Nanoplastics Induce Transgenerational Impacts on Tomato Growth, Oxidative Stress, and Nutritional Quality.

The presence of nanoplastics in agricultural soils raises concerns about their potential for uptake, accumulation, and toxicity on crops. Here, we investigated the transgenerational effects of polystyrene nanoplastics (PS-NPs) on tomatoes, focusing on the growth, oxidative stress responses, and fruit nutritional quality across parental (F0) and offspring (F1) generations. Exposure to PS-NPs inhibited plant growth and fruit ripening and reduced fruit yield and quality in a dose-dependent manner. Notably, these adverse effects were partially mitigated in the F1 generation, indicating a transgene

Bacteria-phage coevolution drives variation in bacterial wilt disease incidence via resistance-virulence trade-offs.

Bacteria-phage coevolution often results in correlated fitness effects on partner species. Whether coevolutionary changes impact the ecology of the surrounding communities is unclear. Here we link coevolution between the phytopathogenic bacterium Ralstonia pseudosolanacearum and its phage parasites to bacterial wilt disease patterns across four geographically disconnected tomato fields. We find that bacteria and phages are locally adapted between and within fields. Phage infectivity was highest on sympatric bacteria, and bacteria showed greater phage resistance when isolated from healthy than

Procedure for Grafting Cultivated Eggplant Varieties onto Wild Eggplant Species to Confer Resistance Against Ralstonia solanacearum.

Bacterial wilt caused by Ralstonia solanacearum is a major constraint in eggplant production. Grafting susceptible cultivated varieties onto resistant wild eggplant rootstocks enables cultivation under pathogen-infected conditions. Here, we describe a procedure for grafting susceptible cultivated eggplant varieties onto resistant wild eggplant species using wedge grafting to confer resistance against Ralstonia solanacearum. The method involves seedling production, grafting at the 2-3 leaf stage, and postgrafting care, resulting in high graft survival rates. In addition to the wedge grafting pr

Acetic acid mediates pectin structural remodeling to enhance cellulose binding in potato cell wall.

This study investigates how acetic acid pretreatment modifies pectin structure and its interaction mechanism with cellulose to regulate textural integrity of potato slices (Solanum tuberosum L.) during thermal processing. Potato slices were pretreated with distilled water and acetic acid, and changes in firmness, sugar composition and cell wall architecture were evaluated. Chelate soluble pectin was extracted, purified and characterized by galacturonic acid content, monosaccharide composition and UV-vis analysis. Acetic acid treated samples retained higher firmness and mitigated heat induced d…

Lightweight attention enhanced YOLOv11 for accurate multi class detection of brinjal diseases.

The cultivation of brinjal is seriously affected by various pathogens which affect crop yield and quality hence the importance of automated disease detection systems in precision agriculture. The conventional image-based diagnostic methods fail to differentiate between similar diseases classes that look similar and this results in misdiagnosis and poor crop management. This research paper advances to suggest a lightweight deep learning model, IEMA-YOLOv11 (Improved Efficient Multi-Scale Attention-based YOLOv11), to successfully identify and detect Brinjal disease successfully in real-time. Dual-function Aspergillus sulphureoviridis: antibacterial polyketides against Dickeya solani and elicitation of Bacillus subtilis lipopeptides.

The Gram-negative bacterium Dickeya solani causes potato soft rot and blackleg, and effective control measures remain limited. We evaluated the agricultural potential of Aspergillus sulphureoviridis, a recently described and chemically unexplored fungus. Bioactivity-guided molecular networking of extracts that inhibited D. solani led to the isolation of six metabolites: cladobotrin IV (1), two new analogs cladobotrin VII and cladobotrin VIII (2 and 3), and the orsellinic acid-derived metabolites F9775A (4), F9775B (5), and violaceol I (6). Among these, the polyketide F9775B (5) inhibited both

1H NMR based-metabolomic approach to evaluate biocompost application on tomato fruit.

In the context of growing environmental concerns and the urgent need to reduce chemical inputs in agriculture, the adoption of sustainable fertilization practices has become essential. Transitioning to farming systems that minimize or eliminate the use of synthetic fertilizers can enhance soil health, meet consumer demands for safer and higher-quality products and reduce environmental pollution. This study focused on the application of probiotic-enriched compost on tomato crops, aiming to assess its impact on the fruit's metabolomic profile, using proton nuclear magnetic resonance (1H NMR) spe

A genetic program for rapid initiation of axillary meristems at the onset of flowering.

Shoot branching patterns and their diversity arise from variable activities of axillary meristems (AMs). A common feature of flowering plants is delayed AM initiation and growth during the vegetative phase, followed by a sudden and rapid acceleration of apical AM initiation during the reproductive phase. The mechanisms underlying this pronounced developmental shift are poorly understood. During tomato floral transition, the primary shoot meristem (PSM) terminates in a flower after producing two spatially adjacent AMs: one that will generate a flower and the other a vegetative side shoot. In pl

Engineering starch-based matrices: comparative impacts of conventional hydrocolloids versus novel algal biomass on potato purée.

Hydrocolloids are traditionally used to structure starch-based foods, yet demand is rising for sustainable, nutrient-dense matrices with enhanced bioactivity. To the best of our knowledge, this study is among the first to characterize algal fortification effect on potato purée, providing a novel route to develop starch-based foods with enhanced nutritional and functional properties. Light microscopy, colorimetry, texturometry and rheology were performed. Chlorella vulgaris at 3% exhibited the strongest water immobilization (aw = 0.27 ± 0.01), suggesting a possible mechanism of physical cellula

Deciphering underexplored rhizosphere processes: root acquisition of citric acid and its metabolic journey in tomato.

Root-exuded organic acids are crucial in mitigating iron (Fe) and phosphorus (P) deficiencies, and their biosynthesis and secretion require significant metabolic investment. Recent studies have shown that roots can also uptake exudates. We hypothesized that citric acid uptake increases under Fe and P deficiencies, declines over time, and contributes to primary metabolism. We investigated citric acid uptake, translocation, and metabolization in Fe- and P-deficient tomato plants grown hydroponically using 13C-labelling with bulk stable-isotope and compound-specific stable-isotope analysis. Effects of Organic Acids on Phenolic Compounds and Antioxidant Activity During the Processing of Potatoes with Colored Flesh.

Potatoes with colored flesh are increasingly processed in the food industry. However, establishing appropriate production parameters is challenging because anthocyanins and other polyphenols present in potatoes undergo structural transformations during processing. Therefore, this study investigated the effects of five organic acids applied during the production of dehydrated potato grits on the content, profile, and stability of phenolic compounds in the final products manufactured from tubers of the red-fleshed potato cultivar Lily Rose (LR) and the purple-fleshed cultivar Double Fun (DF). A Modified QuEChERS Combined With HPLC-MS/MS for the Determination of Emamectin Benzoate, Spinetoram, and Their Major Metabolites in Eggplant Field Samples.

To control thrips in eggplant cultivation, a new pesticide formulation (9% emamectin benzoate·spinetoram microemulsion) is under registration in China. However, the residues of emamectin benzoate (EMB), spinetoram, and prime metabolites of spinetoram in eggplant remained unclear. In this study, field trials were performed in accordance with good agricultural practice across eight provinces of China. The pesticide formulation was sprayed once at 13.5 g a.i./ha, and the recommended pre-harvest interval was 7 days. For the simultaneous determination of EMB, spinetoram, and its metabolites in eggp

Influence of rootstock-scion combinations on morpho-physiological responses, yield, and fruit quality of tomato under hydroponic salinity stress.

BACKGROUND: A hydroponic study was conducted to evaluate whether grafting with some hybrid tomato rootstock could enhance tolerance to salinity of some local tomato scion genotypes and verify morpho-physiological, and biochemical reactions stimulated by rootstocks under salinity. Plants were tested at control (1.5 dS m- 1), medium (4 dS m- 1) and high (8 dS m- 1) salt stress levels by implementing an aerated Deep-Water Culture technique in a fully automated climate chamber. Three scion genotypes (Iraq 1, Iraq 2, and Karahidir) were grafted onto two rootstock genotypes (Ege 50 and ATS06) to eva

A Novel Plant Secondary Metabolite-Binding Gene Family Required for Full Virulence in Pectobacterium parvum.

Pectobacterium parvum is an emerging phytopathogen causing aerial stem rot of potato. P. parvum has a broad host range, with Chinese cabbage as one of its important hosts. Through multi-omics analysis, we discovered a previously uncharacterized gene family highly expressed during in planta infection, designated the plant secondary metabolite-binding (PSMB) family. This family likely originated via horizontal gene transfer and underwent lineage-specific expansion in P. parvum, forming a four-paralog pathogenicity island. Structural modelling revealed that PSMB proteins resemble the rhizobial Rh

TDD-YOLO: A novel model for precise detection of tomato diseases.

Tomato diseases pose a significant threat to global agricultural production, often leading to substantial yield loss and major economic damage. Traditional disease detection methods rely on manual inspection, which is not only time-consuming and labor-intensive but also difficult to implement for real-time monitoring. While deep learning-based object detection techniques offer a potential alternative to manual inspection, existing models still face challenges in extracting subtle disease features, suppressing complex background interference, and in handling multi-scale disease representations

Semiochemicals and odorant receptors underlying potato cultivar susceptibility and resistance to potato tuber moth.

Infestation of potato by the potato tuber moth (Phthorimaea operculella) varies markedly among cultivars, yet the chemical and molecular mechanisms underlying this variation remain poorly understood. Here, we combine field surveys, chemical ecology, functional genomics, and structural modeling to reveal how cultivar-specific volatile profiles shape moth oviposition behavior and pest outcomes. Field and laboratory assays identified marked differences in adult attraction, oviposition, and larval damage among potato cultivars, which correlated with distinct blends of emitted volatile organic comp

Enhancement mechanism of low-frequency magnetic field on the gelation and structures of potato protein emulsion gel.

The objective of this study was to investigate the enhancement mechanism of low-frequency magnetic field (LF-MF) on the gelation and structures of potato protein-linseed oil emulsion gel. Results indicated that the gel strength and water holding capacity of the gel induced by 6 mT LF-MF intensity were significantly increased from 0.33 N‧mm and 42.7 % to 0.61 N‧mm and 46.3 %, respectively. Nuclear magnetic resonance analysis demonstrated a significant reduction in relaxation time. The gel with LF-MF treatment exhibited denser and more homogeneous microstructures with better uniform distribution

Dynamics of Pectins and Photosynthetic Traits in Sunflower and Tomato Subjected to Gradual Recoveries Preceded by Water Deprivation.

Drought affects plant traits and cell wall composition. Here, sunflower and tomato plants were subjected to six treatments differing in water availability: control (CL, full irrigation), short-term water deficit stress (ST) and gradual recoveries addressed after 3, 6, 12 and 24 h of rewatering plants previously subjected to ST (ST-Rec 3, 6, 12 and 24 h, respectively). Under ST, both species reduced net CO2 assimilation (AN) due to decreased stomatal and mesophyll conductances (gs and gm, respectively), enhancing water use efficiency (WUE). Nonetheless, these traits were gradually restored upon
