Relationship between cognitive function and brain activation in late-life depression patients with and without frailty: a functional near-infrared spectroscopy study.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Frailty and cognitive impairment commonly co-occur in late-life depression (LLD), but the task-evoked cortical alterations associated with frailty-related cognitive dysfunction in LLD remain unclear. We examined cognitive performance and cortical activation during a verbal fluency task (VFT) in LLD patients with and without frailty. METHODS: Ninety-two older adults were included: 30 frail LLD patients (F-LLD), 32 non-frail LLD patients (NF-LLD), and 30 healthy controls (HC). Frailty was assessed using the Fried frailty phenotype. Global cognition and verbal fluency w

Changes in Cerebral Hemodynamic Among Patients With Schizophrenia or Bipolar Disorder Receiving Electroconvulsive Therapy: A Task-Related Functional Near-Infrared Spectroscopy Study.

There remains a scarcity of studies to evaluate the treatment effect of electroconvulsive therapy (ECT). Functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) offers a cost-effective method to measure cerebral hemodynamics. This study used fNIRS to evaluate the effect of ECT in patients suffering from schizophrenia or bipolar disorder (manic phase). Thirty patients with mania and 31 with schizophrenia were recruited. Each participant received 6 sessions of ECT. This study utilized the Positive and Negative Syndrome Scale, Young Mania Rating Scale, and fNIRS-verbal fluency test paradigm at baseline and

Cortical activation and functional connectivity in patients with chronic insomnia based on working memory tasks: a multi-channel near-infrared spectroscopy study.

BACKGROUND: Working memory (WM) impairment has been found in patients with insomnia, and the frontotemporal region plays a central role in working memory. Therefore, changes in functional connectivity in the frontotemporal region may play an important role in WM impairment in patients of chronic insomnia, but little is known about the neural processes associated with WM dysfunction in patients with chronic insomnia. This study used functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) to investigate differences in cortical activation and functional connectivity during a WM task between patients with c

Assessment of Microcirculatory Changes in Patients With Cervical Spinal Cord Injuries and Neurogenic Shock During the Acute Phase Using Near-Infrared Spectroscopy.

Background Cervical spinal cord injury (SCI) is a severe condition that can lead to neurogenic shock, a life-threatening complication. Neurogenic shock is characterized by a sudden impairment of sympathetic tone, resulting in vasodilation, hypotension, and bradycardia. This disruption can significantly affect blood flow dynamics, particularly in the microcirculation. Near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) is a device that enables the monitoring of tissue oxygenation and the assessment of microcirculatory status. This study aimed to apply NIRS in conjunction with the vascular occlusion test (VOT) to

Atypical prefrontal neural activity during an emotional interference control task in adolescents with autism spectrum disorder: A functional near-infrared spectroscopy study.

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is typically characterized by impairments in social interaction and communication, which may be associated with a failure to naturally orient to social stimuli, particularly in recognizing and responding to facial emotions. As most previous studies have used nonsocial stimuli to investigate inhibitory control in children and adults with ASD, little is known about the behavioral and neural activation patterns of emotional inhibitory control in adolescent with ASD. Functional neuroimaging studies have underscored the key role of the prefrontal cortex (PFC) in inhib

The relationship between sympathetic nervous activity and cerebral hemodynamics and oxygenation: a study using skin conductance measurement and functional near-infrared spectroscopy.

Simultaneous measurement of cortical and peripheral affective processing is relevant in many neuroscientific research fields. The aim was to investigate the influence of different affective task components on the coherence between cortical hemodynamic signals and peripheral autonomic skin potential signals. Seventeen healthy subjects performed four tasks, i.e. a finger-tapping task, a hyperventilation task, a working memory task and a risk-taking task. Cortical hemodynamic responses were measured using functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS). Peripheral skin conductance responses (SCRs)

Pilot study on near-infrared spectroscopy in peripheral artery disease: Differentiating upper and lower limbs and its correlation with the ankle-brachial index.

Peripheral artery disease (PAD) is a global health challenge, with current diagnostic methods, including the ankle-brachial index (ABI), having limitations, particularly in patients with arterial calcification. Near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) offers potential advantages as a non-invasive assessment tool, yet its clinical utility in PAD remains underexplored. This pilot study evaluated NIRS for differentiating between non-ischemic upper limbs and ischemic lower limbs, and assessed NIRS correlation with ABI. To do that, we performed an observational, cross-sectional study employing a convenien
