Case Report of a Patient with Different Types of Calcifications in the Head and Neck Region.

The deposition of calcium minerals in soft tissue leads to soft tissue calcification or ossification. Calcifications observed in the head and neck region are usually asymptomatic and are detected by chance during routine radiographic examinations. It is essential to identify and differentially diagnose these calcifications to determine appropriate treatment and identify any underlying systemic diseases that may be responsible. Conventional radiographs and advanced imaging techniques can be utilized to locate the calcifications and evaluate their local relationships with anatomical structures.

Uncommon Finding of a Soft Palate Schwannoma: A Case Report.

Schwannomas are relatively slow-growing benign tumors of the nerve sheath. Approximately 25-40% of schwannomas occur in the head and neck region. However, schwannomas that present in the oral cavity are relatively rare, constituting around 1% of all described cases in the head and neck region. We report a case of a 20-year-old female who was found to have an intraoral palatal schwannoma. The patient presented with a painless swelling located on the right side of the soft palate. Investigations and management were commenced, and a computed tomography (CT) scan with contrast was done, which reve

Embryonal Rhabdomyosarcoma of the Biliary Tree as a Differential in a Paediatric Patient Presenting with Biliary Dilatation: Not Always a Choledochal Cyst.

Rhabdomyosarcoma is a soft tissue malignant musculoskeletal tumour and is the most prevalent soft-tissue sarcoma in the paediatric population. Although, Embryonal RMS of the biliary tree is a rare entity, however, it is the most common cause of paediatric malignant obstructive jaundice. We present a 4-year-old child who had symptoms of obstructive jaundice and palpable liver. The non-contrast magnetic resonance imaging and magnetic resonance cholangiopancreatography (MRCP) features were consistent with choledochal cyst. However, contrast enhanced computed tomography and PET CT images revealed

Subcutaneous Migration of a Broken Dental Needle from the Mandibular Gingiva to the Neck: A Case Report.

A 33G, 12-mm needle broke and entered the soft tissue in a 60-year old man. Panoramic X-ray imaging and cone-beam computed tomography (CT), which we performed a few hours after the breakage, revealed the needle in the soft tissue of the lower right mandibular molar. We immediately made an incision in the buccal gingiva of the lower right mandibular molar under local anesthesia and attempted to remove the needle but could not locate it. Thereafter, we adopted a watch-and-wait approach, as the patient had no subjective symptoms. Nine months later, we confirmed via CT that the needle had migrated

Isolated traumatic optic nerve avulsion in a boy who suffered a horse kick.

We report a case with traumatic avulsion of optic nerve caused by a horse kick in a child that caused loss of vision. Optic nerve avulsion is a rare injury usually associated with maxillofacial structures. Our patient had no light perception in the left eye. The left pupil was dilated and unreactive to light. The left globe was intact. A non-contrast axial computed tomography scan of the orbit demonstrated a widened and altered nerve globe junction with periorbital soft tissue edema. At six month following the injury, subsequent magnetic resonance imaging of the orbit showed that the preseptal

Use of a slit-lamp microscope for treating impacted facial foreign bodies in the emergency department.

Identifying, locating, diagnosing, and treating small foreign bodies (FBs) in soft tissues is a challenge for emergency physicians in the emergency department. Additionally, potential complications owing to the remnant FBs are medico-legally significant. The efficacy of conventional imaging methods such as radiography, computed tomography, and ultrasonography are largely limited in visualizing FBs<2-mm. The slit-lamp microscope, still unfamiliar to some emergency physicians, could be used to facilitate the treatment of FBs impacted in soft tissues. In this paper, we present a case that would h

Advanced clinical usefulness of ultrasonography for diseases in oral and maxillofacial regions.

Various kinds of diseases may be found in the oral and maxillofacial regions and various modalities may be applied for their diagnosis, including intra-oral radiography, panoramic radiography, ultrasonography, computed tomography, magnetic resonance imaging, and nuclear medicine methods such as positron emission tomography. Of these modalities, ultrasound imaging is easy to use for the detection of noninvasive and soft tissue-related diseases. Doppler ultrasound images taken in the B-mode can provide vascular information associated with the morphology of soft tissues. Thus, ultrasound imaging

Distally based anterolateral-thigh (ALT) flap with the aid of multidetector computed tomography.

The applicability of the proximally based pedicled anterolateral thigh (ALT) flap has been well described with good results, but the use of a distally based ALT flap around the knee has not been fairly presented. The case of a male patient with a soft-tissue defect around the knee who underwent skin reconstruction based on an ipsilateral distally based ALT flap is presented. Multidetector-computed tomography (MDCT) was used to study the vessels of the lower extremity, which allowed easy interpretation as it provided anatomical images with three-dimensional anatomy reconstructions. Because of t

A case report of large thymic hyperplasia associated with hyperthyroidism.

A 32-year-old female case of large thymic hyperplasia with hyperthyroidism is reported. A computed tomography (CT) examination disclosed a large mediastinal mass (16 x 11 cm) with a heterogeneous internal structure containing both soft tissue density areas and fat density areas. The mass was histologically diagnosed as thymic lymphoid hyperplasia. The thymic mass enlarged during hyperthyroidism and then regressed markedly after treatment with antithyroid drugs. After the thymic mass decreased by about one third of its maximum volume, the mass stopped regressing and has remained the same size f

Influence of the pelvic bone and gluteal zone over the stress state at the interaction between the prosthetic socket and residual limb for people with transfemoral amputation.

The rehabilitation process for people with lower limb amputation represents a substantial socioeconomic, psychological, and functional challenge. Finite element analysis (FEA) has been increasingly used to investigate residual limb-socket interaction; however, the extent to which additional proximal anatomy, beyond the anatomical structures commonly included in simplified models, is necessary to adequately represent the mechanical response remains unclear. This study aimed to determine whether incorporating additional proximal anatomy, specifically the gluteal soft tissue and pelvic bone, prod

Imaging of the Apert syndrome hand using three-dimensional CT and MRI.

Imaging of the Apert syndrome hand is usually done with plain x-rays. This gives only a limited assessment of the grossly abnormal anatomy. Computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) have the ability to comprehensively demonstrate the spatial arrangement of the bones as well as the anatomy of the soft-tissue structures. This paper demonstrates the use of these two imaging modalities in the complex Apert syndrome hand to improve surgical planning and treatment.

Three-dimensional computed tomography imaging of a frontal skull base fracture.

A 7-year-old boy presented with recurrent meningitis after head trauma. Coronal computed tomography (CT) revealed prolapse of the intracranial soft tissue into the right ethmoidal sinus, leading to the diagnosis of right frontal skull base fracture. Three-dimensional CT with bone windows provided a lifelike image of the fracture lateral to the right olfactory groove. This image was most useful in the preoperative planning of the repair surgery.

Combined computed tomography and dacryocystography for complex lacrimal problems.

Two imaging modalities, computed tomography (CT) and dacryocystography (DCG), were combined to demonstrate the relationships between the lacrimal system and the surrounding soft-tissue structures. In selected cases, such as those involving severe facial trauma, midfacial tumours, significant sinus disease, or previous lacrimal, nasal or sinus surgery, this imaging technique may be useful in better evaluating the anatomy of the lacrimal system and planning a surgical approach.

A study of the sensitivity of biomechanical models of the spine for scoliosis brace design.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: The development of biomechanical models of the torso and the spine opens the door to computational solutions for the design of braces for adolescent idiopathic scoliosis. However, the design of such biomechanical models faces several unknowns, such as the correct identification of relevant mechanical elements, or the required accuracy of model parameters. The objective of this study was to design a methodology for the identification of the aforementioned elements, with the purpose of creating personalized models suited for patient-specific brace design and the definit

Tantalum Oxide Nanoparticles for the Quantitative Contrast-Enhanced Computed Tomography of Ex Vivo Human Cartilage: Assessment of Biochemical Composition and Biomechanics.

Nanoparticle-based contrast agents, when used in concert with imaging modalities such as computed tomography (CT), enhance the visualization of tissues and boundary interfaces. However, the ability to determine the physiological state of the tissue via the quantitative assessment of biochemical or biomechanical properties remains elusive. We report the synthesis and characterization of tantalum oxide (Ta2O5) nanoparticle (NP) contrast agents for rapid, nondestructive, and quantitative contrast-enhanced computed tomography (CECT) to assess both the glycosaminoglycan (GAG) content and the biomec

Robust phase-retrieval-based X-ray tomography for morphological assessment of early hepatic echinococcosis infection in rats.

Propagation-based phase-contrast computed micro-tomography (PPCT) dominates the non-destructive, three-dimensional inner-structure measurement in synchrotron-based biomedical research due to its simple experimental setup. To quantitatively visualize tiny density variations in soft tissues and organs closely related to early pathological morphology, an experimental study of synchrotron-based X-ray PPCT combined with generalized phase and attenuation duality (PAD) phase retrieval was implemented with the hepatic echinococcosis (HE) infection rat model at different stages. We quantitatively analy
