Brazil has experienced geographic expansion of zoonotic sporotrichosis. Social problems in the country contribute substantially to the expansion. A comprehensive sporotrichosis control program is beyond the sphere of public health. A One Health approach is needed to control the disease in animals and humans.

A 13-year-old girl presented with multiple painless purulent ulcers with raised borders on the medial aspect of the sole of her right foot associated with inguinal lymphadenopathy for the past 4 years. There was history of local trauma at the site prior to the formation of ulcers. There were no other significant associated signs or symptoms. The patient was initially treated with multiple antibiotics with minimal improvement. Fungal cultures of biopsy specimens demonstrated the presence of colonies of Sporothrix schenckii thus confirming the diagnosis of sporotrichosis. Oral itraconazole at th…

The present study reports the histopathological findings of 86 skin lesions of dogs with sporotrichosis from Rio de Janeiro. Suppurative granulomatous inflammation was the predominant finding and was observed in 76 (88.37%) cases. Plasma cells surrounding the suppurative granulomas were detected in 68 (89.5%) cases and an inflammatory infiltrate at the periphery of these granulomatous lesions was observed in 63 (82.9%). Fungus-specific staining revealed yeast cells compatible with Sporothrix schenckii in 36 cases. These fungal elements were only detected in lesions characterized by suppurative…

Sporotrichosis is a chronic subcutaneous mycosis caused by Sporothrix schenckii. This work aimed to evaluate the virulence of two different isolates of S. schenckii from cutaneous (CUT) and systemic (SYS) forms of feline sporotrichosis. A standard inoculum with 2 x 10(3) yeast cells/ml was prepared from each of the isolates. The experimental infection was carried out with 0.1 ml of the inoculum from both isolates and then injected in the paw pads of Swiss albino mice of groups CUT and SYS. The clinical evolution of the disease and the diameter of the lesion at the inoculated sites were evaluat…

Two patients were infected with sporotrichosis; one had the fixed cutaneous form, the other the lymphocutaneous form. Sporotrichosis schenckii was identified in both with a culture from a tissue biopsy. Both patients were successfully treated with itraconazole, one received 100 mg and the other 200 mg itraconazole daily over a 3 months period.

About 1,100 cases of sporotrichosis were reported in Japan between 1955 and 1973. From February 1975, when our hospital opened, to November 1979, we encountered eight cases of this disease. The patients, two males and six females, were aged from 6 months to 90 years old. Among the clinical types, three cases were of the lymphangitic type and five cases were of the localized type. Seven cases treated with oral potassium iodine and one case treated with topical thermotherapy were cured or improved by such treatments. We report here these eight cases with a discussion on clinical manifestations i

The authors report three cases of mycosic subcutaneous cysts and study the problem of the phaeo-sporotrichosis, a cystic lesion due to dematies brown fungi which are often introduced under the skin by a sting. Because of the absence of brown pigmentation of the fungi present in the three cases reported, the authors propose to group these various cysts under the name of "syndrome of the mycosic cysts" a part of which only being constituted by the phaeosporo trichosis. They emphasize the importance to draw surgeons' attention on such lesions, a priori clinically banal, and pathologists' attentio

Sporotrichosis is the most common deep mycosis in Latin America. The zoonotic transmission from cats has been demonstrated over the last few decades in many countries. A forty year-old veterinarian examined a cat with multiple ulcerations, which mycological examination isolated Sporothrix schenckii. During the examination, she was bitten in the right index finger by the animal. Two weeks later, an inflammatory lesion appeared, which became ulcerated and was followed by ascendant lymphangitis. The diagnoses of lymphocutaneous sporotrichosis and of a six weeks pregnancy were established. The les…

An adult female nine-banded armadillo (Dasypus novemcinctus) died in the quarantine station of a private Swiss zoo. Multifocal ulcerative sk … e cells varied, with some nonbudding cells resembling Cryptococcus neoformans and others resembling Sporothrix schenckii. A diagnosis of sporotrichosis was confirmed by immunofluorescence studies. This is the first report of sporotrichosis in an armadillo in a zoological garden and the third report of sporotrichosis in D. novemcinctus.

PURPOSE: To report a case of intraocular sporotrichosis presenting with bilateral granulomatous panuveitis.
METHODS: Observational case report and literature review.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 62-year-old woman with a history of polycythemia vera presented with a non-healing ulcer at the left index finger, generalized erythematous papules, and bilateral granulomatous panuveitis. Cultures of skin and amputated finger identified Sporothrix schenckii. The diagnosis of intraocular sporotrichosis secondary to disseminated sporotrichosis was made. Intravenous liposomal Amphotericin B and intravitreal Am…

A healthy 35-year-old Brazilian woman presented with persistent redness, swelling, and multiple wounds on the hand 2 weeks after a cat bite … d but did not resolve. Four days after hospital discharge, a wound culture resulted as positive for Sporothrix schenchii. The patient was treated with itraconazole. Sporotrichosis is endemic in many countries including Brazil and is known to be transmitted by cat bites. Sporotrichosis should be considered in the differential diagnosis for patients who have s …

OBJECTIVES: We evaluated the efficacy of cryosurgery in association with itraconazole for the treatment of feline sporotrichosis. We also compared the length of treatment protocol with others reported in the literature.
METHODS: Cats naturally infected with fungi of the Sporothrix schenckii complex were evaluated. Diagnosis was confirmed by cytology and fungal culture. Prior to the cryosurgical procedure, every animal was receiving itraconazole 10 mg/kg/day PO, for different time periods. The same protocol was maintained until 4 weeks after complete healing of the lesions.
RESULTS: Eleven of…

The aim of this study was to apply immunohistochemistry (IHC) for the diagnosis of canine sporotrichosis and to compare this method with the … .5%, 43.7% and 65.5% of the group 1 cases, respectively. The detection of intracellular antigens of Sporothrix schenckii by IHC increased the sensitivity of the histological diagnosis to 80.5%. No positive reaction was observed in ATL lesions. The results suggest that IHC may be indicated for the diagnosis of sporotrichosis because of its higher diagnostic s …

Many of the feline zoonoses occur more frequently in veterinary personnel owing to their direct contact with cats and the potential for exposure to infected body tissue or fluids. Infection of humans with Afipia felis, Yersinia pestis, Francisella tularensis, and other aerobic/anaerobic bacteria may cause great discomfort and in some situations terminal illness. Although many systemic fungal agents infect humans and cats, only Sporothrix schenckii has been shown to infect humans following direct exposure to infected cats. Various parasites, enteric protozoans and bacteria, and Toxoplasma gondi…
