adulthood: cross-cultural comparisons between Australian and South Korean students.

The current study investigated associations between the frequency of and motivations for social withdrawal during adolescence and emotional distress in young adulthood. Perceived motivations for social withdrawal included unsociability, isolation, shyness, and low mood. Social withdrawal during adolescence was assessed using a retrospective questionnaire completed by Australian and Korean university students. They also completed measures of general self-worth, social relationships, loneliness, social anxiety, and depression at university. Partial correlations and path analyses revealed that di

Social support networks and primary care use by HIV-infected drug users.

HIV-infected current and former drug users utilize primary care and preventive health services at suboptimal rates, but little is known about how social support networks are associated with health services use. We investigated the relationship between social support networks and the use of specific types of health services by HIV-infected drug users receiving methadone maintenance. We found that persons with greater social support, in particular more social network members or more network members aware of their HIV status, were more likely to use primary care services. In contrast, social supp

Stigma toward persons with mental illnesses in prison.

PURPOSE: The healthcare provision for mentally ill offenders in Germany remains inadequate, despite higher prevalence rates compared to the general population. We examined whether stigma-based discrimination is greater toward this group compared to individuals with somatic illnesses and/or non-incarcerated individuals. METHODS: In February 2025, we conducted a quota-based online survey among adults living in Germany (aged 18 years or older; n = 1,609), in which respondents were randomly assigned to one of eight case vignettes varying by illness (schizophrenia vs. diabetes), incarceration stat

Why are so many indigenous Pando people dying? Using observations from Chhattisgarh, India, to conduct structural assessment and identify solutions.

Health challenges of communities are often assessed using biomedical or individual risk-based frameworks which are often inadequate for understanding their full extent. We use observations from the global South to demonstrate the usefulness of structural assessment to evaluate a public health problem and spur action. Following newspaper reports of excessive deaths in the marginalised indigenous or Adivasi community of the Pando people in Northern Chhattisgarh in central India, we were asked by the state government's public health authorities to identify root causes of these deaths. In this rap

Resilience, self-efficacy, social support, and quality of life in patients with skin defects of the lower extremity after flap transplantation.

BACKGROUND: Lower extremity trauma is one of the most common emergency presentations. It may cause skin and muscle tissue defects, and in severe cases, it may also be accompanied by bone, tendon, and neurovascular exposure. Pedicled flap transfer is the most important treatment for this type of lower extremity trauma. The purpose of the study is to investigate the relevant factors affecting resilience and provide a theoretical basis of improving resilience in patients after skin flap transplantation. METHODS: In this study, the convenience sampling method was used to conduct a questionnaire s

Association Between Socioeconomic Status and Neuropsychiatric Symptoms in the UK Biobank: The Moderating Role of Sociability.

Introduction: Neuropsychiatric symptoms are signs of cognitive decline and associated disorders. The effects of socioeconomic status and social interaction on cognitive decline have already been well documented. Accordingly, the present study aimed to build on the work investigating those factors and cognitive health by examining the relationships between socioeconomic status, sociability, and neuropsychiatric symptoms. Methods: Data from the UK Biobank (N = 301,848) were subjected to logistic regressions to examine the relationship between socioeconomic status, sociability, and neuropsychiatr

Reducing Europe's cancer and NCD burden through coordinated strategies on health determinants: The Joint Action on Cancer and other NCDs Prevention (JA-PreventNCD).

AIMS: Non-communicable diseases (NCDs), including cancer, cardiovascular diseases, diabetes, and chronic respiratory diseases, are responsible for 74% of deaths worldwide (2019). In Europe, they account for over 91% of deaths and 87% of disability-adjusted life years (DALYs). Mental disorders, also considered NCDs, rank seventh globally in terms of DALYs. These burdens are exacerbated by socioeconomic and educational inequalities that shape the distribution of risk factors and cause preventable disparities in health and mortality. This article presents the new Joint Action on Cancer and other

Exploring Spoken Discourse and Its Neural Correlates in Women With Alzheimer's Disease With Low Levels of Education and Socioeconomic Status.

PURPOSE: Early impairments in spoken discourse abilities have been identified in Alzheimer's disease (AD). However, the impact of AD on spoken discourse and the associated neuroanatomical correlates have mainly been studied in populations with higher levels of education, although preliminary evidence seems to indicate that socioeconomic status (SES) and level of education have an impact on spoken discourse. The purpose of this study was to analyze microstructural variables in spoken discourse in people with AD with low-to-middle SES and low level of education and to study their association wit

Socio-Economic Status Differences in Changing Affordability of Tobacco Products from 2011-2012 to 2018-2019 in India.

INTRODUCTION: We studied the change in affordability of tobacco products, an important determinant of tobacco use, across the different socio-economic status (SES) in India. AIMS AND METHODS: We calculated affordability in the form of relative income price (RIP-cost of tobacco products relative to income) for the years 2011-2012 and 2018-2019 using three different denominators, that is per capita gross domestic product (GDP) and net state domestic product at national and state levels, respectively; monthly per capita consumer expenditure (MPCE); and individual wages. We investigated RIP for c

Toxocariasis as a Rare Parasitic Complication of a Transthoracic Spine Surgery Procedure.

Human toxocariasis is a helminthozoonosis caused by the migration of Toxocara species larvae through an organism. The infection in humans is transmitted either by direct ingestion of the eggs of the parasite, or by consuming undercooked meat infested with Toxocara larvae. This parasitosis can be found worldwide, but there are significant differences in seroprevalence in different areas, depending mainly on hot climate conditions and on low social status. However, the literature estimates of seroprevalence are inconsistent. Infected patients commonly present a range of symptoms, e.g., abdominal…
