OBJECTIVE: This study investigated the role that social support plays in well-being and in coping after a stressful event in a group of non-clinical adolescents. Furthermore, this study aimed at replicating the finding that adolescents who reported sexual abuse reported more symptoms and less adequate coping strategies than adolescents who reported another type of stressful event or no stressful episode.
METHOD: Eight hundred and twenty adolescents between 12 and 18 years of age filled out questionnaires assessing social support (Social Support Questionnaire, Sarason, Shearin, Pierce, & Saras…

Paid work, unpaid work in the home and social support are important elements of the social production of health and illness, though their combined effects on both women and men have only recently become a focus of research. This paper examines their association with the health problems of nurses, presenting data from a survey of a proportional random sample of 2285 male and female nurses registered in the Province of Ontario. The data are first analysed for the full sample and then multiple regression analyses are run separately for male and female Registered Nurses. The demands of paid work (…

Strong social support networks have been associated with positive outcomes for health and well-being throughout the life-cycle. This paper investigates the structural and functional nature of social support networks of 100 injecting drug users (IDUs) in Sydney and the implications for HIV/AIDS services. Using a modified ISEL respondents saw support in terms of its tangibility of people and support, in terms of an appraisal of having friends, and as a self-esteem measure. We found the majority of respondents 'hung around' with other IDUs, lived with other IDUs, and were satisfied with the suppo…

Examined the interrelation of maternal adjustment, mother-child interaction, and child adjustment in 29 families of children with spina bifida and without mental retardation and in 28 families of children without handicaps. A multivariate, ecological model proposed that adjustment of mother and child depends on the adaptiveness of maternal response to the stress of the physical handicap and on the ability of mothers to create an optimal caregiving environment through mother-child interaction. Analyses examining the relationships among maternal social support, maternal psychological adjustment,…

BACKGROUND: Low back pain from degenerative spine disease is the main contributor to years lived with disability globally. Although social support is a multifaceted construct with both health-promoting and potentially deleterious effects on chronic pain, whether perceived social support modifies the pain-disability relationship in lumbar degenerative spine disease remains unclear. We hypothesised that social support level would modify the pain-disability association, with distinct predictor patterns of disability emerging for low- versus high-support patients.
METHODS: In this cross-sectional…

BACKGROUND: Equitable healthcare access is a key aspect of health equity, yet migrants face substantial barriers. In Malaysia, migrant workers encounter structural and socio-economic barriers to healthcare. Acculturation and social support may influence healthcare utilisation, but their interrelated role remains unclear. This study examined associations between acculturation, social support, and healthcare utilisation among Indonesian migrant workers in Malaysia, and whether social support was indirectly associated with the relationship between acculturation and healthcare utilisation.

BACKGROUND: Foster youth placed in congregate care often report more risk and fewer protective factors for mental health compared to foster youth residing in other settings.
OBJECTIVE: This study aims to address a gap in the literature by examining how childhood trauma and perceived social support are associated with depressive symptoms among youth with histories of residential care or group home placement.
PARTICIPANTS AND SETTING: Secondary analysis was employed using data from the "Voyages" study. Foster youth (N = 404) completed a battery of surveys including demographics, placement hist…

OBJECTIVE: In persons with multiple sclerosis (MS), perceived social support (PSS) is linked with better mental health, physical well-being, and quality of life. As MS becomes more prevalent in older adults, research on the effects of MS on cognition remains limited. The present study examined the impact of PSS total and domain scores on processing speed and…

Previous studies have only established a strong association between depression and post-traumatic stress disorder in cancer patients, without clarifying the potential mechanisms underlying this relationship. This study examines the relationship between depression and PTSD(Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder) in cancer patients, focusing on the sequential mediation of hope and perceived social support. A cross-sectional study was conducted at oncology wards in an Anhui tertiary hospital between February-August 2024. The investigation employed four instruments: PTSD checklist-civilian version, self-r…

BACKGROUND: Globally, adolescent mothers are at increased risk for postpartum depression (PPD). In Kenya, 15% of adolescent girls become mothers before the age of 18. While social support can buffer a mother's risk of PPD, there are gaps in knowledge as to whether-and which types-of social support are protective for adolescent mothers in Kenya. Understanding the associations between support and postpartum depression symptoms among adolescent mothers can inform mental health interventions.
METHODS: Cross-sectional data of adolescent mothers ≤ 1 year postpartum (aged 14-19 years old) in an info…
