The failure of amalgam retrofilling and presence of an associated cystic lesion makes surgical endodontic intervention inevitable. Amalgam retrofilling can also give rise to mucoperiosteal tattoo formation and allow incorporation of amalgam particles in the cystic lining. Active sensitization to paraphenylendiamine (PPD) and related compounds from temporary black henna tattoos has become an epidemic in the recent years. A 32-year-old white man had a 5-month history of a progressively worsening rash on the dorsal aspect of his left foot. He stated that he engaged in self-tattooing of the left foot prior to the onset of the rash. Further questioning revealed that he had mowed the lawn wearing only sandals on the same day that he had tattooed his foot. Eleven consecutive patients with cancers of the oropharynx (4), hypopharynx (4), and oral cavity (3) were endoscoped and "tumor mapped" with a modified tattoo solution before beginning non-surgical antineoplastic therapy. The tattooed outlines were clearly visible at 7 weeks (5 patients after induction chemotherapy); at 14 weeks (2 patients after induction chemotherapy and radiotherapy); and between 12 and 16 weeks (4 patients after radiotherapy). BACKGROUND: Semipermanent henna tattoos containing para-phenylenediamine (PPD) are a well-known cause of severe contact dermatitis, mainly in children. Another relevant exposure source to PPD are hair dyes, which are increasingly used by children and have also been reported to cause intense facial and scalp dermatitis. German patch test guidelines for children recommend that PPD should only be tested in patients who have had a henna tattoo, and then at a reduced concentration of PPD 0.5 % for 24 hours.

BACKGROUND: Reflectance confocal microscopy (RCM) has quickly transitioned from a research tool to an adjunct diagnostic bedside tool, providing the opportunity for noninvasive evaluation of skin lesions with histologic resolution. RCM is an optical imaging technique that uses near-infrared excitation wavelengths and safe low-power lasers. En-face images of different skin layers (up to the superficial dermis) are acquired in grayscale based on the reflective indices of tissue components. Two HIV infected patients with visceral leishmaniasis and unusual cutaneous lesions are described. The first patient developed linear brown macules containing Leishmania parasites on the fingers and palms of the hands.
