Rate vs. rhythm characteristics of cluttering with data from a "syllable-timed" language.

PURPOSE: Cluttering is a type of fluency disorder characterized by a speech rate which is perceived to be fast and/or irregular as well as by an abnormal speech rhythm. As far as we know, no research has been conducted as yet using objective measurements and acoustic phonetic description on the rhythm of cluttered speech. The aim of this study is to show by objective measurements whether there are any differences between the rhythm of cluttered and control speech, and which parameters point to such differences. METHODS: For the analysis, recordings of spontaneous speech samples were taken fro

Physiological and clinical outcomes associated with use of one-way speaking valves on tracheostomised patients: A systematic review.

BACKGROUND: The one way speaking valve was first engineered in 1985 to allow patients with tracheostomies to communicate. The research has indicated alternative physiological benefits of using a speaking valve, however this literature has not yet been evaluated. The purpose of this systematic review was to evaluate the evidence for one-way speaking valve in a range of physiological domains, including vital signs, aspiration, olfaction, ventilation and tracheostomy weaning, length of stay, and quality of life. METHODS: A literature search was conducted in September 2017. Studies were eligible

A survey of the clinical management of childhood apraxia of speech in the United States and Canada.

PURPOSE: Limited information is available about the current practices of generalist speech-language pathologists (SLPs) in relation to their … ch to treat CAS which is consistent with previous findings both in the CAS literature and the wider speech disorders literature. The more commonly used primary interventions were the K-SLP and DTTC (US); and PROMPT ® (Canada), with one of the strongest factors that influenced clinicians' choice of intervention being familiarity with the treatment approach. Tap and trill clusters in typical and protracted phonological development: Challenging segments in complex phonological environments. Introduction to the special issue.

The papers in this crosslinguistic issue address children's acquisition of word-initial rhotic clusters in languages with taps/trills, that is, the acquisition of challenging segments in complex environments. Several papers also include comparisons with singleton rhotics and/or /l/ as a singleton or in clusters. The studies are part of a larger investigation that uses similar methodologies across languages in order to enhance crosslinguistic comparability (Bernhardt and Stemberger, 2012, 2015). Participants for the current studies were monolingual preschoolers with typical or protracted phonol

Tele-voice therapy. Application of the tele-medicine paradigm to speech therapy for dysphonia: A systematic review.

OBJECTIVE: Over the last decades, tele-rehabilitation has been gaining popularity in speech and language disorders. To date, studies on tele-speech therapy have been focused mostly on speech and/or communication disorders. However, only a minority of the available investigations delved into voice disorders. The main aim of this review has been to summarize and critically analyze the available evidence on tele-rehabilitation in voice disorders. METHODS: A search of the English literature was conducted in PubMed, Scopus and Web of Science. Original reports were included investigating the feasib

Speech, prosody, and voice characteristics of a mother and daughter with a 7;13 translocation affecting FOXP2.

PURPOSE: The primary goal of this case study was to describe the speech, prosody, and voice characteristics of a mother and daughter with a breakpoint in a balanced 7;13 chromosomal translocation that disrupted the transcription gene, FOXP2 (cf. J. B. Tomblin et al., 2005). As with affected members of the widely cited KE family, whose communicative disorders have been associated with a point mutation in the FOXP2 gene, both mother and daughter had cognitive, language, and speech challenges. A 2nd goal of the study was to illustrate in detail, the types of speech, prosody, and voice metrics tha

"Long term speech outcomes after using the Sommerlad technique for primary palatoplasty: a retrospective study in the Wilhelmina Children's Hospital, Utrecht.".

OBJECTIVES: After cleft lip and/or palate (CL/P) repair, children may develop velopharyngeal insufficiency (VPI) leading to speech imperfections, necessitating additional speech correcting surgery. This study examines the incidence of VPI and speech correcting surgery after Sommerlad's palatoplasty for CL/P, and its association with various clinical features. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A retrospective cohort study was performed in the Wilhelmina Children's Hospital in Utrecht and child records from 380 individuals with CL/P registered from 2008 to 2017 were retrospectively reviewed. Inclusion cri

Speech Perception Variability in Childhood Apraxia of Speech: Implications for Assessment and Intervention.

PURPOSE: Beyond hallmark production deficits characterizing childhood apraxia of speech (CAS), largely attributed to disruption(s) in speech motor planning, children with CAS often present with co-occurring speech perception and language difficulties. Thus, careful consideration of the potential for speech perception difficulties to have cascading downstream effects on intervention responsiveness and real-life functioning for some children with CAS is highly important. The purpose of this tutorial was to consider the impact of speech perception abilities in children with CAS, which carries imp

Disentangling Crowdfunding from Fraudfunding.

BACKGROUND: Adenoid hypertrophy alters the posture of the oro-facial structures by obstructing the upper airways and restricting nasal breathing. These postural changes may eventually have an impact on facial skeletal development and dental occlusion. The postural adjustments may negatively impact a child's life by affecting a number of speech-production factors. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to detect the speech sound disorders in school aged Egyptian children with adenoid hypertrophy and if they were related to structure changes in the airway that caused by adenoid hypertrophy. METHODOLOGY:

Unpacking the Black Box: A Systematic Search and Narrative Review of Components in Pediatric Speech and Language Therapy Sessions.

BACKGROUND: There is limited empirical data describing components of pediatric speech-language therapy sessions across the range of practice areas. In many cases, intervention sessions function as a "black box" with internal workings insufficiently documented or understood. This systematic search and review investigates how pediatric speech-language pathology intervention sessions are described and measured. METHOD: A systematic search and review were conducted based on the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses guidelines. Five databases were searched for peer-rev

Speech input processing in children born with cleft palate: A systematic literature review with narrative synthesis.

BACKGROUND: Speech development requires intact and adequately functioning oral anatomy and cognitive 'speech processing' skills. There is evidence that speech input processing skills are associated with speech output problems in children not born with a cleft. Children born with cleft palate ± lip (CP±L) are at high risk of developing disordered speech output. Less is known about their speech input processing skills and whether they are associated with cleft-related speech sound disorder (SSD). AIMS: (1) To collate and evaluate studies reporting evidence regarding the speech input processing

Direction of attentional focus in biofeedback treatment for /r/ misarticulation.

BACKGROUND: Maintaining an external direction of focus during practice is reported to facilitate acquisition of non-speech motor skills, but it is not known whether these findings also apply to treatment for speech errors. This question has particular relevance for treatment incorporating visual biofeedback, where clinician cueing can direct the learner's attention either internally (i.e., to the movements of the articulators) or externally (i.e., to the visual biofeedback display). AIMS: This study addressed two objectives. First, it aimed to use single-subject experimental methods to collec

Behavioral and neurobiological correlates of childhood apraxia of speech in Italian children.

Childhood apraxia of speech (CAS) is a neurogenic Speech Sound Disorder whose etiology and neurobiological correlates are still unclear. In the present study, 32 Italian children with idiopathic CAS underwent a comprehensive speech and language, genetic and neuroradiological investigation aimed to gather information on the possible behavioral and neurobiological markers of the disorder. The results revealed four main aggregations of behavioral symptoms that indicate a multi-deficit disorder involving both motor-speech and language competence. Six children presented with chromosomal alterations

How differences in anatomy and physiology and other aetiology affect the way we label and describe speech in individuals with cleft lip and palate.

BACKGROUND: Speech in individuals with cleft lip and/or palate (CLP) is a complex myriad of presenting symptoms. It is uniquely associated with the structural difference of velopharyngeal insufficiency (VPI), together with a wide and heterogeneous range of other aetiologies which often co-occur. The nature of the speech sound disorder (SSD) including VPI may also change over the course of an individual's care pathway. Differences in terminology and approaches to analysis are currently used, resulting in confusion internationally. Additionally, current diagnostic labels and classification syste
