Dynamic and Context-Dependent Modulation of Somatosensory Input in the Primate Primary Motor Cortex.

During voluntary movement, somatosensory input is attenuated, a phenomenon known as sensory gating, which may prevent the CNS from being overwhelmed by predictable afferent feedback not essential for motor control. In the cerebral cortex, sensory gating has been demonstrated in primary (S1) and higher-order sensory areas. The primary motor cortex (M1) is the major cortical output relay to the spinal cord and muscles, and proprioceptive feedback is crucial for shaping motor output. However, whether proprioceptive signals to M1 are attenuated during movement and, if so, for what functional purpo

AMPA/kainate receptors drive rapid output and precise synchrony in olfactory bulb granule cells.

Gamma frequency (30-70 Hz) synchronized oscillatory activity in the olfactory bulb is widely believed to be important for odor detection and discrimination. As in other circuits with "gamma activity," the activity in the bulb is driven by GABAergic interneurons, specifically a class of axonless cells called granule cells. However, bulb granule cells appear to lack some key mechanistic features that promote rapid synchrony in other circuits, including direct electrical interconnections and dominant actions for fast neurotransmitter receptors. At least under "static" stimulus conditions, granule

Topical analgesics and blood pressure during static contraction in humans.

PURPOSE: In decerebrate cats, topical application of analgesic balm (AB) can attenuate the pressor response to electrically induced static contraction. We examined the possibility that this phenomenon also occurs in humans and determined whether such effects were limited to a local action on the contracting muscle (e.g., attenuations of the action of groups III and IV muscle afferents that cause the exercise pressor reflex) or whether they also may have affected active muscle blood flow and/or central command. METHODS: Blood pressure (mean arterial pressure (MAP)), heart rate (HR), brachial a

Nanoemulsion strategy for olmesartan medoxomil improves oral absorption and extended antihypertensive activity in hypertensive rats.

Olmesartan medoxomil (OM) is hydrolyzed to its active metabolite olmesartan by the action of aryl esterase to exert its antihypertensive actions by selectively blocking angiotensin II-AT1 receptor. Poor aqueous solubility and uncontrolled enzymatic conversion of OM to its poorly permeable olmesartan limits its oral bioavailability. The aim of the current study was to formulate a novel nanoemulsion of OM to improve its pharmacokinetics and therapeutic efficacy. The oil-in-water (o/w) nanoemulsion of OM was developed using lipoid purified soybean oil 700, sefsol 218 and solutol HS 15. We have ch

The fluid mechanics of aspiration thrombectomy.

Large vessel occlusion causing acute ischemic stroke is ideally treated with endovascular clot retrieval, which is increasingly being performed via direct aspiration thrombectomy. Successful aspiration thrombectomy depends on multiple tenets of fluid and solid mechanics, including the application of hydrostatic and hydrodynamic forces to lodged clots. These fundamental concepts predict factors that may increase efficacy in clot removal, and help to explain the differences in performance seen among varying aspiration techniques (remote vs direct), catheters (suction force increases with diamete

Synthesis, characterization and dielectric properties of SnO2 thin films.

SnO2 thin films have been grown on glass substrates using Successive Ionic Layer Adsorption and Reaction (SILAR) method at room temperature and ambient pressure. The annealing temperature effect on the structural, morphological, optical and electrical properties of SnO2 thin films has been investigated. The X-ray Diffraction (XRD) and Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) studies have showed that all the films have exhibited polycrystalline nature with tetragonal structure and have been covered well on glass substrates. The crystalline and surface properties of the films have improved with increa

Control of spatial orientation of the angular vestibulo-ocular reflex by the nodulus and uvula of the vestibulocerebellum.

Eye velocity produced by the angular vestibulo-ocular reflex (aVOR) tends to align with the summed vector of gravity and other linear accelerations [gravito-inertial acceleration (GIA)]. Defined as "spatial orientation of the aVOR," we propose that it is controlled by the nodulus and uvula of the vestibulocerebellum. Here, electrical stimulation, injections of the GABAA agonist, muscimol, and single-cell recordings were utilized to investigate this spatial orientation. Stimulation, injection, and recording sites in the nodulus were determined in vivo by MRI and verified in histological section

Responses of neurons in the central cervical nucleus of the rat to proprioceptive and vestibular inputs.

Activity of neurons in the central cervical nucleus (CCN) was recorded extracellularly in decerebrate, immobilized rats. Neurons were identified by their antidromic response to electrical stimulation of the contralateral superior cerebellar peduncle. Stimulation of the ipsilateral dorsal neck muscles (m. biventer cervicis and complexus [BCC]; m. splenius [S]) by a single electric pulse evoked a short-latency (approximately 1 ms) excitatory response in the majority of CCN neurons. The response was usually followed by a period of inhibition of the resting discharge (approximately 20 ms). Stimula

Analysis and control of grid-interactive PV-fed BLDC water pumping system with optimized MPPT for DC-DC converter.

In this study, a novel water pumping module fed by grid interactive Photo-Voltaic with a bidirectional Power Flow Control was proposed. In addition to improving the pumping system's reliability, a water pump is powered by a brushless DC motor drive. This method enables the pump to work at its maximum capacity for the entirety of that day, regardless of the weather. The entire system becomes more reliable as a result of the motor's increased use of photovoltaic (PV) generated power for pumping applications. Maximum Power Point Tracking (MPPT) controller incorporating Machine Learning algorithm

Dual-ferroelectric stacked high-performance field-effect transistor.

Ferroelectric transistors have the potential to meet the computing demands of data-intensive applications such as artificial intelligence. However, the existing research lacks functional reconfigurability and multi-task parallel processing capability. Here, we report a dual-ferroelectric stacked transistor that operates through opto-electric dual-mode induced ferroelectric polarization reversal, which features configurable multi-mode functionality encompassing electronic storage, multi-level optical memory, and visual functional emulation. The dual-ferroelectric architecture significantly enha

Reconfigurable ferroelectric chiral nanostructures enable fast-switchable optical spatial differentiation.

Analog spatial differentiation is an emerging computational paradigm. By virtue of high speed and low-power consumption, optical method plays an important role in data compression, microscopy and computer vision. However, most developed optical differentiators are static and lack the reconfigurability of differentiation functions. Herein, we propose a reconfigurable space-variant ferroelectric chiral nanostructure to dynamically control the optical differentiation. Via switching the polarity of external electric field, 1st-order/2nd-order spatial differentiation or bright-field imaging can be

Single-molecule force spectroscopy reveals the dynamic strength of the hair-cell tip-link connection.

The conversion of auditory and vestibular stimuli into electrical signals is initiated by force transmitted to a mechanotransduction channel through the tip link, a double stranded protein filament held together by two adhesion bonds in the middle. Although thought to form a relatively static structure, the dynamics of the tip-link connection has not been measured. Here, we biophysically characterize the strength of the tip-link connection at single-molecule resolution. We show that a single tip-link bond is more mechanically stable relative to classic cadherins, and our data indicate that the

No short-term effects of high-frequency electromagnetic fields on the mammalian pineal gland.

There is ample experimental evidence that changes of earth-strength static magnetic fields, pulsed magnetic fields, or alternating electric fields (60 Hz) depress the nocturnally enhanced melatonin synthesis of the pineal gland of certain mammals. No data on the effects of high-frequency electromagnetic fields on melatonin synthesis is available. In the present study, exposure to 900 MHz electromagnetic fields [0.1 to 0.6 mW/cm2, approximately 0.06 to 0.36 W/kg specific absorption rate (SAR) in rats and 0.04 W/kg in Djungarian hamsters; both continuous and/or pulsed at 217 Hz, for 15 min to 6

Comparative effects of recovery strategies on exercise-induced muscle fatigue:a randomized controlled trial.

OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to compare the effects of five post-exercise recovery interventions-massage, cold-water immersion (CWI), vibration therapy, functional electrical stimulation (FES), and static stretching-on central nervous modulation, neuromuscular function recovery, and inflammatory response following exercise-induced muscle fatigue (EIMF). METHODS: This randomized controlled trial employed a two-way repeated-measures analysis of variance (ANOVA; group × time) to evaluate the effects of different recovery interventions over time. Thirty healthy male participants were randomly assi

Dynamic Energy Optimization and Lighting Flexibility Classification for Sustainable Vertical Farming: A Simulation-Based Multi-Scenario Analysis.

BACKGROUND: Vertical farming offers a promising solution to food production challenges in urban and climate-constrained regions, yet its high energy demand raises concerns about sustainability. Most existing studies assess energy demand and CO 2 emissions under static operational assumptions and lack a comprehensive framework linking seasonal renewable availability, crop cycle timing, and operational flexibility to system resilience and grid dependency. METHODS: This study evaluates the performance and carbon footprint of a fully enclosed pilot vertical farming unit in Northern Greece using T

Dissecting the Binding Affinity of Anti-SARS-CoV-2 Compounds to Human Transmembrane Protease, Serine 2: A Computational Study.

The human transmembrane protease, serine 2 (TMPRSS2), essential for SARS-CoV-2 entry, is a key antiviral target. Here, we computationally profiled the TMPRSS2-binding affinities of 15 antiviral compounds. Molecular dynamics (MD) simulations for the docked complexes revealed that three compounds exited the substrate-binding cavity (SBC), suggesting noncompetitive inhibition. Of the remaining compounds, five charged ones exhibited reduced binding stability due to competing electrostatic interactions and increased solvent exposure, while seven neutral compounds showed stronger binding affinity dr

One-Step Facile Synthesis of a Cationic Photosensitizer with Electrostatic Anchoring of Bacteria for Photodynamic Therapy of MRSA-Infected Wounds.

Bacterial infection refers to a series of pathological processes caused by bacteria invading the host's body, growing and reproducing, and interacting with the organism. However, antibiotics currently used for the treatment of bacterial infections require multiple administrations. Prolonged use or abuse can lead to bacterial resistance, resulting in treatment failure and, in severe cases, the emergence of "superbugs". Based on this, we have developed a cationic photosensitizer (Pyro-TPP), which can precisely target bacteria with negatively charged surfaces. Meanwhile, experiments have demonstr

Tannic Acid-Stabilized Silver Nanoparticles Used in Biomedical Application as an Effective Antimelioidosis and Prolonged Efflux Pump Inhibitor against Melioidosis Causative Pathogen.

Burkholderia pseudomallei is the causative pathogen of melioidosis and this bacterium is resistant to several antibiotics. Silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) are an interesting agent to develop to solve this bacterial resistance. Here, we characterize and assess the antimelioidosis activity of AgNPs against these pathogenic bacteria. AgNPs were characterized and displayed a maximum absorption band at 420 nm with a spherical shape, being well-monodispersed and having high stability in solution. The average size of AgNPs is 7.99 ± 1.46 nm. The antibacterial efficacy of AgNPs was evaluated by broth mic

Binding of Macrolide Antibiotics Leads to Ribosomal Selection against Specific Substrates Based on Their Charge and Size.

Macrolide antibiotic binding to the ribosome inhibits catalysis of peptide bond formation between specific donor and acceptor substrates. Why particular reactions are problematic for the macrolide-bound ribosome remains unclear. Using comprehensive mutational analysis and biochemical experiments with synthetic substrate analogs, we find that the positive charge of these specific residues and the length of their side chains underlie inefficient peptide bond formation in the macrolide-bound ribosome. Even in the absence of antibiotic, peptide bond formation between these particular donors and ac

Neomycin B-cyclen conjugates and their Zn(II) complexes as RNA-binding agents.

Three new conjugates featuring the aminoglycoside antibiotic neomycin B linked to the 1,4,7,10-tetraazacyclododecane (cyclen) macrocycle via alkyl chains of varying lengths were synthesized from suitably protected derivatives of these precursors via conventional peptide coupling protocols. The final products were characterized by 1H NMR spectroscopy, mass spectrometry, and elemental analysis. FRET-based measurements examining the ability of the compounds to displace coumarin-labelled kanamycin A or neomycin B from Dy547-labelled prokaryotic ribosomal A-site RNA revealed that they bind to the A
