"I Can't Do It All, Even Though I Want To": A Qualitative Investigation of Implementation Barriers and Facilitators for School-Based Speech-Language Pathologists in Concussion Management.

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to examine implementation barriers and facilitators related to evidence-based concussion management among school-based speech-language pathologists (SLPs). Using the Integrated Promoting Action on Research Implementation in Health Services (i-PARIHS) framework, we explored how innovation, recipient, context, and facilitation factors influence SLPs' ability to bridge the know-do gap in return-to-learn (RTL) care for students with concussion. METHOD: We conducted qualitative semistructured interviews with 10 school-based SLPs purposively selected to reflec

The Speech-Language Pathologist's Role in Supporting Autistic Students in Postsecondary Education Settings.

PURPOSE: Navigating the postsecondary landscape is a complex and daunting journey for many autistic students due to widespread misconceptions about autism among nonautistic peers and educators. Additionally, barriers to self-advocacy limit students' academic and social integration, ultimately compromising their ability to graduate. Despite these challenges, there remains inadequate support for this population with social communication, executive functioning, and self-advocacy. Speech-language pathologists (SLPs) are well positioned to reduce existing barriers and provide support to autistic st

The Influence of Perspective on Perception: Assessing Residue Across Planes of Videofluoroscopy.

OBJECTIVES: (1) To determine whether perception of pharyngeal residue severity differs by view plane on videofluoroscopy. (2) To explore whether the Bolus Clearance Ratio (BCR) can be reliably applied in the anterior-posterior (AP) plane. (3) To investigate the relationship between perception of residue severity and BCR measures across view planes. METHODS: Images of the same bolus condition in lateral and AP were rated using a simple 5-point ordinal descriptive scale (none, trace, mild, moderate, severe) by 225 speech-language pathologists via electronic survey. BCR measures were obtained fo

The 2016 G. Paul Moore Lecture: Lessons in Voice Rehabilitation: Journal of Voice and Clinical Practice.

This Paul Moore Lecture honors the contributions made by authors to the Journal of Voice during a period of 30 years, from 1987. Fifty articles were selected and included under the following five topics: (1) normalcy of the larynx and voice; (2) the clinical speech-language pathologist's evaluation; (3) the patient's perspective; (4) the core of vocal rehabilitation; and (5) behavioral versus organic dysphonias. The analysis reflects a vivid landscape of the specific area and significant advances in knowledge. It also shows the valuable interdependence between science and clinical practice. Th

Gabapentin in chronic cough.

BACKGROUND: Chronic cough is regarded as a challenging clinical problem due to its frequency and often limited therapeutic options. Chronic cough that remains refractory to usual medical treatment causes significant quality of life impairment. METHODS: Recent developments in the treatment of cough include the use of speech pathology and pharmacotherapy with gabapentin. Relevant randomised control trials, reviews and case reports were identified through a PubMed and SCOPUS search of English-language literature referring to these concepts over the last eight years. RESULTS: The effectiveness o

[Auditory neuropathy and prematurity: modern view of the issue (literature review)].

Auditory neuropathy spectrum disorder (ANSD) is a specific auditory disorder caused by dysfunction of periphery part of the auditory system, in which the function of the outer hair cells is preserved, but the afferent input at the cochlear level suffers due to the pathology of the inner hair cells, neurons of the spiral ganglion and/or the auditory nerve, as well as synaptic contact between them. As a result, a specific condition is formed, in which a patient's otoacoustic emissions and/or cochlear microphonics are present, auditory brainstem responses are abnormal or absent, the discrepancy b

[Put sound, but the sense, the multilinguisms].

Exchanges, travel, intercountry adoption which has become an increasingly common practice, uprooting, etc. have disrupted the compositions of increasingly multilingual societies and families. The development of research in cognitive sciences and the birth of bilingualism as a field of study since the 1970s, together with recent advances in linguistics, psychology, neuroimaging and speech therapy have made it possible to better describe the neuropsychological function and development of the bilingual person, particularly in the development of the normo and hearing-impaired child, in both lan

Nursing personnel and speech-language therapists communication practices in dysphagia management.

BACKGROUND: Communication between speech-language therapists (SLTs) and nursing personnel is essential for safe dysphagia management, as unclear exchanges can compromise patient outcomes and care continuity. In South Africa, high patient loads, limited dysphagia training, and linguistic diversity create additional challenges, making effective interprofessional communication crucial. OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to identify communication practices related to dysphagia in exchanges between SLTs and nursing personnel, focusing on mutual understanding, openness in interactions and frustration exp

Family-centered Services for Children with ASD and Limited Speech: The Experiences of Parents and Speech-language Pathologists.

Although family-centered services have long been discussed as essential in providing successful services to families of children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD), ideal implementation is often lacking. This study aimed to increase understanding of how families with children with ASD and limited speech receive services from speech-language pathologists (SLPs). 99 parents of children with ASD and limited speech and 211 SLPs who served children with ASD and limited speech completed questionnaires measuring their experiences with the provision of family-centered services. Findings revealed that

Pediatric Traumatic Brain Injury: Speech-Language Pathologists Must Have a Seat at the Table.

PURPOSE: This viewpoint aimed to highlight gaps in the integration of speech-language pathologists (SLPs) within pediatric traumatic brain injury (TBI) care pathways and to suggest strategies to strengthen SLP involvement across health care and educational settings. For example, we understand that young children who experience concussion or mild TBI may not be seen for assessment or treatment. Although cognitive-communication disorders are common after pediatric TBI and fall within the scope of speech-language pathology practice, referral and involvement remain inconsistent. This viewpoint syn…

Relationships Between Hearing-Related and Health-Related Variables in Academic Progress of Children With Unilateral Hearing Loss.

PURPOSE: School-age children with unilateral hearing loss are at an increased risk of exhibiting academic difficulties. Yet, approximately half of children with unilateral hearing loss will not require additional support. There is a dearth of information to assist in determining which of these children will express academic deficits and which will not. The purpose of this study was to identify hearing- and health-related factors that contribute to adverse educational progress in children with permanent unilateral hearing loss. Specific indicators of academic concern identified during school ag

Effect of speech-language therapy after low-level laser therapy in patients with TMD: a descriptive study.

Increased pain and/or discomfort during chewing, speaking, and swallowing have been commonly reported by patients with Temporomandibular Dysfunction (TMD). Speech-language pathology therapy (orofacial myofunctional therapy - OMT) has been proposed as part of the treatment for this condition; however, it is a modality that should be introduced when the TMD context and the pain are not accentuated, so that they do not prevent or hinder the performance of exercises. The aim of this study was to analyze the effect of OMT on the treatment of patients with TMD, according to the Research Diagnostic C…

Integrating a Parent-Implemented Blend of Developmental and Behavioral Intervention Strategies into Speech-Language Treatment for Toddlers at Risk for Autism Spectrum Disorder.

Naturalistic developmental behavioral interventions include an explicit focus on coaching parents to use therapy techniques in daily routines and are considered best practice for young children with autism. Unfortunately, these approaches are not widely used in community settings, possibly due to the clinical expertise and training required. This article presents the work of the Bond, Regulate, Interact, Develop, Guide, Engage (BRIDGE Collaborative), a multidisciplinary group of service providers (including speech-language pathologists), parents, funding agency representatives, and researchers
