The Drinking Expectancy Questionnaire for Men who have Sex with Men (DEQ-MSM): a measure of substance-related beliefs.

INTRODUCTION AND AIMS: Alcohol expectancies are associated with drinking behaviour and post-drinking use thoughts, feelings and behaviours. The expectancies held by specific cultural or sub-cultural groups have rarely been investigated. This research maps expectancies specific to gay and other men who have sex with men (MSM) and their relationship with substance use. This study describes the specific development of a measure of such beliefs for alcohol, the Drinking Expectancy Questionnaire for Men who have Sex with Men (DEQ-MSM). DESIGN AND METHODS: Items selected through a focus group and i

Community versus clinic sampling: effect on the familial aggregation of anxiety disorders.

BACKGROUND: Most research on the familial aggregation of mental disorders has been based on probands selected from clinics. Sparse research examines the clustering of psychiatric illnesses among families ascertained from the community. Such ascertainment bias limits the generalizability and may compromise the validity of study findings. The objective of this study was to illustrate differences between familial aggregation on the basis of the source of proband ascertainment in a family study of anxiety disorders. METHODS: Forty anxiety probands were recruited from clinics; 36 anxiety probands

Preliminary Reliability and Validity of the M-CHAT-S, a New Autism Screening Tool for School-Aged Children.

Identifying autism early is critical for ensuring timely access to appropriate educational and clinical supports. Current autism screening practices primarily focus on toddlers; universal practices for identifying the substantial portion of autistic children who arrive at school age without a diagnosis are lacking. This study evaluates the preliminary reliability and validity of the Modified Checklist for Autism in Toddlers-School Age version (M-CHAT-S), a novel screener designed for early school-age children, with separate versions for verbally fluent and minimally verbal children. A total of

Development and validation of the Klinefelter-Associated Neurodevelopmental Difficulties (KAND) Checklist: a three-phase mixed-methods study.

BACKGROUND: Klinefelter syndrome (KS) (47,XXY) is a genetic condition associated with infertility, hormonal imbalances, and a range of neurodevelopmental and psychosocial challenges, including language impairments, executive dysfunction, and difficulties in social functioning. Although these challenges can significantly affect daily life, no uniform terminology or standardized tool currently exists to systematically identify and assess them. Building upon research in tuberous sclerosis complex (TSC) and using the TSC-Associated Neuropsychiatric Disorders (TAND) Checklist as a foundation, this

The group-based law enforcement mistrust scale: psychometric properties of an adapted scale and implications for public health and harm reduction research.

BACKGROUND: Negative encounters with law enforcement-direct and vicarious-fuel mistrust. When considered as part of the 'risk environment' in public health and harm reduction research, law enforcement mistrust may have broad implications. For example, fearing arrest may prevent someone from calling 911 when witnessing an overdose or lead to syringe-sharing and community spread of HIV. For people in the US who identify as Black or African American, these effects may compound, given the ways in which communities of color have been overpoliced. The purpose of this study is to investigate the psyc

Mothers' Experiences of a Women's Health and Empowerment Program for Mothers of a Child with a Disability.

Substantial research identifies mothers of children with a disability as a vulnerable group with compromised health outcomes and restrictions for their own self-care, social, economic and leisure participation. This study investigated perceptions and experiences of mothers following attendance at health education and empowerment workshops (Healthy Mothers Healthy Families). Mixed methods evaluated mothers' experiences. A pragmatic qualitative approach was applied to data analysis of interviews with mothers (N = 19). Four themes emerged: Changes for me; Changes for my family; Wisdom gained; and

New Assessments and Treatments in ASD.

The assessment of autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is complex and remains clinical, despite advances in basic research. In this chapter, we review new and updated clinical tools, such as screening and diagnostic tests, and discuss the DSM-5 criteria introduced in 2013. We provide an algorithm to guide clinical evaluation and referrals. We also review non-behavioral treatments and summarize recent research. Current conventional treatment of ASD in children includes intensive behavioral interventions (known as applied behavioral analysis or ABA), rehabilitative services such as speech therapy, occ

Psychophysiological stress response to the Open TSST VR-Y in a youth sample: A feasibility study.

The Open TSST VR is a freely available virtual reality adaptation of the Trier Social Stress Test (TSST) designed to enable standardized, adaptable, and scalable stress research. However, its feasibility as a stressor has only been validated in adult populations. Here, we present results from a study using the Open TSST VR for Youths (VR-Y), a version adapted to adolescent populations. We compared self-ratings, endocrine, and heart rate responses to the VR-Y stress condition and a placebo TSST (active control condition without social-evaluative threat). A total of 37 individuals aged 13-18 yea

Gender differences in the interactions and inferred causal relationships between risk factors and gaming disorder: a network and structural equation modeling approach.

OBJECTIVE: Gaming Disorder (GD) is linked to severe psychological distress and functional impairment, substantially affecting individuals' daily lives. Current researches have not fully clarified the complex, gender-specific risk factors that contribute to GD development. This study aims to uncover key risk factors, such as negative emotions, childhood trauma, social anxiety, personality traits, and GD symptoms, by utilizing network analysis and structural equation modeling to explore differences between genders. METHODS: An online survey was conducted with 1,073 Chinese participants aged 18

Social support, health literacy and anxiety among pregnant women during coronavirus 2019 pandemic in Thailand.

BACKGROUND: The ongoing coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic continues to have a significant impact. Pregnant women are particularly vulnerable to its effects, which may increase their anxiety levels. This study aims to investigate anxiety levels in pregnant women during the COVID-19 pandemic in Thailand and to identify factors predicting such anxiety. METHODS: The researchers collected data through an online questionnaire from November 2021 to May 2022. The sample included 404 pregnant women. The questionnaire consisted of personal information, health literacy related to COVID-19, so

Novel probiotic treatment of autism spectrum disorder associated social behavioral symptoms in two rodent models.

The prevalence of autism spectrum disorder (ASD) has rapidly increased in the past decades, and several studies report about the escalating use of antibiotics and the consequent disruption of the gastrointestinal microbiome leading to the development of neurobehavioral symptoms resembling to those of ASD. The primary purpose of this study was to investigate whether depletion of the gastrointestinal microbiome via antibiotics treatment could induce ASD-like behavioral symptoms in adulthood. To reliably evaluate that, validated valproic acid (VPA) ASD animal model was introduced. At last, we int

The impact of cancer information overload on negative emotions in newly diagnosed lung cancer patients: the mediating role of fear of progression and the moderating role of social support.

BACKGROUND: The high incidence of negative emotions among lung cancer patients has become a significant challenge to global public health. Newly diagnosed patients may experience cancer information overload (CIO) when exposed to a large amount of uncertain cancer-related information within a short time. However, research on the relationship between CIO and negative emotions, and the roles of Fear of Progression (FoP) and social support, is still lacking. OBJECTIVE: To explore the mediating effect of FoP between CIO and negative emotion in newly diagnosed lung cancer patients, and the moderati

Multiple integrated social stress induces depressive-like behavioral and neural adaptations in female C57BL/6J mice.

Despite women representing most of those affected by major depression, preclinical studies have focused almost exclusively on male subjects, partially due to a lack of ideal animal paradigms. As the persistent need regarding the sex balance of neuroscience research and female-specific pathology of mental disorders surges, the establishment of natural etiology-based and systematically validated animal paradigms for depression with female subjects becomes an urgent scientific problem. This study aims to establish, characterize, and validate a "Multiple Integrated Social Stress (MISS)" model of d

Psychological and Behavioral Adjustment in Patients with Non-Traumatic Lower Limb Amputation and Prosthesis: A Mixed-Method Triangulation Study.

Background: Lower limb amputation (LLA), due to non-traumatic causes such as vascular diseases and diabetes, significantly impacts patients' physical, psychological, and social well-being. While multidisciplinary rehabilitation programs commonly address physical and functional recovery, psychological and subjective experiences related to limb loss remain less explored. Thus, this preliminary study aimed to investigate the psychological and behavioral adaptation processes in patients undergoing rehabilitation following lower limb amputation. Methods: A preliminary observational study with a mix

Interrelations of resilience factors and their incremental impact for mental health: insights from network modeling using a prospective study across seven timepoints.

Resilience can be viewed as trajectory of stable good mental health or the quick recovery of mental health during or after stressor exposure. Resilience factors (RFs) are psychological resources that buffer the potentially negative effects of stress on mental health. A problem of resilience research is the large number of conceptually overlapping RFs complicating their understanding. The current study sheds light on the interrelations of RFs in the face of the COVID-19 pandemic as a use case for major disruptions. The non-preregistered prospective study assessed a sample of 1275 German-speakin

Centring the voices of birth mothers who faced infant removal through the co-production of the MUMS@RISC artwork: an arts-based evaluation of trauma-informed research collaboration and participation.

BACKGROUND: In the UK, newborn babies are a growing group of children entering the care system due to safeguarding concerns. Their mothers often experienced a life course of adversity and trauma, resulting in fractured trust in public services and health and social care professionals. Moreover, pregnant and postnatal women with involvement from child protection agencies are known to have increased risk of perinatal morbidity and mortality. To address the existing evidence gaps around perinatal healthcare and outcomes for this group of women, the MUMS@RISC study was designed, with cyclical invo

Gender and anxiety in Nepal: the role of social support, stressful life events, and structural violence.

INTRODUCTION: Throughout the world, anxiety disorders are 1.5-2 times more prevalent among women than men but the reasons for this gender disparity remain elusive. Despite frequent attribution to cultural roles of men and women, data regarding gendered risk factors in non-Western settings are scant. AIMS: This study evaluated the role of gender as a moderator (effect modifier) of stressful life events (SLEs) and social support on the risk of anxiety in Nepal. A cross-sectional random sampling design was employed to recruit 316 persons in a rural community. The participants completed the Beck

Activity and participation in haemophiliacs: Item response modelling based on international classification of functioning, disability and health.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: There is scant research investigating the user-friendly functional assessment tool conceptualized by the International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health (ICF) among persons with haemophilia (PWH). This study aims to accomplish two goals: (1) quantifying comprehensive functioning measures of haemophilia through Item Response Theory (IRT); (2) discussing patient-centred care based on the Wright map of personal ability and item difficulty. METHODS: A cross-sectional study was carried out in 70 PWH (mean age, 33.09 ± 11.04) via convenience sampling. A

Eye-tracking research in eating disorders: A systematic review.

OBJECTIVE: Those with eating disorders (EDs) show attentional biases to disorder-relevant stimuli, such as food and body shape information. However, attentional bias research in EDs largely relies on reaction time based measures, which are limited in their ability to assess different components and the time course of attention. Eye-tracking paradigms have therefore been utilized to provide greater ecological validity, and directly capture the detailed sequence of processes in perception and attention. While numerous studies have examined eye movements in the mood, anxiety, and psychotic disord
