Phialophora verrucosa and P. americana, two dematiaceous hyphomycetes, are known to cause chromoblastomycosis. Even though most medical mycologists consider P. americana as synonymous with P. verrucosa, others maintain them as two distinct species on the basis that the phialides of P. americana have deeper collarettes than those of P. verrucosa. This investigation aimed to determine the effect of Candida albicans on hyperplastic epithelium. Epithelial hyperplasia was induced in hamster cheek pouches by painting the mucosa with 50% (v/v) turpentine and liquid paraffin (TLP50) for 10 weeks. The pouches were then tied off with sutures after inoculation with C. albicans. Many of the pouches lost their sutures and were histologically normal after periods up to 8 weeks. Trichosporon beigelii was isolated from the anal region in 45 (13%) of 343 Danish homosexual men. T. beigelii was also present on the scrotal skin of six anal carriers who were accessible for re-examination, and white piedra of the genital hair was observed in two cases. Because T. beigelii may cause systemic infections in compromised hosts it may pose a threat to homosexuals infected by HTLVIII/LAV virus.

We report an intracranial epidural abscess caused by Aspergillus fumigatus in an immunocompetent patient. Infection occurred in a 20-year-old man 2 months after a frontal craniotomy following trauma. A case of prosthetic valve endocarditis caused by Cryptococcus neoformans var. neoformans is described. The infection followed closed mitral valvotomy and insertion of a valvular prosthesis. Infection was manifested 2 weeks after the operation. The diagnosis was based on direct demonstration of the yeast with characteristic morphology in clinical material, isolation from an arterial thrombus and detection of cryptococcal antigen in the serum. The patient's infection could not be resolved despite institution of antifungal therapy.

We report the first, as far as we know, Mexican case of meningitis caused by Cryptococcus neoformans var. gattii serotype B associated with AIDS in a female patient. Cryptococcal meningitis was induced in mice using intracerebral injection of Cryptococcus neoformans. Beginning either 3 days before or 1 day after infection, mice were treated with human recombinant granulocyte colony stimulating factor (hGCSF). In high doses hGCSF reduced the brain tissue burden of C. neoformans but had no effect on survival. The effect of hGCSF was dependent on size of the infecting dose and time of administration. The blood supply to the mycetoma lesion and its vasculature were studied in patients with various types of mycetoma using histological, ultrastructural, angiographic and sonographic techniques. The mycetoma lesion proved to be well vascularized. However, certain vascular abnormalities were demonstrated. In histological sections, the small arteries and arterioles showed medial muscular hypertrophy in 83%, intimal fibrosis in 33%, arteritis in 7% and endarteritis obliterans with narrowed lumen in 7% of the patients. No vascular occlusion, ischaemic changes or arteriovenous shunts were observed.

D-proline assimilation and CGB tests were performed on 233 Cryptococcus neoformans isolates from Brazil. The results disclosed a high sensitivity, D-proline 99-13% and CGB 99.57%, for screening of the varieties. D-proline assimilation test revealed two false negative results for 5.1% of 39 strains of var. gattii, and no false positive results were observed in 194 strains of var. neoformans. No false results and only one doubtful result were found on the CGB medium.

Two hundred and seventy-one healthy students and workers and 28 hospitalized tuberculosis patients living in Sichuan Province (southwest People's Republic of China; PRC) were tested with histolyn and tuberculin. The age of the tested subjects ranged from 17 to 22 years among the students, 17 to 38, among the workers and 17 to their 70s among the patients.
