[Language activation in ischemic stroke and brain tumor: a PET study].

Disturbance of neurologic function in disorders of the central nervous system is expressed as altered activation pattern in functional networks after specific tasks, and can be studied by functional imaging modalities, e.g. positron emission tomography (PET). Language, a complex brain function is based on the interplay of a distributed network in which partial functions are executed in various centers and tasks are hierarchically organized according to their complexity. The specialization of different centers and the lateralization of integrative functions into the dominant (usually left) hemi

Effects of repeated intravenous esketamine administration on affective biases.

OBJECTIVES: While neuropsychological effects of conventional antidepressants are well-documented, more research is needed for rapid-acting antidepressants. This study examines the effects of esketamine on emotion processing and cognitive functioning, both acutely and sub-chronically. METHODS: Eighteen treatment-resistant depression (TRD) patients received repeated intravenous esketamine infusions. Mood state was reported daily, and the Facial Expression Recognition Task was administered 1h before and 4h after each infusion. Other assessments included the Digit Symbol Substitution Task. RESUL

Effects of chronic social defeat stress on social behavior and cognitive flexibility for early and late adolescent.

This study investigated the risk to social behavior and cognitive flexibility induced by chronic social defeat stress (CSDS) during early and late adolescence (EA and LA). Utilizing the "resident-intruder" stress paradigm, adolescent male Sprague-Dawley rats were exposed to CSDS during either EA (postnatal days 29-38) or LA (postnatal days 39-48) to explore how social defeat at different stages of adolescence affects behavioral and cognitive symptoms commonly associated with psychiatric disorders. After stress exposure, the rats were assessed for anxiety-like behavior in the elevated plus maze

Attention enhances short-term monocular deprivation effect.

Patching one eye of an adult human for a few hours has been found to promote the dominance of the patched eye, which is called short-term monocular deprivation effect. Interestingly, recent work has reported that prolonged eye-specific attention can also cause a shift of ocular dominance toward the unattended eye though visual inputs during adaptation are balanced across the eyes. Considering that patching blocks all input information from one eye, attention is presumably deployed to the opposite eye. Therefore, the short-term monocular deprivation effect might be, in part, mediated by eye-spe

Timing is everything: Event-related transcranial direct current stimulation improves motor adaptation.

BACKGROUND: There is a current discord between the foundational theories underpinning motor learning and how we currently apply transcranial direct current stimulation (TDCS): the former is dependent on tight coupling of events while the latter is conducted with very low temporal resolution. OBJECTIVE: Here we aimed to investigate the temporal specificity of stimulation by applying TDCS in short epochs, and coincidentally with movement, during a motor adaptation task. METHODS: Participants simultaneously adapted a reaching movement to two opposing velocity-dependent force-fields (clockwise a

Effects of smooth pursuit and second-order stimuli on visual motion prediction.

The purpose of this study was to determine whether smooth pursuit eye movements affect visual motion prediction using a time-to-contact task where observers anticipate the exact instant that a partially occluded target would coincide with a stationary object. Moreover, we attempted to clarify the influence of second-order motion on visual motion prediction during smooth pursuit. One target object moved to another stationary object (6 deg apart) at constant velocity of 3, 4, and 5 deg/s, and then the two objects disappeared 500 ms after the onset of target motion. The observers estimated the mo

Paired cognitive flexibility task with symptom factors improves detection of sports-related concussion in high school and collegiate athletes.

Determining the sensitivity and specificity of short neurocognitive assessments to objectively detect concussion will help clinicians more confidently integrate such tools in clinical management decisions. This study quantified the sensitivity and specificity of a computerized cognitive flexibility task isolating shifts of visuospatial attention in combination with clinical symptoms acutely (< 72 h) following concussion. A total of 100 athletes (53 concussed; 47 non-injured control; 42% female) completed computerized neurocognitive testing and clinical symptom reports (Sport Concussion Assessm

Stuttering Thoughts: Negative Self-Referent Thinking Is Less Sensitive to Aversive Outcomes in People with Higher Levels of Depressive Symptoms.

Learning theories of depression have proposed that depressive cognitions, such as negative thoughts with reference to oneself, can develop through a reinforcement learning mechanism. This negative self-reference is considered to be positively reinforced by rewarding experiences such as genuine support from others after negative self-disclosure, and negatively reinforced by avoidance of potential aversive situations. The learning account additionally predicts that negative self-reference would be maintained by an inability to adjust one's behavior when negative self-reference no longer leads to

Chronic treatment with a tryptophan-rich protein hydrolysate improves emotional processing, mental energy levels and reaction time in middle-aged women.

Common pharmacological treatments of mood disorders aim to modulate serotonergic neurotransmission and enhance serotonin levels in the brain. Brain serotonin levels are dependent on the availability of its food-derived precursor essential amino acid tryptophan (Trp). We tested the hypothesis that delivery of Trp via food may serve as an alternative treatment, and examined the effects of a Trp-rich, bioavailable dietary supplement from egg protein hydrolysate on cognitive and emotional functions, mood state, and sleep quality. In a randomised, placebo-controlled, parallel trial, fifty-nine ment

Effect of specific gait modifications on medial knee loading, metabolic cost and perception of task difficulty.

BACKGROUND: The metabolic cost and cognitive demand of altering natural gait have not been well studied. The purpose of this investigation was to assess three modified patterns - toe out, ipsilateral trunk lean and a medial weight shift at the foot - on the basis of 1) medial knee joint load reduction, 2) metabolic cost of performance and 3) subject perception of task difficulty. METHODS: 12 healthy individuals underwent 3 dimensional motion analysis and metabolic testing to assess the gait mechanics and energy expenditure of natural gait and the three experimental gait patterns, performed to

Gestational treatment with methylazoxymethanol (MAM) that disrupts hippocampal-dependent memory does not alter behavioural response to cocaine.

Schizophrenia is associated with increased rates of substance abuse that are thought to be the result of changes in cortical and mesolimbic dopamine activity. Previous work has shown that gestational methylazoxymethanol acetate (MAM) treatment induces increased mesolimbic dopamine activity when given around the time of embryonic day 17 (ED17), suggesting that MAM treatment may model some aspects of schizophrenia. Given that increased dopaminergic activity facilitates aspects of drug self-administration and reinstatement of drug seeking, the current experiments sought to assess cocaine self-adm

Remote semantic memory in patients with Korsakoff's syndrome and herpes encephalitis.

Performance of patients with Korsakoff's syndrome and herpes encephalitis was compared on a retrograde amnesia (RA) test, asking subjects to recall and recognize the definitions of words that had come into the language at different time periods. Performance was also compared on a related test in which participants were asked to produce the words to definitions they were given in free recall and cued recall versions. It was hypothesized that, if the temporal gradient in remote memory results from a shift of information from episodic to semantic memory, then there should be a temporal gradient o

Growth trajectories and early-life attention and memory outcomes: parallel analyses of cohorts in Malawi and the United States.

BACKGROUND: Variations in early-life growth patterns may reflect differences in early postnatal exposures influencing child attention and memory. OBJECTIVES: We aimed to identify growth trajectories and explore their associations with attention and memory among infants and young children across time points. METHODS: Anthropometric data were collected from cohorts in Malawi (n = 600) and suburban California, United States (n = 101) at birth and at 6-9, 8-12, and 11-15 mo. Latent class trajectory modeling identified sex-specific growth pattern classes for weight and weight-for-age z-score in b

Presaccadic Attention Shifts Up- and Downwards: Evidence From the Pupil Light Response.

Vision is introspectively stable, yet every eye movement moves the image of the world on the retina. The dominant view states that attention must precede saccades to prepare the brain for the postsaccadic retinal input, which ensures a stable visual experience. A recent surge of studies investigated visual asymmetries around the visual field, including asymmetries in presaccadic attention. Such studies demonstrated benefits of presaccadic attention on task performance for horizontal and downward saccades, but strikingly no such benefit was observed for upward saccades. An absence of upward pre

Exploring sleepiness and stress among London bus drivers: An on-road observational study.

Bus driver sleepiness is commonplace but often goes unreported within the industry. Whilst past research has begun to shed a light on the prevalence, potential causes, and consequences of bus driver sleepiness, this is often done using self-report methods. This is the first study to investigate sleepiness amongst city bus drivers on-road using a live bus route with drivers' regular schedules. A total of 16 participants completed two drives of their regular bus route once during an early morning shift and once during a daytime shift whilst physiological and self-report measures of sleep and str

From research to practice: a qualitative study examining the integration of telehealth-based suicide prevention in HIV care in Tanzania.

Despite the life-saving potential of mental health interventions, their scalability and integration within healthcare systems present significant challenges, particularly in low-resource global settings. This study investigated scaling IDEAS for Hope, a telehealth counseling intervention designed to reduce suicide risk and improve HIV care engagement among people living with HIV in Kilimanjaro, Tanzania, and identified actionable implementation strategies for successful scale-up. We conducted 20 semi-structured interviews, between May and July of 2024, with purposively sampled stakeholders fro

Imaging biomarkers in functional neurological disorders.

Recent advances in neuroimaging have significantly reshaped our understanding of functional neurological disorder (FND), shifting the focus from structural damage to dysfunctional brain networks. Building on Charcot's early intuition of a 'functional lesion', this review traces the evolution of neuroimaging research in FND, from its historical roots to current developments. We synthesize findings from structural and functional imaging studies, highlighting alterations in brain regions involved in motor control, self-agency and emotion regulation. Task-based fMRI studies have shown atypical act
