The human blood coagulation factor catalyses the cross-linking of fibrin monomers at the end of the coagulation cascade. Additional functions are the coupling of fibronectin and collagen to each other and fibrin. Therefore we tried to investigate the significance of factor XIII in the development of intraocular membranes. Using gel electrophoresis and western blotting, both subunits (A and B) of factor XIII could be detected in vitreous aspirates from patients with "idiopathic" proliferative vitreoretinopathy (PVR) (n = 5), traumatic PVR (n = 5), and proliferative diabetic retinopathy (n = 5).

Neurofibromatosis type 2 (NF2) is a formidable disease with considerable morbidity. Among tumors associated with NF2, schwannomas are the most difficult to treat because they are multiple and tend to recur. Oil red O (ORO) staining is a widely used histological technique for visualizing neutral lipids in Caenorhabditis elegans. However, quantitative image analysis of ORO-stained worms remains largely manual, time-consuming, and prone to human error. Here, we present a protocol for automating the quantification of ORO staining using Redwormpix, an open-source Python-based application. We describe steps for installing software, transferring images, and running the application. We then detail procedures for manual validation and exporting results.
