Using pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) discourse as a case study, we examine qualitative and multi-method approaches to analyzing health communication on social media platforms. These platforms have become crucial spaces for health promotion and community discourse, particularly on HIV prevention. Our review of 23 PrEP-focused studies that used social media data documents the different strengths of both methodologies. Qualitative analyses were strong at capturing how platform architecture shaped discourse quality: Reddit's forum structure enabled deeper narratives while X's (formerly Twitter) c

The experience of fear is universal and is among the earliest of all forms of psychopathology, if excessively present. To prevent negative developmental outcomes due to early-onset excessive fears in children, it is important to systematically assess these experiences as early as possible. Using the preschool anxiety scale (PAS), we aimed to assess the frequency and structure of anxiety symptoms of 489 preschool-aged children raised in their biological family and 88 raised in foster care (as a high-risk sample) in Germany. While these young children displayed the same types of anxiety most com

The significance of investigating effects of deprivation of social experience in rodents is reviewed in the context of the review by Robbins et al. (1996) in the Journal of Psychopharmacology (10: 39-47). The early development of the paradigm by which rats were reared post-weaning in social isolation is described and compared with other early experience manipulations. The specification of the neural and behavioural phenotype of the isolate is brought up-to-date, focusing on changes in motivation and cognitive function, as well as on contrasting changes in the dopamine and serotonin systems, an

The present study sought to extend findings supporting the psychometric validity of a promising measure of social anxiety (SA) symptoms, the Social Interaction Phobia Scale (SIPS; Carleton et al., 2009). Analyses were conducted using three samples: social anxiety disorder (SAD) patients, generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) patients, and healthy controls. SIPS scores of SAD patients demonstrated internal consistency and construct validity, and the previously demonstrated three-factor structure of the SIPS was replicated. Further, the SIPS total score uniquely predicted SA symptoms, and SIPS scor

While interaction and problem-solving shape cultural structure, as the social tinkering framework suggests, stability and erosion too are possible and equally significant outcomes. Navigation and mushroom foraging illustrate how and why sophisticated systems can persist without formal institutions or writing. Recognising diverse trajectories challenges linear stage models and highlights cultural evolution as context-dependent, adaptive, and often intentionally stable.

The tongue is an important oral structure that affects speech, the position of teeth, periodontal tissue, nutrition, swallowing, nursing, and certain social activities. Ankyloglossia (tongue-tie) limits the range of motion of the tongue, impairing its ability to fulfill its functions. In this article, diagnostic criteria needed to evaluate and treat ankyloglossia are suggested, and a method for classifying ankyloglossia is proposed.

BACKGROUND: Behaviors established during adolescence such as risky sexual behaviors have negative effects on future health and well-being. Extant literature indicated that individual attributes such as peer pressure and substance use have impacts on healthy development of young peoples' sexual behavior. The patterns of relationships (social network structure) and the social network content (members' norm regarding sexual practice) established by adolescents' network on adolescents' risky sexual behaviors are not well investigated.
METHODS: This cross-sectional study assessed the roles of soci

The scope of this paper is to identify and analyze the structure of social representations of health professionals about transsexuality. The theoretical and methodological benchmark used was the structural approach to social representations developed by Jean-Claude Abric. 128 health professionals from 22 health units in the State Health Department of the Federal District of Brasília were interviewed. Data collection consisted of the application of a semi-structured questionnaire based on the technique of free association with the key word "transsexuality." The data were processed using EVOC 20

BACKGROUND: More refined dimensions of social-communication impairment are needed to elucidate the clinical and biological boundaries of autism spectrum disorders (ASD) and other childhood onset psychiatric disorders associated with social difficulties, as well as to facilitate investigations in treatment and long-term outcomes of these disorders.
METHODS: This study was intended to identify separable dimensions of clinician-observed social-communication impairments by examining scores on a widely used autism diagnostic instrument. Participants included verbally fluent children ages 3-13 year

Race and ethnicity are frequently misused in research as biological determinants, reinforcing essentialist assumptions and embedding structural factors into clinical guidelines and tools. Disparities in health outcomes increasingly reflect lived experiences and structural inequities, yet standard analytic approaches have not meaningfully evolved. We introduce demographic conscious analysis (DCA), a methodological framework replacing the use of social demographics as predictor variables. Race/ethnicity is a "social demographic" variable that acts as a proxy for causative variables. The social d

Oxytocin (OT) is a neurohormone that regulates the so-called "social brain" and is mainly studied in adulthood. During postnatal development, the mechanisms by which the OT system structures various behaviors are little studied. Here we present the dynamic process of postnatal development of the OT system as well as the OT functions in the perinatal period that are essential for shaping social behaviors. Specifically, we discuss the role of OT, in the newborn, in integrating and adapting responses to early sensory stimuli and in stimulating suckling activity. Sensory dialogue and suckling are

Adverse social environments play a relevant role in the onset and progression of mood disorders. On the other hand, depression is an independent risk factor for cardiovascular morbidity. This study was aimed at (i) corroborating the validity of a rat model of depression based on a negative social episode followed by social isolation and (ii) verifying its impact on cardiac function and structure. Pair housed, wild-type Groningen rats (Rattus norvegicus) were implanted with radiotransmitters for ECG, temperature and activity recordings. They were either exposed to a social defeat episode follow

Transgender individuals experience complex emotional, social, and psychological challenges shaped by systemic discrimination, social exclusion, and varying degrees of familial acceptance in Türkiye. Despite growing global research, studies addressing these lived experiences within Türkiye's sociocultural context remain limited. This study explored how transgender individuals navigate family relationships, social environments, and available support systems, as well as how they construct resilience and imagine possibilities for social change. Using a descriptive phenomenological approach, semi-s

This article maintains that it is the social context, as much as, and sometimes more than the physical condition, that largely structures and limits the lives of people with albinism. It deals with albinism from a sociological, rather than a medical perspective. Viewed as such the problems experiencing by affected people stem primarily not from their physical differences but from the way others respond to those differences and from the social and physical environments they have to cope with. The article is based on a study of 32 children with albinism from a special school in the Limpopo provi

IMPORTANCE: Artificial intelligence (AI) has the potential to improve patient-centered care, yet several AI health care projects have failed due to public backlash, underscoring the importance of social license (informal public acceptance of AI in health care, grounded in trust and expectation of public benefit). How consumers conceptualize social license remains largely unknown.
OBJECTIVES: To explore social license for AI in health care among consumers and to identify strategies for achieving it.
