Soluble cytokine receptors (sIL-2Rα, sIL-2Rβ) induce subunit-specific behavioral responses and accumulate in the cerebral cortex and basal forebrain.

Soluble cytokine receptors are normal constituents of body fluids that regulate peripheral cytokine and lymphoid activity. Levels of soluble IL-2 receptors (sIL-2R) are elevated in psychiatric disorders linked with autoimmune processes, including ones in which repetitive stereotypic behaviors and motor disturbances are present. However, there is no evidence that sIL-2Rs (or any peripheral soluble receptor) induce such behavioral changes, or that they localize in relevant brain regions. Here, we determined in male Balb/c mice the effects of single peripheral injections of sIL-2Rα or sIL-2Rβ (0-

Endogenous gonadal hormones modulate behavioral and neurochemical responses to acute and chronic cocaine administration.

Recent evidence demonstrates that there are sex differences in behavioral responses to cocaine. Further, reproductive gonadal hormones (estrogen, progesterone and testosterone) have been further implicated in mediating some of the cocaine-induced alterations. To better understand sex differences and the role of gonadal hormones in cocaine-induced locomotor and stereotypic behavior, intact and gonadectomized male and female Fischer rats were randomly assigned to either chronic cocaine (15 mg/kg) or saline treatments for 14 days followed by a challenge administration (7 days after the last cocai

Blaming the young is always more accessible rather than accusing the older employees: an experimental view over age and health in organizations.

INTRODUCTION: The stereotype content model postulates that different groups evoke different emotions and reactions based on two dimensions: intention toward others (warmth) and competence. METHODS: In this study, we used an experimental design and a qualitative approach to investigate how managerial strategies are selected and motivated when a subordinate makes a work task related error but belongs to a group that is stereotypical perceived differently in terms of warmth and competence (age groups with or without a medical condition). Thus 75 employees analyzed one of the five hypothetical ca

Behavioural assessment of pinealectomy and foetal pineal gland transplantation in rats: Part II.

Pineal gland is an endocrine organ which exerts regulatory effects on the activity of various organs and systems. The present study was undertaken to highlight in experimental animals the possible integrative function of this endocrine organ on a behavioural pattern. Pinealectomy and foetal pineal gland transplantation to a subpial cortical area close to the pinealectomized region was performed. Behaviour was defined through motor activity induced by low (2 mg/kg) and high (10 mg/kg) doses of amphetamine in rats. It was shown that pinealectomy produced significant different patterns of behavio

Protective effect of gallic acid in experimental model of ketamine-induced psychosis: possible behaviour, biochemical, neurochemical and cellular alterations.

Gallic acid has been reported to possess a number of psychopharmacological activities. These activities are attributed to the antioxidant potential due to the presence of phenolic moeity. The present study was carried out to investigate the protective effects of gallic acid in an experimental model of ketamine-induced psychosis in mice. Ketamine (50 mg/kg, i.p.) was used to induce stereotyped psychotic behavioural symptoms in mice. Behavioural studies (locomotor activity, stereotype behaviour, immobility duration and memory retention) were carried out to investigate the protective of gallic ac

Levamisole and cocaine synergism: a prevalent adulterant enhances cocaine's action in vivo.

Levamisole is estimated by the Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) to be present in about 80% of cocaine seized in the United States and linked to debilitating, and sometimes fatal, immunologic effects in cocaine abusers. One explanation for the addition of levamisole to cocaine is that it increases the amount of product and enhances profits. An alternative possibility, and one investigated here, is that levamisole alters cocaine's action in vivo. We specifically investigated effects of levamisole on cocaine's stereotypical and place-conditioning effects in an established invertebrate (planarian) as

The effects of expectancy violations on early attention to race in an impression-formation paradigm.

Previous research has demonstrated that early attentional components of the event-related potential (ERP) reflect differential attention to race during person perception. There is also evidence that inconsistency between stereotypic information following impression formation leads to greater neural processing in later ERP components. However, research has not examined how expectancy violations following impression formation affect the early attentional processing of race. The current study examined this issue by leading White participants to form impressions of targets based on positive or neg

Stereotypies and repetitive/restrictive behaviours in infants with autism and pervasive developmental disorder.

PURPOSE: Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD) are characterized by severe and debilitating symptoms including stereotyped and repetitive behaviours. Stereotypies and repetitive behaviours constitute core features of ASD and markedly impede attempts to remediate the disorder. Little previous research has examined characteristics of the core features of ASD in infants. METHOD: In the present study, 760 infants with autism, PDD-NOS or no diagnosis of ASD but at risk for other developmental delays or physical disabilities were evaluated with respect to the nature and extent of their stereotyped and ri

Hydrotherapy for Rett syndrome.

OBJECTIVE: The effects of hydrotherapy on an 11-year-old girl with stage III Rett syndrome were investigated. METHODS: The Halliwick method was used to apply hydrotherapy in a swimming pool twice a week for 8 weeks. The girl's physical abilities were assessed 3 times: before and 5 minutes after a single hydrotherapy session and after 8 weeks of hydrotherapy. The tests included analysis of stereotypical movements, functional hand use, hand skills, gait and balance, hyperactive behaviour, communication and social interaction. RESULTS: Immediately after hydrotherapy, stereotypical movements dec

Recent advances in Tourette syndrome research.

Tourette syndrome (TS) is a developmentally regulated neurobehavioral disorder characterized by involuntary, stereotyped, repetitive movements. Recent anatomical and neuroimaging studies have provided evidence for abnormal basal ganglia and dopaminergic function in TS. Basic research on striatal inhibitory mechanisms and dopaminergic function complements the recent neuroimaging and anatomical data. Parallel studies of basal ganglia participation in the normal performance and learning of stereotyped repetitive behaviors or habits has provided additional insight. These lines of research have pro

Schedule-induced stereotypy.

The phenomena of the induction and entrainment of adjunctive behaviours was investigated in eight people with severe or profound mental retardation who exhibited stereotypic behaviours. The occurrence of collateral behaviours was investigated under extinction and massed reinforcer baselines and a variety of periodic or intermittent schedules of reinforcement for the performance of a simple experimental task. Seven of the eight subjects demonstrated evidence of schedule-induced stereotypic behaviour in the experimental conditions: five of the eight subjects also showed evidence of the entrainme

Clinical Reasoning: A 21-Year-Old Patient Presenting With Penile Hemidystumescence.

This case presents a 21-year-old male patient with recurrent episodes of lost consciousness that exhibited both features of seizure and syncope that were ultimately diagnosed as syncope secondary to autonomic seizures. Notably, review of systems revealed stereotyped erectile dysfunction, characterized by unilateral penile tumescence ("hemidystumescence") occurring peri-ictally. Neurologic workup revealed left temporal slowing on EEG, and antiseizure medication led to resolution of both the loss-of-consciousness events and the hemidystumescence. This case represents a novel manifestation of foc

Effect of dichloromethane fraction of Areca catechu nut on monoamines associated behaviors and tyramine pressor sensitivity in rodents.

The current study was aimed at investigating the effect of Areca catechu nut dichloromethane fraction (7 mg/kg) on monoamines (serotonin and dopamine) modulation (5-hydroxytryptophan-induced tremors and phenylethylamine-induced stereotypes) and its interaction with tyramine (cheese effect). The dichloromethane fraction caused pronounced increase in 5-HTP-induced tremors (50%) with negligible PEA-induced stereotypes (20%). Additionally, it did not produce a significant increase in the tyramine pressor effects. These results suggest that the dichloromethane fraction of A. catechu nut primarily e

The pathophysiology of tardive dyskinesia.

In rodent models of tardive dyskinesia, dopamine-agonist-induced stereotyped behaviors after neuroleptic administration are used to assess presumed striatal postsynaptic receptor hypersensitivity. Early studies provided evidence that neuroleptic pretreatment did alter dopaminergic receptor sensitivity and hence the threshold for amine-induced stereotyped behavior. Later studies showed a dose effect for several neuroleptics. However, no hypersensitivity was seen with thioridazine, which prevented or reversed haloperidol-induced hypersensitivity. Duration appeared to be a risk factor early in bu

[Variants of movement disorders within the psychopathologic structure of borderline neuropsychiatric diseases in young children].

On the basis of the examination covering 30 young children (aged 2 months to 3.5 years), three variants of motor psychogenic disorders were specified. Group I included elementary, stereotypic motor phenomena expressed as special poses, rocking, jack-knifing, finger sucking and other stereotypes of motor acts. Group II was characterized by more complicated motor and psychomotor disorders in the form of various manifestations of motor infantilism. Group III comprised children with neurotic motor monosymptomatic and ritual-behavioural obsessive actions. The above disorders are assessed from the e

Exploring Patients' Experiences of Living With Liver Cirrhosis-Related Ascites and Receiving Follow-Up Care in Nurse-Led Outpatient Clinics.

In Europe the incidence of patients living with liver cirrhosis is growing due to increasing alcohol consumption, increased life span and higher body mass index. Patients with decompensated liver cirrhosis are a vulnerable group of patients suffering from stigma, negative stereotyping and bodily limitations, needing close follow-up care through a holistic nursing care model. This study aimed to explore patients' experiences of living with cirrhosis-related ascites, and the follow-up care they receive in nurse-led outpatient clinics. A qualitative approach was employed using semi-structured ind…

The Aggressive Gender Backlash in Intimate Partner Relationships: A Theoretical Framework and Initial Measurement.

This study introduces and validates a novel instrument to measure aggressive gender backlash (AGB), a distinct and underexplored dimension of gender backlash (GB) within intimate partner relationships. Based on the General Aggression Model, a multidimensional scale was developed and tested using data from 513 Peruvian female microentrepreneurs. Results demonstrate solid evidence of reliability, discriminant validity, and predictive validity across five dimensions: hostility, the withdrawal of support, sabotage/coercion, gender stereotyping, and masculine victimization. The findings reveal that…
