Group B streptococcal sepsis in adults and infants. Contrasts and comparisons.

Group B streptococcal infection may result in significant morbidity and mortality in both infants and adults. The experience with group B streptococcal disease was analyzed at one medical center over a ten-year period from 1975 to 1984. Streptococcus agalactiae bacteremia was observed in 29 adults and 26 infants, with an attack rate of 0.2 cases per 1000 adult admissions and 3.2 cases per 1000 live births, respectively. The majority of adult infections apparently occurred as a result of nosocomial acquisition and was associated with a high mortality rate of 38%. Risk factors for group B strept…

Vaginal carriage rate of group B Streptococcus in pregnant women and its transmission to neonates.

BACKGROUND: Maternal vaginal colonisation with Group B Streptococcus (GBS, Streptococcus agalactiae) at the time of delivery can cause vertical transmission to the neonate. GBS is the leading cause of sepsis, meningitis and pneumonia in the infants. Asymptomatic colonisation of the vagina with GBS varies with the geographical location. METHODS: This was a cross-sectional study conducted in 2009 at Benazir Bhutto Hospital, Rawalpindi, Pakistan. Lower vaginal swabs were obtained from 200 pregnant women at the time of admission in the Gynaecology and Obstetrics Department for term, normal vagina…

A comprehensive profile of the tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) circular RNA and circRNA-miRNA network in the pathogenesis of meningoencephalitis of teleosts.

The pathogenesis of tilapia meningoencephalitis is still unclear, where the involvement of circRNA is considered for its active role as a "miRNA sponge". Therefore, we aimed to investigate the profile of circRNA in tilapia meningoencephalitis further by constructing the circRNA-miRNA network for in-depth mechanism exploration. Briefly, a nile tilapia model of meningitis was established by injecting Streptococcus agalactiae (1.0 × 107 cfu per mL) and we evaluated the infected tilapia brain for the expression profile of circRNAs, their potential functions and their correlation with genes involve…

CRISPR typing and phage content of colonizing Group B Streptococci from healthy Egyptian women.

BACKGROUND: Streptococcus agalactiae or Group B Streptococcus (GBS) causes serious infections in neonates with a particularly high burden of disease in Africa. Maternal vaginal colonization is the primary source of neonatal transmission. Molecular surveillance of the maternal GBS population is crucial for informing maternal vaccine development and monitoring of the global circulation of GBS clones. METHODS: The current study analyzes the structure and diversity of the clustered regularly interspaced palindromic repeat (CRISPR)-associated (Cas) system and phage content in colonizing GBS isolat…

Menaquinone analogs inhibit growth of bacterial pathogens.

Gram-positive bacteria cause serious human illnesses through combinations of cell surface and secreted virulence factors. We initiated studies with four of these organisms to develop novel topical antibacterial agents that interfere with growth and exotoxin production, focusing on menaquinone analogs. Menadione, 1,4-naphthoquinone, and coenzymes Q1 to Q3 but not menaquinone, phylloquinone, or coenzyme Q10 inhibited the growth and to a greater extent exotoxin production of Staphylococcus aureus, Bacillus anthracis, Streptococcus pyogenes, and Streptococcus agalactiae at concentrations of 10 to …

Group B streptococci exposed to rifampin or clindamycin (versus ampicillin or cefotaxime) stimulate reduced production of inflammatory mediators by murine macrophages.

Streptococcus agalactiae (group B Streptococcus, GBS) is an important cause of sepsis and meningitis in neonates, and excessive production of the inflammatory mediators tumor necrosis factor (TNF) and nitric oxide (NO) causes tissue injury during severe infections. We hypothesized that exposure of GBS to different antimicrobial agents would affect the magnitude of the macrophage inflammatory response to this organism. We stimulated RAW 264.7 murine macrophages with a type-Ia GBS isolate in the presence of ampicillin, cefotaxime, rifampin, clindamycin, or gentamicin, singly or in combination. W…
